Anyone else like Melinda Doolittle, the shy backup singer who wants to sing lead, and know if she’s on the spoiler list of the top 24 going to Hollywood?
I noticed she’s a backup singer for Nashville acoustic soul musisian Jason Eskridge and is the 2nd contestant from the prestigious choir at the U of Memphis to make the top 24.
but some of us really love it, and I hope Taylor does too. He should be very proud of it, IMO.
I agree.. I won’t stop saying it. It’s a well made cd for the time that was put into it. It shows that Taylor is about the music and enjoyed experimenting with different sounds. The fact that he got twelves different sounding songs to fit nicely on this cd does speak volumes of his talent. IMO, talent should be watered down because this cd is not flying off the selves. It’s just not formulated enough to fit into mainstream. Can you really hear a song like TRP being wedged between “it’s over” and anything from Justin T? Maybe JTFTW and maybe DMA but not really anything else.
I’m actually listening to Taylor cd right now and I must say, this cd is a very melodic cd. Today’s music is not really melodic sounding. It is made up of mostly repetitive drum-beats with a guitar, base guitar and synthesizer mixed in. Each new song just copying the one before. I am not knocking today’s music because I do listen to a lot of it but I think if Elton John was to drop a cd today, his cd wont’ fit into the mainstream either.
I seriously don’t get the big deal about wanting his single to be on top 40 just because such and such is getting air-play there. I think that a lot of Taylor’s singles would do real well on the Adult Contemporary radio where songs with some melody is welcomed. I would much rather have Taylor’s people put him where he will gain maximum amount of air-play and let it catch on from there than to push him where he won’t fit. I don’t see Carrie’s folk pushing her to top 40 despite her success…No..She belongs in Country music and she has done quite well without top 40. I know Taylor is not as clear cut as Carrie but if any of his singles catches fire in a particular format outide of mainstream then when his next cd drops his people will know where to market him first.
I just wonder, how in the heck does she and Madonna for that matter intend to explain this to their children and grandchildren
Fergie can take a page out of maddona’s book and just don’t give a darn what others think and feel. She can just transform herself when she gets to that point in life and maybe put out a couple of children’s books. Maddona seem to have done it quite well..
Just To Feel That Way KSYV

It’s an AC station out of Solvang, CA. Welcome to the West Coast. :)
ETA: Juliegr beat me to. My apologies for redundancy.
ETA a second time: http://www.radio-locator.com/
You can put in the station’s call letters and it will give you the station’s details and even generate a map of the prospective coverage area. Things like this keep me occupied on an otherwise boring Saturday evening. I have no life. *sigh*
Please, anyone this area, call in and request Taylor. the no. is (901)375-1075 and ask for the request person…Keep calling even if the line is busy…very important..top 40 in Memphis….
Posted on another board — but I just called the station, spoke to the DJ and requested JTFTW. He said he’d see what he could do about it. Worth a try — perhaps ask for other Taylor songs.
Yeah Solvang! I’m actually about 30 mins from there….visiting my folks…..
I was surprised to see at the local Wal-Mart here…a few Daughtry, lots of Mcphee….and no Hicks….wazzup with that? Can’t believe he’s sold out in this town…..maybe they just aren’t restocking him……
Fergie can take a page out of maddona’s book and just don’t give a darn what others think and feel. She can just transform herself when she gets to that point in life and maybe put out a couple of children’s books. Maddona seem to have done it quite well..
sexygirl, WORD, it just seems like such an oxymoron to me. I can’t seem to reconcile Madonna hawking her “children’s book” in her flowery, matronly dress with the image of sex she’s so skillfully cultivated.
hapi, is Brandon the goodlooking singer who’s done backup for Christina A? I thought he was really good. Sundance delivered a powerhouse rendition of Stormy Monday, but exuded nowhere near the charisma of Taylor. Also like the “Castro” lookin’ dude….and the Jack Osborne lookalike. It should be an interesting season, but as expressed my many, I don’t think the tptb can ever again capture the success of AI5. Interesting that Simon is all of a sudden showing a sudden appreciation for blues-based singers.
I’ve been listening to KSYV for the past 20 minutes and so and it seems that John tesh has a radio show on the station. That made be laugh. Very hard. Just wanted to mention that….
…and it just got played again. I’m listening to it at this very moment. Cool. :)
ETA:
…and a third time??? I swear, I’m not making this up. Back to back plays. Weird.
