Paula Abdul: Not Happy with her Nightline Story
After Paula Abdul’s Nightline interview premiered Thursday night, she twittered this the next morning:
PaulaAbdul: Disappointed that Cynthia tried SO HARD on Nightline to make it look like I’m on drugs & alcohol. U know it’s not true. THX 4 yr support!
Wow. Really?
The reporter, Cynthia McFadden asked the hard questions that are on people’s minds, like she’s supposed to do. But in the end, the piece was fair, and in my opinion, very sympathetic to Paula and her health woes, which she claims causes some of her strange behavior.
Watch the interview and and decide for yourself: HERE.

I really don’t know what to think of Paula.
On the one hand, I see someone who appears to genuinely care about the contestants and understand what it’s like to be on the receiving end of someone who can completely make or break your dreams. She can be critical, but she has a knack for tempering her comments with constructive criticism (and a dab of positive feedback thrown in) as opposed to Simon’s all-out annihilation. I don’t doubt a lot of thought goes into what she’s going to say, given her use of analogies and inspired quotes. To be honest, she has more of value to say than Randy does with his nauseating “Yo Dog!” and “You can sing the phone book’ mantras. What the hell do you take away from that? Better yet, she pays attention to and shows respect to the contestants by getting involved in their performances. This in stark contrast to Simon who turns his chair away and talks throughout most of the competition.
On the other hand, I also view Paula as extremely narcissistic, needy, vain, whiney and demanding. You see it in clips on AI when her hair stylist has to touch her up between auditions and performances, you hear it in the rumors of behind the scenes turmoil during contract negotiations and you see it more than ever if you’ve tuned into her reality TV show. Oy! It was the TV show in particular that re-confirmed all of my suspicions about her. If she wants to re-claim any ounce of self dignity she may still have, that needs to be taken off the air pronto!!
Bottom line: Nice girl (by all accounts of past and present contestants) with a crapload of issues. She’d be well advised to go along with the drug rumors because I’d hate for people to think she’s really that bad without some sort of aid!
I found the interview well done and not overly tough at all. I find it hard to have a lot of sympathy for Paula because she brought most of the rumors on herself by her actions. I didn’t watch her reality show but the parts I did showed someone who has issues. I don’t know or care if she’s drinking or taking meds or whatever. I just can’t listen to her comments on the singers half of the time because she can’t say a clear sentence or learn to stop while you’re ahead. I will say that she seems better this season except for when it shows that she prepares comments ahead of time. I doubt even the kids get pumped up by her judging when she’s the only one saying something good or when all she can come up with is you look nice or your dress is pretty. It might be a respite from bad comments but not all that helpful.
I think after hearing the physician’s statement, it is clear now that muscle relaxants are what is causing the slurred speech and loopy behaviour, not alchohol. She is dealing with ongoing chronic physical pain as best as she can. I give her credit for trying to live a full and interesting life in spite of such chronic and intense pain. Many people cave and retreat from life under those circumstances. She must be a very strong person to carry on with the frenetic schedule and pace of that show, along with her other obligations and demands on time that goes with the show. I know she is well compensated, but it can’t be easy for her. The reason I like Paula is because I honestly sense that she cares for the contestants well being and doesn’t just see dollar signs. Simon, although I like him, and agree most of the time with his critiques, I feel he merely sees the monetary value in the both the show and the contestants. I think he could care less about those kids other than the money it makes him. I hope Paula stays on. The show will not be the same without her and will definitely lose its heart if she chooses to leave. I think Randy and Kara are much more easily replaceable than either Simon or Paula.
I hope Paula stays on Idol, and I really do have a soft spot in my heart for her. But she needs to stop giving people ammunition for their “she’s crazy, she’s on something” jokes. She started out strong this season, and then quickly fell into the old schtick with Simon and the unintelligible comments. A little of this is fun,but she needs to stop whining about it and step up her game if she expects to change the “loopy Pauler” image she has contributed to creating. A lot of people are rooting for her.
I just wonder if she prepares her notes or someone does that for her? There are times when I really like Paula – other times she is so annoying. I hope she finds happiness in her life.
