Robert Cavallo (Green Day, My Chemical Romance) - Producing David Cook’s Upcoming Album

We now know who is producing David Cook’s upcoming album. According to this interview with Toronto’s CHUM FM it’s Robert Cavallo who co-produced the Grammy-winning album American Idiot for Green Day and the hugely popular Welcome to the Black Parade for My Chemical Romance. Both discs have gotten extensive play in both Rock and Pop radio formats. Cavallo has also produced records for Goo Goo Dolls, Chris Isaak, Alanis Morissette, and Jewel.

Cavallo more or less discovered Green Day, signing them to Reprise after listening to their demo tape in his car. I’d say Cook is in pretty good hands.

David says they started tracking the record “a week and a half - 2 weeks ago.” He’s written songs with Raine Maida of Our Lady Peace, Ed Roland of Collective Soul, John Fields and Kara DioGuardi.

The album is set to drop mid-November.

Another interesting tidbit from the interview: David’s first concert after the Idol tour will be a one-off show in the Philippines January 27th. The US tour begins shortly thereafter.

ETA: More from Billboard Magazine About the album tracks, David says, “I think we’ve for sure got seven songs we’re tracking…We’re gonna try to get to around 20 I think, and work it out from there.”  About his collaborators, David says, “I really just try to get into these creative processes with some different minds and see what happens, and so far the results have been great…I don’t really feel like I’ve had a fruitless writing session yet.”

Here’s a link to a live performance of “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, a song which, along with “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” was very popular, even in my American high school in Japan.

prime, thanks for the link. It brought back (not exactly very fond) memories. “Wake Me Up When September Ends” was my and my batchmates’ theme song when we were taking the Bar exams, which are annually conducted in my country on the four Sundays of September. Heh. :tongue1_tb:

    In case anyone is wondering…

Of all the countries on earth, why the Philippines?

Since the Chum FM podcast came out yesterday (last night Manila time), there have been various reactions across messageboards and forums, ranging from incredulity to surprise to jubilation. One common thought: Of all the countries in the world, why has David Cook been booked to play music in the Philippines? Well, why not?

  2. 52 jpfan Jul 26th, 2008 at 4:18 am

This is great news for Cook. He might put out a good album after all which would be pretty amazing for rushed AI jobs. At the very least, no more TOML. I’m almost looking forward to it now. The Philippines things is a bit odd but I guess he’s a superstar there, so why not.

jpfan, Elliott’s first international gig was also in the Philippines. ;)

I am thrilled to hear about the producer being Rob Cavallo. He does not work with just anybody and has a marvellous record of producing wonderful records. This is going to be such an excitin album to look forward to.

his concert should be held in araneta coliseum, not in a mall like elliott did. i guess. he is that famous here right now. actually, when i was in the mall last week, i heard little sparrow playing in one of the stores. i never thought little sparrow would be heard here. i think it’s the effect of always be my baby mania..

  6. 56 primeminister Jul 26th, 2008 at 8:21 am

I know I’m really late to the game, but I just read mjs post (from quite a while back) about David doing some writing with JASON WADE from LIFEHOUSE? If any of Cookie’s songs turn out like “You and Me” “Hanging By a Moment” “Whatever It Takes” or “Storm“……

    OMG! *faints*

  7. 57 Jolene Jul 26th, 2008 at 8:31 am

I wonder when they’ll release location and ticket info. Since the news is out, they are probably getting alot of questions about it (Hmm… come to think about it, I don’t know who “they” are).
Elliot performed in a mall? Why would he come all the way to the Philippines to perform in a mall?

If David wasn’t such a big deal over there, I wouldn’t understand him doing a concert, let alone opening his solo tour there, but he is.
Honestly I think if Idol was big in my country, we’d have the same phenomenon here. DC was by far the most popular contestant during the show here, it’s just that there aren’t enough AI viewers for it to really make a difference.

