No Michael Jackson Tribute On the Idol Tour, Plus other Random Updates

Anoop Desai twittered late last night,

“so we tried to work in a short MJ tribute to the end of the show today during rehearsal but it didn’t work out logistically, unfortunately.”

That doesn’t surprise me at all, the show was already set in stone by the time Jackson passed last Thursday. The way the Idol show is devised, there’s very little room for improvisation. Even seemingly little changes are big changes that involve not only the Idols learning new material, but coordination with the tech and crew as well…

Also, no lazy 4th of July for the Top 10, they are running through the show twice today, according to Scott MacIntyre.

  • girlygirl:

I guess this tweet from Anoop could be classified as a “random update”. So here ya go…

#just claimed my bunk on the tour bus…a little tighter than i imagined it would be…#

I found a listing on a television website. It listed Rob Thomas, Katharine McPhee and Jordin. But, after checking the NBC website, it looks like there was a mixup….

Too bad so sad. MJ tribute wld have be nice and thoughtful. RIP MJ.

  • girlygirl:

On another Idol fan site, there’s a post claiming someone heard them rehearsing “You Found Me” (the Fray) yesterday. They didn’t say which Idol was rehearsing this, but I would guess Matt. Has this been reported here before?

  • clearone:

Bummer about no MJ tribute. I still think they could have ditched Don’t Stop Believin’ and sang some MJ….but then again I’m not the tour director.

‘No Michael Jackson Tribute On the Idol Tour”

    Thank God. Enough is enough.

    MJ,

I appreciate your saying that ‘little changes’ are really ‘big changes’ — but as someone who has worked in showbiz for many years, I personally see this as a form of nonchalance or even laziness on the part of the director, THE person in the production with the power to call all the shots, resulting in the loss of a special ‘poignant’ moment that would have meant a lot to so many people — not the least of whom include the Idols themselves who have specifically expressed MJJ as their own Idol.

And I certainly hope this isn’t the Lighting Designer crying foul because he would have to go in and reprogram his cues.

Production teams make last-minute changes all the time. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it can be done — and even with these Idols who, with the exception of Adam and maybe one or two others, have never been choreographed for a show like this before. Let’s not forget: many of them spent 3 months learning choreographed sequences in a very short span of time, and a lot more intricate choreography than would have been needed in this case. As a matter of fact, to ramp down the cheese factor so evident in the group numbers on the show, it would have been just fine in this situation if they all stood together and sang one simple MJJ tune, with some video of Michael behind (editing a video sequence as this, and with this short turnaround, is a piece of cake).

I mean, if the creative folk who put together Super Bowl Halftime shows, which are huge complicated numbers that must be installed and struck in less than a half-hour, can put those together and make last-minute changes, which is always the case, the Idol Tour director and production team can add in one little MJJ song a few days before for the end of the show. Not to mention, that number can be tweaked each successive performance til it’s where they want it — I don’t think any Portland or Tacoma or Vancouver fan is going to mind that it’s not A perfect, the important thing is that it’s included — even if it’s just a simple, short 2-minute thing prior to “Don’t Stop Believin’” or whatever the final number is.

Huge missed opportunity. Just my two cents.

If Twitter is reliable (some people allowed into dress rehearsal), here are some set lists in order:

Kris: Heartless, No Boundaries, Bright Lights, Ain’t No Sunshine, Hey Jude (others join in at the end) (he pulled out the electric and acoustic guitars and piano)

Adam: Whole Lotta Love, Starlight, Mad World, Slow Ride, Bowie Medley (Looks: All black with the jacket. Eyeliner and shadows. Took off jacket after 2 songs)

Danny: PYT, Maria Maria, What Hurts the Most, My Wish

Allison: So What, Cry Baby, Barracuda

After Matt sang, finalists 10-5 sang a medley.

Matt: Hard to Handle, Georgia on My Mind, You Found Me

Anoop closed with My Prerogative (potentially singing Suspicious Minds)

  • LisaE:

    I’ll just add:

Kris is wearing jeans and a light blue t-shirt

Adam is wearing a black t-shirt underneath his jacket and is apparently going to bust some sexy dance moves during his Bowie medley. He enters from behind the set scenery.

  • Grammie Kari:

I would love to hear Anoop singing Suspicious Minds!

  • LisaE:

Sorry, got the Anoop one wrong. Here’s the full set list – PLEASE DELETE if I’m not supposed to post it here!

Megan – Put Your Records On (Corrine Bailey Rae), Tears Dry On Their Own (Amy Winehouse)

Scott – Bend and Break (Keane), A Thousand Miles (Vanessa Carlton)

Lil – Be Without You (Mary J. Blige), ?, Single Ladies (Beyonce)

Anoop – Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson), Mad (Ne-Yo), My Prerogative (Bobby Brown)

Matt – Hard To Handle, Georgia On My Mind (Ray Charles), You Found Me (The Fray)

    Beggin’ Group Song (Top 5-10)

Allison – So What (Pink), Cry Baby (Janis), Barracuda (Heart)

Danny – PYT (Michael Jackson), Maria Maria (Santana), What Hurts The Most, My Wish (Rascal Flatts)

Adam – Whole Lotta Love (Led Zepplin), Starlight (Muse), Mad World (Gary Jules), Slow Ride (w/Allison), David Bowie Medley

Kris – Heartless, No Boundaries, Ain’t No Sunshine, Bright Lights, Hey Jude (all the Idols came in at the end)

    Don’t Stop Believing (Whole group)

  • Anastasia72071:

  • No MJ is fine by me.
There are a million tributes running on TV 24/7 if you are so inclined.

    I agree.

    LisaE:
If Kris play acoustic guitar on Heartless, sing with band on NB, play piano on ANS, then what instrument he will play on Hey Jude and Bright Lights?
I hope piano on Hey Jude and electric guitar on Bright Lights. (That song has an awesome guitar solo!)
Also Kris said in his iTune Pass video that the ANS version will be totally different with what he did on the show. Any leak on that?

  • desiiiire:

A Thousand Miles by Scott…he will ruin that song…
    Closer…Michael will also ruin it…
