Nielsen Overnights from Mediaweek:
The first live American Idol results show opened the evening with a hefty 23.17 million viewers and an 8.4 rating/21 share among adults 18-49 at 8 p.m. Comparably, that clobbered CBS’ still potent Survivor: Micronesia (Viewers: #2, 12.55 million; A18-49: #2, 4.0/10) by whopping 10.62 million viewers and 110 percent in the demo. If you are not watching this Micronesia edition, you are missing a truly addictive edition of the veteran franchise. As for American Idol, three of the four people I personally picked were eliminated: Joanne Borgella, Amy Davis and Garrett Haley. The fourth was Colton Berry, who nasty Simon told straight out that he had no future as a singer. Nice guy, isn’t he?
Season 6, final results from the same night: 24.4 million viewers and a 9.0 rating/23 share among adults 18-49.

yes simon was nasty to colton
i got 3 out of 4 right… but i chose chikezei instead of colton but its only a matter of time for him i think
Right they are. VERY good Survivor this go-round.
As to Simon the Mean (and that riDONKulous haircut), how hard would it have been to say to Colton, “you certainly can work in theater and use that as your basis for building a career for yourself.” I think one of my dogs could have said that quite easily.
It’s still a powerhouse. Who said AI was jumping the shark? I don’t think so.
Yep, Simon should have said it nicer, like “get a job, don’t choose singing as a career, and I want you to prove me wrong” that would have been classier.
For those interested: Jennifer Hudson is in the new SATC trailer for about one second :)….I wonder how big her part is and is she singing the theme song?
Sally
From what I understand since I’m a SATC addict, is that Jennifer Hudson plays Carrie Bradshaw’s assistant. I would assume that would relate to a pretty decently sized role. The theme song has always been instrumental to SATC so unless it is changing for the movie I wouldn’t expect to her J-Hud singing the theme…but who knows. :)
Simon has been unusually acerbic with all the semi-finalists this year. Maybe TPTB told Simon that if he played nice guy with the abysmally non-talented in the general auditions, he could take out his notorious nastiness on the ones that had made it to the top 24. I have one question for Simon! “If Colton has no future in music, why the heck was he chosen (out of thousands)to come as far as the 24 semis in the first place.”
Oh but he could answer that easily, angelia. He’d just tell you that Colton wasn’t his pick!
A little off-topic, but not much: Can anybody tell which contestants really really r-e-a-l-l-y want the stardom; really want the gold ring? I’m betting Asia’ and Rami want it really really bad. I think Carly could care less. Really. Think about it, she’s already been there done that, so this is just a way for her to slip into the top 10, tour, maybe get another contract. Who knows maybe she ran into Randy and he said, why don’t you give it another try? And she said, OK, I’m still good with it. But if she doesn’t make the top 10, she’ll just keep on going on.
Just IMO.
I think allot of the contestnts want it this year but I really do not know what thier thinking . Carly may want to win and so do most contestants this year. I the odd one out, do have diferent ones that I like for diferent reasons. It makes it interesting .
The gold ring who wants it most The Suns,La Lakers, Boston Celtics all traded to upgraded thier teams and of course the Spurs. They have the talent , some big name players and of course winning actually means something not just being in the finales or being noticed. The prize baby..(nigel just try to take the trophy away from Kobe or Tim Duncan it will not be pretty)
If Amanda finds out she has to dress up again next week for the group sing, I think she will end her performance by begging to go home.

So USA Today’s Marco R. della Cava, as well as others, tried to stir up some controversy recently by pointing out that Idol contestants Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook and Michael Johns have had considerable professional experience. My take? This is a bunch of microwaved crap. Who cares? Everyone who has gotten to the finals has had experience! That’s just a fact, and it’s no surprise to the producers or the judges. On the other hand, having experience doesn’t guarantee you’ll win or even make it to the finals.
There’s only one qualification when you audition for Idol (and from the comical, often cruel vignettes in the opening shows we know it’s not singing talent): You have to be completely unsigned and unaccountable to any talent agency, artist management, or record label. That’s it.
If a contestant is lucky to be one of the 1% that make it through the first rounds and given the chance to go to Hollywood, then a thorough background check is performed. Idol producers want to avoid a revival of the negative “American Felon” press that blindsided them the second year. By Hollywood week, everything the gossip websites and the news outlets have “unearthed” is old news to Idol – and perhaps even leaked by Idol to get press.
Could we please keep this post on Topic? It’s about the AI ratings, and tangentially the S7 contestants.
If you have articles to post THAT ARE NOT RATINGS RELATED, please post them in the HEADLINES thread. Thank you.