I’m withholding judgement on the BJU issue for the moment. In reading his personal blog, it seems that his parents were rather…umm….devout and would only sanction his attending fundamentalist Christian universities. It’s the Dec. 7th entry titled “My Musical Journey”
remember, guys — not all “bible-thumpers” are racists. Some are just plain ole, overly religious people and would be the first to help those in need who aren’t of the same race, color, religion, or country. As hard as it is to believe, using the word “bible thumpers” is as unfair a generalization as calling all people from Mass, “bleeding heart liberals”.
I’m a Christian, and I’m always shocked at the immediate abhorrent reaction on message boards when a contestant’s affiliation with the religion is revealed. It really makes me think what the public perception of Christians (from the viewpoint of non-Christians) is. Personally, I am quite turned off by the “public face” of Christianity, which more than often is judgmental and hateful. But I always assumed that most people realized that it was merely a subset of Christianity, much like fundamental Wahabism is a subset of Islam, a peaceful religion.
I don’t wear my faith on my sleeve, mostly because I’d hate for anyone to hold me up as any kind of example of a “model” Christian, because believe me, I am not one. I don’t proselytize, though I don’t question those who feel called to do so. I don’t really discuss my religion unless someone asks me a question in which it might come up contextually, and even then, I don’t go on and on about it unless the person expresses an interest in hearing what I have to say.
But I do feel the need to speak up whenever there is a collective and automatic groan when a contestant’s faith is publicized. Speaking about one’s own faith is different than actively pushing it onto others. I won’t fault someone like Sligh (or Sean Michel) for being vocal about their faith and nothing more.
Sorry if this offends anyone–I just needed to get it off my chest.
I had not intended to offend. I edited my post after realizing while reading it that my tounge-in-cheek comment sounded less than funny.
I don’t think the issue for most people is being a Christian or being open about his beliefs, but Bob Jones U does have a rather distasteful history of sexist and racist statements.
Kat — I’m with you. Like to believe that I don’t judge people for any reason — believe in “live and let live”. I might not agree with what you do or believe but I’ll defend to the death your right to do it or hold that opinion. Also, don’t think it’s necessary to belabor a point.
Cat — it’s OK. Like to believe BJU has changed a lot of its archaic rules (like banning interracial dating) because of the uproar during the last election cycle.
Anyway, this isn’t a political debating society — on to the music.
Only watched 3 AI6 shows!!! Not into the cruel comments, lousy contestants, and disrespect toward previous winners, especially Taylor Hicks.
I’m assuming the stations received complaints about all of the above. If they didn’t they should have — but the real way for that to change is to write to the SPONSORS!
Bob Jones University had (has?) an anti-miscegenation policy. No interracial dating permitted. Hence, the reputation for racism.
That being said, Chris Sligh seems to be pretty “normal” - not overly thumperly, has a smart-ass sense of humor, and is talented.
But I do feel the need to speak up whenever there is a collective and automatic groan when a contestant’s faith is publicized. Speaking about one’s own faith is different than actively pushing it onto others.
I agree. I’m a PK (preacher’s kid), Episcopalian, but my Mom also “dabbled” in pentocostal worship services along with some of her family so I’ve experienced different flavors of Christianity. There’s nothing wrong with being a person of faith, and there are Christians who do their best to live as Jesus taught but don’t witness to people unless someone asks. But there are those who feel compelled to witness and proseletize, sometimes in inappropriate (IMO) places. The latter is where Mandisa probably stepped over the line a bit before she was voted off, and one time that I agreed with Simon when he said it was indulgent.
Julie, I hate to tell you this, but I think it’s a little too early to determine if you have indeed been cured. Wait until the Top 24 are announced and you have picked out a favorite, and then we’ll see… ;-D
DB- looks like they are playing it every 30 minutes — I have no complaints. That will probably result in a ranking. What do you think.
Are you able to vote??
Oh, I don’t know much about voting with yes.com. I just find it interesting that it’s been played three times in one hour. It sounds as if all the DJs have gone home for the night and that it’s been programmed to play every 30 minutes or someone seriously messed up.
long i am still upset about chris sligh attending bob jones univ.
I feel the same way. Someone stated that Bob Jones is just a religeous affiliated school like Notre Dame, but it it quite more than that. I live in SC not too far from Bob Jones Uni, and used to work with a girl who went to school there. She said that they were not “rascists” but did not condone interacial dating….ooookay.
Also, all of the females at that school have to where dresses or skirts down to their ankles…I see them all the time at the local Walmart.
It is a VERY conservative religeous view there.
