Ratings News: Week 3

This week’s Nielsen Overnights:

On Tuesday, American Idol scored 28.1 million viewers with a 11.0 rating and a 27 share in adults 18-49.  On Wednesday, Idol scored  25.3 million viewers with a 9.9 rating and a 26 share in adults 18-49.

Interesting tidbit:

The beatdown that FOX continues to put on all other broadcast networks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays these days is impressive.  FOX is almost averaging more viewers than all of the other broadcast networks combined.

Jordan singing if it is pre-recorded will probably do just fine unless she has a Speard moment like on SNL. People will remeber the game if Patriots have a Perfect season will remembered in years to come .Ok I will not who sang.
I saw Leona new video and i can tell why Simon liked her because the girl has a smooth , good voice , has sort of a classy look and has maturity . I think she maybe will become an international star .

The beatdown that FOX continues to put on all other broadcast networks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays these days is impressive.

Impressive in that they are dominating, not impressive in that they are mainly going against re-runs.

Impressive in the way that one country dominates the Olympics when half the world decides to boycott.

What’s not impressive is how they aren’t doing better. How come last year, with real competition, they had much better ratings? So, this is like winning an Olympic gold in the 100 m sprint by running it in 20 seconds when last year you did it in 10. Sure, you beat everybody, but you aren’t as good as you used to be.

    Here are some numbers:

    Ep..S 7….S 6….Drop 7-6..S 5…Drop 7-5
    1…33.4M..37.4M….11%…..36M……7%
    2…30.4M..36.9M….18%…..32M……5%
    3…29.3M..32.6M….10%…..35M…..16%
    4…27.1M..33.9M….20%…..32.4M…16%
    5…28.1M..33.7M….16%…..30.1M….7%
    6…25.3M..31.9M….21%…..30.4M…17%

Those are some pretty impressive drops between Season 6 ratings and Season 7 (although the last two are overnights). Also, the last 4 Idol shows are the first Idol audition rounds to go below 30M viewers in the 3 seasons (I don’t have stats for previous seasons).

I expect that the other networks are planning some serious counter-programming for next year.

Kristen- I wonder if “Nashville Star” moving to NBC is an indicator or if “Gone Country ” will also move to the networks and provide some competition? That would be nice to see what happens in the future. I know some at work more more advid watchers but a few ae not interested yet because they state contestants are the same or like ones from years past. I think maybe it is allot of factors or just simply it been around awhile .

I hear this being complained about or used all the time . Three facts it is more than singing people out thier probably can sing better then most pop stars out thier, the argument is mute and they sing other peoples songs w/out thier own .(overblowm karokie)The finale one “pop’ music what is in now may not be as in the future .(some just fit) The media know this so do the producers but it is a “reality” show they probably will skew things to create the respnce they want because hey it works for the wwf.

I also feel the need to point out (although at this point it’s like banging my head against a wall) that the overnight numbers reported in the press do not include DVR viewing. DVRs have only been measured for a couple of years, so this decline is a combination of a slight real decline and a shift in the way people are viewing television.

I do believe the numbers are showing a real decline (and for good reason) just not as large as everyone has been led to believe. It’s possible that other networks will counter program, but even with a major slip, AI is still incredibly dominant. No show on television has ever seen ratings increase for five years straight, until AI. The numbers you’re seeing could be chopped in half and AI would still be a very profitable show.

I plan to do an extensive comparison once the auditions are over.

I think Idol has peaked. It happens.

It’s rumored that the writers strike will end soon. It’ll be interesting to see what happens once the shows are back.

Also, the shows after Idol, House (22.5 million, 8.6 rating/20 share in adults 18-49) and Moment of Truth (7.8/19 in 18-49,17.9 million viewers overall), are huge, and are contributing to FOX’s success on Tuesday and Wednesday.

    It’s not all about Idol.

I think it will be interesting to see what the ratings for idol look like once the auditions are over. I will be interested to see what the ratings look like the morning after the first set of the guy nights and girl nights and if the strike does indeed end soon, then that will be one of the “real” tests IMO.

I also feel the need to point out (although at this point it’s like banging my head against a wall) that the overnight numbers reported in the press do not include DVR viewing

I believe that the ratings on MJs charts indicate the final Nielsen numbers with the delayed DVR viewing factored in. That’s why I noted that the last two numbers for this season are overnights (the final numbers won’t be available for a bit).

Even the delayed watching is a downturn. AI used to be a water cooler show that people watched live so that they could discuss it the next day and/or vote. If you are watching it two days later, you probably aren’t voting (though you can get the numbers from websites). People who watch live tend to watch more commercials.

There is definitley very little water cooler chat this year. I used to hear the chatter all the time which made me start watching about midway through season 3. Cooler chat was at an all time high in season 5 but my city had a horse in the race so that may have contributed. Last year all people did was complain about Sanjaya, Haley and Antonella. A lot of people I work with dont even know who won.

Well, Simon has claimed he’s done after his contract is up… which I believe is after two more season, so after Season 8? If true, that might be a day of reckoning for AI.