And I do wonder what things would’ve looked like had ABMB been allowed to chart and get radio play in the US. I wish they could’ve released that instead of TOML.

Or release it as a digital “B-side” if there’s such a thing?

  9. 59 RemusL Jul 26th, 2008 at 9:07 am

Jolene, I think Elliott was invited by some local business interests to come to the Philippines.

I was also initially disappointed to learn that Elliott’s shows would be by way of mall tours. I certainly would have paid for tickets to see him in (an) exclusive venue(s). However, the free shows didn’t turn out so bad, after all. Elliott still sounded amazing and the free mall shows certainly gave the fans lots of opportunities to meet and interact with the guy.

Elliot performed in a mall? Why would he come all the way to the Philippines to perform in a mall?

Maybe because he was paid good money to do so? ;) That mall corporation (Ayala) certainly can afford to bring in these international artists and have them play for free, purportedly as a way to thank its patrons and, I guess, as a promotional tool. Other artists recently brought in to play at these malls include Taylor Hicks and Colbie Caillat.

BTW, Even Daughtry is being brought here by another mall corporation (Eastwood), albeit his show isn’t going to be for free. (The show is this Tuesday and I understand that only about 70% of the tickets have been sold to date.) I actually have a feeling that it is this same mall group that would also be bringing Cookie over…

  11. 61 Lu Jul 26th, 2008 at 9:10 am

Thanks for that info Purps. Wish we had a mall group like that here in VA! :) I think this news about DC’s cd is very exciting. I can’t wait for his music. Love, love, love the voice and the guy behind it!

So this is something like the Wall-Mart event, Where a large corporation pays the artists to perform for free? That’s different than what I was imagining.
I certainly hope David is booked to an arena, and that tickets aren’t free of charge. Not taking anything away from Elliot, but I can’t see David opening his solo tour doing mall shows in the Philippines. If that was the case, I’d find it weird and worrisome.

  13. 63 Trina Jul 26th, 2008 at 9:41 am

Huh I don’t understand this angsting. Am I missing something? I listened to the interview and he didn’t say this is how he’s kicking off his solo tour. It sounded like this is a one off solo show that was booked on it own and the solo tour would come a little later on. Considering how popular he is there right now I would imagine there’s a huge demand for him and he was probably offered a good sum of money.

And I do wonder what things would’ve looked like had ABMB been allowed to chart and get radio play in the US. I wish they could’ve released that instead of TOML.

I’m not so sure it would have been wise to release a cover song right off the bat no matter how good it may be given the karaoke label that’s often connected to AI. US radio is completely different than other countries. Some radio stations may not even play a cover song. For all the complaints TOML gets it’s done amazingly well and he has himself a radio hit.

  14. 64 Jolene Jul 26th, 2008 at 9:51 am

Huh I don’t understand this angsting.

You’re right, There really is nothing to angst about, I guess I’m just curious to find out more about how this show came to be.
Also, I love Elliot, so if anyone took offence in what I said earlier - sorry about that.

I couldn’t agree more! DC could really pull off Jason Wade type songs! Okay, I’m going to check out “Storm”.

Also, thanks for the “Wake Me Up When September Ends” link, I loved it!

You’re most welcome, cookcricket. I’m not sure if you’ll like “Storm,” as it’s not really considered one of Lifehouse’s big hits (like the other songs mentioned above). The video of their live performance is just a personal favorite of mine, that’s all. :)

This is all to say….I can’t wait for DC’s album–and the post-grunge type songs that may (or may not) be on it!

  17. 67 purplesmile Jul 26th, 2008 at 10:38 am

Thanks for that info Purps. Wish we had a mall group like that here in VA! :)

LOL, Lu. (The Ayalas are some of the richest of the rich here in my country. I think they negotiated with Elliott’s team very early on so they were able to book him. You may have noticed they were even thanked by Elliott in the liner notes of his CD. ;) They tried but did not succeed in booking Daughtry - it’s a band, after all, though, who I understand had already become a little too expensive when they tried to negotiate with the team.)

