One Hour So You Think You Can Dance Special Will Profile The Top 20
Nigel Lythgoe has followed through with his idea for a So You Think You Can Dance “Meet The Top 20″ special!
The One hour special will air on Monday, October 26 at 8/7c pm, the night before the the Top 20 begin their weekly performances, and will serve to introduce viewers to the SYTYCD Season 6 Top 20.
I think this idea of Nigel’s is great. I wish Idol would do something similar. Of course, the producers will highlight the dancers they’d like to advance. But, at least we will get a look at everybody before the competition begins.
In other SYTYCD news: They Season 5 kids were at the final Idols concert in New Hampshire Tuesday night. They’re already in town rehearsing for the opening show of their nationwide tour on Saturday, September 20.
I’ve got my ticket, and will be tweeting from the concert, so watch for that…

This is a fantastic idea and I couldn’t agree more that it’s something Idol should employ. God, I miss Nigel sometimes. Ken’s boneheaded move to revert to a top-36 semifinal/wildcard format resulted in a mostly-lackluster top 10 that I felt little to no connection with until the very end of the season. The fact that the top 4 suddenly got exciting was a stroke of sheer dumb luck for TPTB and became the only saving grace of S8. I didn’t follow the tour closely this year but it seems clear from web chatter that a number of the lower-placing Idols really impressed and started picking-up fans through the summer. Imagine what could have been if we had been given more chance to get to know them (as performers and personalities) during the actual Idol season?
A special featuring all of the Idol semifinalists is an interesting idea. But barring that, it would just be nice if they would make more of an effort to treat all of them equally in terms of airtime and backstories before the live shows start. At least if they go back to the Top 24 format it will level the playing field a bit, compared to the horrendous Top 36 pimp-fest.
This is a great idea, I can’t wait to watch the special and it will be interesting to get a some background on all the dancers before they start the competition.
Great idea! And why wouldn’t the Idol producers want to snatch up another night (a Monday couldn’t hurt, right?) on the schedule with the Idol juggernaut?
All I can say is FINALLY. This means audition/Vegas pimping won’t have the same impact (thankfully). Wouldn’t it be nice if Idol did this, too? Oh, wait, Nigel left…
I like this idea, it will be a nice way to remind viewers who everyone is before the show starts too, although I still think there will be some serious pimping in this episode. Also, if anyone thinks there will ever be equal air time for the top 20 get real, this is a tv show first and foremost. Some people are just more interesting than others, or have a more dramatic story arc.
Nigel is all about promoting dance, choreographers and dancers. I love the attitude of this show. The two decisions announced today are great illustrations of their priorities. Alan Shankman was not picked for his ability to draw in viewers, but because his style, values and his ability to give dancers the feedback that will help them excel are totally in alighment with the show. (I loved it on the top 15 dances show where he is enthusing “that was sick!”) I like the idea of showcasing the dancers as people in a way that their dance selections might not provide during the first weeks when viewers are trying to figure out who is their “favorite dancer.”
this show needs to get some type of recognition SOON. an emmy win for the show or for Cat, or hopefully great ratings during the fall…something to show for its great quality production. much like amazing race, I feel its one of the few reality programs that really comes out on top. just talent, not much forced drama…the way it should be.
Well last week’s audition episode felt like it was all about Ryan. Hardly fair for any Top 20 contestant coming out of the LA auditions. So maybe this will help level things a bit – maybe not as much as we’d like. But it is a step in the right direction.
This is a terrific idea! We all hate when a contestant shows up in the TOP 20 and we know almost nothing about them. At least SYTYCD makes an effort to please the fans.
American Idol has a lot to learn.
This week’s SYTYCD audition episode was much better than last week. I am already picking out some TOP 20 possibilities