Sorry, but it does color my opinion…can’t help it.
Wow, I can’t believe what I heard a little while ago….After watching “Without a Trace” a commercial comes on for “The Unit” and a familiar song is playing in the background. I only caught the end of it so I rewound the commercial (I love TIVO) and sure enough the song was “What I Want” by Daughtry. Woo hoo! Someone stated on the scary boards that “There and Back Again” by Daughtry was being played during a commercial for a dog show on Animal Planet. LOL
aek - The Chris Sligh / BJU connection has also jaded my opinion of him just a bit. I remember the media uproar when George W. spoke there during the 2000 elections. Inter-racial dating was banned (and still may be, I’m not sure) and there’s a strong dislike (bordering on hatred) for Catholicism. Billy Graham once attended BJU but left because the school was too conservative. I suppose Chris has a great personality, but his singing was just okay to me anyway. However, I’m not voting this year, so of course what difference does it make how I feel anyway.
It bugs me that religious groups are negatively painted with such a broad brush. There are bad people who use religion to enrich themselves and create trouble between others because by doing this they justify their own existance. In other words it keeps the money in their pockets .
Most religious people live their faith without being pushy or nasty. Just look at the disasters : Who showed up first to help and feed Katrina victims ? Answer : faith based groups. Who showed up first today to feed and help the victims of the tornados in Florida ? Answer : Faith based groups. These kind folks don’t care what color or what religion the victims are , everyone is cared for. I know of a church group from my area that has gone to Mississippi several times to help Katrina victims and they have helped caucasions , african americans orientals , all kinds of people in need and this church group doesn’t ask them what religion they are and they have never refused anyone in need.
i think of bob jones u as a really arch-conservative place where the kids can’t really listen to music or anything. so i was glad to see cat’s link above to chris sligh’s little autobiography. he really didn’t have a lot of choice in attending bju and wound up getting kicked out anyway and finished up elsewhere. if you read his blog, you’ll get a great picture of where he’s coming from musically. i’m just glad he finally was able to listen to all the music of the world.
And I don’t care what week or what month she dropped. This January doldrums thing is just another in a long line of McExcuses…
I agree with you completely. If i like an artist, it doesn’t matter what week, month, or year they put out their work-if I like them, I will support their work.
I don’t know anything about the University but I did find this information. A complete history of the racial issues are detailed on Wikipedia. It sounds like the university had its issues in the past but has changed its policies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Jones_University
Despite its history on racial issues, BJU today has a student body that includes many international and minority students and a number of interracial couples, including members of the faculty and staff. The University has also established two 501(c)(3) charitable organizations to provide scholarship assistance solely for minority students
I happen to love Taylors cd, although the Maze and Deal are my least favorites. My favorite is Wherever I Lay My Hat and Give Me Tonight. I find it exciting that Taylor can sing the different styles of music and make them his own. I don’t feel the need to put him in a box and not allow him musical freedom. I think he probably wouldve done some things different had he had complete control over the cd, but I like the flavor of the cd. He did say a new kind of music, swamp wamp, or whatever lol. So apparently, he intended to go in a somewhat different direction with his music. Few of the idols have made cds like the music they sang on AI. Those that did sold far better.
“Wherever I Lay My Hat” is one of my favorites too but it always makes me cry. My 8 year old daughter was listening to the CD with me and out of the blue she said this is my daddy’s song. When I asked her why, she said because he breaks my heart but I still love him. She hasn’t seen her dad in over 2 years and I was shocked she still thinks of him. Wherever that ass is out there, he sure is missing out on a wonderful little girl. My favorite song is Gonna Move.
Awww, neonorange. That’s quite a heartbreaking anecdote. You have such a sweet, lovely girl there.
I love both “Wherever I lay My Hat” and “Gonna Move,” too. I heard the Marvin Gaye version of WILMH and I got a totally different feeling from that. Taylor’s version actually makes me feel sorry for the guy singing despite his being a heartbreaker.
Thanks, Nevada for answering my question. It seems that the songwriters’ lot is not easy, you need not only to sell the song to TPTB and the singer, who might need to change a few words, and to share the credit.
Anyone else like Melinda Doolittle, the shy backup singer who wants to sing lead, and know if she’s on the spoiler list of the top 24 going to Hollywood?

I don’t hear people in Saudi Arabia getting a shocked reaction at hearing they’re Muslim, or in Tibet upon hearing they’re Buddhist.
Only in America do I get this silly reaction.
