Nigel Lythgoe: Pia was Never a Frontrunner, Maybe the Judges Should Decide Who Goes Home

Lyndsey Parker of Reality Rocks had a very revealing conversation with Idol producer, Nigel Lythgoe on Friday, at the So You Think You Can Dance Vegas auditions.

Here’s how Nigel is spinning the Pia debacle. She wasn’t going to win anyway. And hey THIS GROUP IS SO TALENTED ANYBODY COULD GO HOME AT ANY TIME.

“I know the [voting] results, so I know she was never a frontrunner…The fact of the matter is, it appears that Pia didn’t connect with the audience the way we maybe think she did.”

“This is going to happen every week now, because the talent is so strong.”

Addressing fan feedback that maybe changed need to be made to the elimination process to keep the “wrong” person from going home, Nigel says Idol will never limit votes BUT “Maybe if we change the rules next season, maybe do the same thing we do on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’….so that America votes for the bottom three, and then the judges decide who goes home….I think that will be thought about.”

!!!!

Nigel cautioned that such a drastic change would need to be run by show creator Simon Fuller first. “It’s not my format, ” says Nigel.

So kids, would you like Idol to give judges the power to pick who goes home? I think it would take away the essential thing that makes Idol, Idol–that the fans decide who stays and who goes. The save is bad enough…don’t go further down that slippery slope producers!