So this is something like the Wall-Mart event, Where a large corporation pays the artists to perform for free? That’s different than what I was imagining.

I don’t know how the Wal-Mart affair works, but maybe it is a bit similar. In a way, these mall shows are exclusive, too, because most of the seat passes are given out to the corporate partners and sponsors, as well as to the big, loyal mall patrons (those with exclusive privilege cards) and a limited number are given out to the general public who either have to meet purchase requirements or line up for the limited tickets. However, since the concerts themselves are held in the activity centers of the malls, even those without passes can watch the shows. Just to give you an idea of what it is like, you may check out this video I took of Elliott’s last performance here. :)

Elliott Yamin at the ATC - A Song For You (please excuse the screaming fangirls, heh)

I certainly hope David is booked to an arena, and that tickets aren’t free of charge. Not taking anything away from Elliot, but I can’t see David opening his solo tour doing mall shows in the Philippines. If that was the case, I’d find it weird and worrisome.

I don’t think Cookie’s gig would be the same as Elliott’s. As I said, I’m thinking it would be more like Daughtry’s, if at all. (Trivia: the only other artist brought over here by the Daughtry promoters happens to be the “immaculate” Mandy Moore. Heh.)

At any rate, I also don’t think this Philippine gig is really going to “open” his actual solo tour…perhaps it will just be a gig (which may or may not be preceded by isolated US gigs after the album release) that happened to have been booked on the date it was because that was what Cookie’s schedule so far allowed. Oh, well…whatever kind of gig this is, I doubt it will really tarnish Cookie’s rep/cred any. If at all, it would probably help line his pocket while affording him an opportunity to give some back to his devoted Pinoy fans (of which there are many). Also, he (and his worried US fans) certainly can expect that Cookie will be given the royal treatment here, which can’t hurt much.

actually, when i was in the mall last week, i heard little sparrow playing in one of the stores. i never thought little sparrow would be heard here.

When I was at Gloria Jean’s last week, I heard Dream Big and went “whoopee!” (Hey, I happen to like that song…so sue me! lol)

  21. 71 chachi Jul 26th, 2008 at 11:52 am

    OMG, AMAZING.

Having wiki’ed this guy, can I say that I am now freakishly excited about this. I could care less about MCR (though Welcome to the Black Parade IS a good song), but American Idiot is in one of my top five albums of all time. The whole album is amazing. This producer seems to really know how to make a whole album sound like a whole album, which I love. Which DC will also love, based on what he’s said in interviews. The Goo Goo Dolls Gutterflower is another album that is actually really good as a whole.

In our “digital download” culture, it seems like whole albums aren’t given the care the used to be, but that sense of cohesion seems to be what really separates the good from the great. Not that I’m ready to say the album is going to be great, because that just sets me up to look like an asshole, but this producer is definitely a step in the right direction. Hopefully, the source material is there. I agree with cheese. We need a sample, and we’ll help him figure out if he’s going in the right direction. ;)

Hey primeminister, I liked “Storm”, and in fact my hubby listened with me and then printed off chords!

I know there’s a lot of specualation on what may or may not be on the record. I think from all of the news we’re hearing though, no matter what does show up, he will not disapppoint.

Purplesmile, Lifehouse and DC coming in January!!! How awesome!!

Oops didn’t mean to imply performing in the Phillipines was odd. I just read it to mean his first concert after Idol would be there. Elliott had done tons of shows in the US before his gig there. It’s still great for Cook’s fans there that he’ll be there so early in the career.

  26. 76 jpfan Jul 26th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

Sorry I can’t edit or I’d fix the spelling mistakes. I remember another Idol who did his first concert there. Was it Bo Bice? Clay Aiken?

  27. 77 littlesparrow Jul 26th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Just because Cookie booked his first solo gig for the Pinoys doesn’t mean he won’t do another concert before then. It’s just the first one he has lined up so far. He’s mentioned before that he plans to do lots of promotion in November/December, so there will likely be other appearances before the Phillipines gig.

