Paula Abdul Welcome To Guest Judge So You Think You Can Dance
If Paula Abdul’s contract negotiations don’t work out with American Idol, Nigel Lythgoe would be happy to hire her!
“We would certainly consider [Abdul as] a guest judge,” said Nigel told the Daily News Tuesday, “Without question.”
Here’s what Nigel thinks is going on behind closed doors right now:
“I’d never been involved in negotiations when I was with the show, but having spoken with [Fox president of alternative programming] Mike Darnell, I know Fox wants to keep Paula,” said Lythgoe. “The figures that have been quoted for Simon [Cowell] and Ryan [Seacrest] are great figures. I don’t know if they’re true, but Paula seeing those figures would make her pretty upset.”
“They will talk and try to iron things out, and if they don’t come to an agreement, then Paula will move on.”
And here’s the million dollar quote:
“At the end of the day, that program is bigger than any individual. Even Simon.”
I so agree.
I don’t have a problem believing Nigel would invite Paula to be a guest judge on SYTYCD. He’s been badgering her on twitter to choreograph a piece for the show, so why not guest judge a couple of shows? It would be interesting to hear her critiques on dance. She might actually be more astute and critical, judging a discipline she supposedly is a real expert on.
In So You Think You Can Dance news, the show celebrates its 100th episode on Thursday with a star-studded (well, one semi-star by marriage) extravaganza featuring a Tyce DiOrio Judy Garland tribute performed by Katie Holmes.
Plus, past contestants will return to perform Emmy-winning performances: Wade Robson will perform his own ‘Ramalama (Bang Bang)” routine. Jaimie Goodwin and Hok Konishi perform Robson’s ‘The Hummingbird and the Flower” and Travis Wall and Heidi Groskreutz-Burns perform Mia Michaels’ ‘The Bench’ .

I think Paula would be a great judge for SYTYCD. A better fit for here than Idol.
And that would be a happy way for Idol to have 3 judges but also add someone who is younger and in touch with current music.
BINGO!!!
Oh, no!! Does that mean we get stuck with Kara?
I wondered why Paula has never guest judged before. It’s funny that Nigel didn’t mention choreographing a piece for the show.
If anyone is interested there is a pre-sale for tickets to the tour starting this Friday. I have used this website in the past and got excellent seats.
edit: I’m going to be posting my own links in a day or two.
Here’s “rare footage” of Paula dancing with a 10-year-old Wade Robson (starting at 1:35):

AND SO DO I!
Nigel, telling it like it is.
Didn’t Simon say something about not seeing Idol last beyond 10 seasons or so? I guess Paula is thinking now’s the time to grab as much as possible before the cash cow goes away. Simon will produce the new show, and Ryan’s contract ensures that he’ll be back to host the next thing if that happens in the next three years, but Paula’s name is tied only to AI. She has arguably more leverage now for AI, but there’s no need for her if they ever revamp for a future/different show. Guest judging for SYTYCD makes sense for her, but that’s much more low profile/paying than being one of 4 main personalities on the biggest show in America.
She’d definitely be a better guest judge than Ellen! I’m still trying to wrap my brain around that choice. Love Ellen but when did she become trained in dance? Bopping up and down her studio every day doesn’t qualify her, imo. One of the things I’ve always liked about SYTYCD is the credibility their judges have and I’d hate to see them lose that. Paula is eminently qualified to be on that panel!
I think Idol would do well with Simon and rotating judges on Idol, like on SYTYCD. And Paula *does* know a great deal about dancing, so I think she would be a good fit for SYTYCD. I don’t know who would play the Mary role; then again, I do not LIKE Mary to play the Mary role. I wish we could have Nigel and two other judges (NappyTab, WADE, Tyce, WADE, Mia, WADE, Sonya, Brian Friedman, WADE, etc.).
That said, I would like to keep Randy, Paula, and Simon (AND NOT KARA) as judges for Idol this year and then review the format (or end the show). Okay, I wouldn’t like to keep them this year, but I think it’s too late now, and GOD FORBID we have Randy Dawg, NB Kara, and Simon.
Paula and Mary judging together? That could make for good TV.
No, leome, NOOOO.
‘SCREEEECH! HOT TAMALE TRAIIIIN!!! WOO OOO! What did YOU think, Paula?’
‘That’s the best I’ve ever seen you dance. EVER EVER EVER!’
*thud*
There have been loads of rumors that Paula and Nigel don’t get along at all. There was even some bizarre story about Nigel spitting on Paula during season 2.
So far, no choreographed tribute to MJ. And the whole twitter conversation was rather coded. Paula saying “have your people call my people” is code for blowing someone off. And Nigel’s response that he didn’t have any people is his code for saying he’s not “Hollywood” and she is. One of the reasons I have far less respect for Nigel than Simon Cowell is because Simon says it to your face. I think Nigel is just as snarky and maybe even worse, but he says it behind your back.
So, I think Nigel’s invite for Paula to guest judge is all talk. He knows she won’t come near him. But it would be a perfect out of FOX, still enjoy the Paula rating factor, move her to area she actually might do well in, and free AI up from all the negatives she brings.
By the way, anyone notice Simon has dropped his, “if Paula leaves, then I leave,” declaration. Now he’s talking about how he really doesn’t control these things. Uh-oh.
I’d be up for Paula judging SYTYCD more so than AI myself.
Also, I’m pretty sure Mary didn’t become a fixture judge until S3. I liked it better when they rotated the other 2-3 judges (Nigel always judging – S1 had 4 judges). Mary was much more bearable those first 2 seasons. There are plenty of other ballroom experts who aren’t as annoying.
Oh, but Paula DID judge auditions the first season. I believe it was for just one week. She was the first person on the left. I would need to go over my recorded sessions for the season. She did a good job.
So, they can’t stand each other? That shouldn’t stop her from being a guest judge or choreograph a dance. It’s all about ratings and maybe Idol fans tuning in.
This is the show Paula should have been judging on in the first place. She knows dance obviously and would probably be very helpful and supportive on this type of show.
Again, I’m sure Paula will be back but it’s cool that she could have this opportunity should she choose not to come back.
Paula wasn’t ever on. It was always Nigel, Bonnie, and Jeff during the auditions. Carrie Ann Inaba did the choreography round.

I remember looking forward to her being on the show.
any more spoilers???? joshua and katee’s bollywood? mark and chelsea’s bleeding love? pretty please
and if Danny isnt performing, im throwing my drink of choice at the tv
love paula…as crazy and kooky as she is……i do hope that eventually she does make an appearance on SYTYCD…could bring in extra ratings from the Idol crowd that normally doesnt watch this show (and whats all this talk of paula being incoherent….one word for yall…RANDY)
I don’t watch the show. But, isn’t ‘guest judge’ just a one time appearance?
And, he said ‘consider’ which sounds a lot like ‘get in line’.
Tomorrow night:
The third one is that Tyce dance that I did not like.
I bet Nigel would have on Paula more than once if Idol is stupid and lets Paula go. I can see her on SYTYCD, and it would give her a chance to focus on her dancing again, which we saw on Idol. Her singing sucked, but I liked her dancing.
How funny if they moved Mary over to Idol?
She and Simon could battle it out.
Go Paula!
Paula will be back.