  28. 78 purplesmile Jul 26th, 2008 at 10:26 pm

It certainly is. In that way, it is very interesting, indeed, if not exactly odd. However, I think there hasn’t been an AI contestant that became as widely popular here as Cookie did right off the bat, thanks to the radio success of ABMB. The promoters probably saw that and grabbed the chance to bring him in…striking while the iron is hot.

I remember another Idol who did his first concert there. Was it Bo Bice? Clay Aiken?

It’s the great Constantine Maroulis. ;)

Hey wordnerdarchie, I’ve listened to most of this interview and plan to check out the rest. Very impressive! I like him, seems very insightful in the industry, yet goes with his own passions! Awesome.

Hey, can anyone enlighten me to what an AandR person is? Thanks!:)

The following was posted by Scott on the D-C.Org Fan Site and I quote:

    “A&R, From Wikipedia.org:

In the music industry, Artists and Repertoire (A&R) is the division of a record label company that is responsible for scouting and artist development. It is the link between the recording artist/act and the record label, generally to help with the artistic and commercial development of the label’s artists. An A&R person is often required to handle contractual negotiations, find songwriters and record producers for the act, and schedule recording sessions. In the UK, before the rise of the record producer, the A&R Manager would oversee recording sessions and assume responsibility for making creative decisions relating to the recording.

Part of their duties includes keeping contact with their counterparts in music publishing companies to get new songs and material from established songwriters. Contrary to common belief, it is not one of the A&R department’s main jobs to sort through the plethora of demo tapes sent by hopeful musicians to the label. A&R departments at major labels in the USA typically only accept solicited demos, or ones from business contacts with which they are familiar. However, major labels outside the USA and many independent labels still accept unsolicited demos.

Some A&R people have changed the face of modern music. John H. Hammond, for example, had a long and rich career discovering some of the biggest names in music. Artists he discovered, signed and even occasionally produced included Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin and many others. Other A&R people with similar track records include Clive Davis and Lenny Waronker. Still more, such as John Cale, are musicians and recording artists in their own right. Two A&R people in a nontraditional job role are American Idol judges, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell.”

I hope this gives you some insight on what an A & R is.

So, apparently, Cookie has a Gibson endorsement deal, which I guess is the reason he’s not using the Luna guitar he was gifted?

Wordnerdarchie, Thanks that was very helpful!

Purplesmile, he said something about Gibson to the people next to me in Cincy. I’m waiting for some kind of official announcement, but there was a reason he couldn’t wear a shirt that said Fender on it and it was related to Gibson.

purplesmile, it seems that all of david’s songs are being played here, lol. and have you seen all those pirated cds containing david cook’s AI and AH songs?(david archuleta has also a compilation pirated cd). 1 cd costs 30 pesos or something( less than a dollar).

Yeah, I’ve heard all about that, tufu. Hey, do I know you from the local forum? ;)

  38. 88 reinharv Aug 10th, 2008 at 2:46 pm

I’m pretty sure I heard David Cook say that he will be doing a concert in the Phillipines on January 27 and that after that he will begin touring in the US and that it wasn’t part of his tour schedule. I didn’t get that that was part of his tour. Folks there loved Cook and since he won the title it would probably be in a proper venue. Even if it isn’t, he’ll get a tidy sum of money just like he did doing the Wal-Mart gig which has had Underwood perform at about $250,000 a pop and Keith Urban, which I’m sure was about that amount too.

Cook’s ABMB was a big hit in the Phillipines and got plenty of airplay and was #1 there played by DJs all the time. By then Cook’s album would have already been released and he would have already begun the usual promos. He’ll probably do plenty of songs from the album and probably revisit songs like ABMB and other things they want to hear in the Phillipines. More money is generated for the artists by tours and not by actual sales of their songs.
