Scott MacIntyre – Yahoo Interview – VIDEO

Scott MacIntyre interviews with Lindsey Parker of Yahoo Music. He talks about the tour and his ambitious post-Idol plans. He also has two dueling piano moments on tour. Watch the video interview after the jump.

I found out later, while watching the rehearsals, the reason for his excitement: On the tour he gets two dueling-piano moments, both with Matt Giraud, doing a bit of the Supremes’ “You Can’t Hurry Love” and the intro to the big finale number “Don’t Stop Believin’.”

So in our interview, Scott and I discussed how Idol has evolved musically (he admitted he would have never auditioned if he hadn’t been allowed to play piano) and his very ambitious career plans (which include not only touring and recording but also writing and producing for other artists and even writing a book). How’s THAT for “artistic,” huh?

Wow Scott always grates on me. Idk maybe it’s his personality as he seems to have a huge ego. I do like his sense of humor sometimes though. So he wouldn’t tell her what his songs were yet she was there during the rehearsals?!? Of course the reporter will hear it and relay the info (does anyone really care what Scott sings?). He sure has high ambitions…it’s kinda scary. Not a fan sorry Scott. I thought Alexis should have been in the top 10 instead of you or Michael and your disability got you further in the comp than you should have. Sigh.

• BeckyMD:

Lindsey seemed unenthusiastic. Scott is really talky. Some of this year’s top 10 like rambling, including Adam especially when he interviewed with Kris. I’m not complaining tho b/c I like listening to Adam talk :)

• LisaE:

I’m hoping “Can’t Hurry Love” is a small part of a bigger group number. I can’t imagine Scott or Matt singing that song (if in fact they are doing more than just playing piano). Actually, it’s a bad group number song all around. Eek!

• PattyH:

Scott’s ego grates on me also, but I have to say – he looks cute with a hat on!
If Michael and Megan only have 2 songs, I’m thinking Scott does too, supplemented by the piano songs, maybe?

• Ellie2:

He gets on my last nerve.

• unique28v:

I like Scott, and I think he has some good post-idol ideas. I definitely think he should write/produce for others. That seems to be his niche! I like his artistry, and am looking forward to see him “duel” with Matt on tour!!

• lucy:

His apparent ego does kind of bug me, but he’s one that I would never count out as making his goals into reality. Despite what I think is his way overblown view of his own singing, performing, song-picking, and songwriting capabilities, that confidence can probably take him pretty far when it’s combined with what appear to be multifaceted brains, a major work ethic, the sense to develop an impressive resume that he now has behind him, networking talent, dogged determination, and, not to be counted out, his backstory — that can get him in doors and get him a sympathy vote that aren’t necessarily available to others. I can’t imagine him ever doing anything that would interest me or anything that I would think was especially brilliant, but I kind of expect to see Scott McIntyre around somewhere doing something visible for a long time.

• sleeptalker:

He’s already halfway done with his album? Hmm.

I get the feeling Scott would have more success as a songwriter than as a singer. I, for one, wouldn’t buy a wide-open-mouth-wailing Scott MacIntyre album, but I’m sure he’s clever enough to write something great.

But I ditto the comment on the hat. It’s a good look for him!

• flicker:

I was never a Scott fan at all until I visited his myspace page to listen to his duet with Matt.

Scott has a song on myspace called “I’ll Take Tom”, which is a clever online-romance breakup song. It’s cute, clever, and charming. Made me go hmmmmm….. I’ll at least listen to whatever he does post-idol.

• girlygirl:

If Scott’s already half-done with his album, does that mean he’s going to release it himself? I don’t see 19 signing him.

I like Scott’s sense of humor, but he does seem to have a somewhat over-inflated opinion of himself as a musician. I didn’t think he was much of a singer from what I heard on AI. He’s a good pianist, though.

Like the hat!

• maracaibo:

Why is he copying Matt’s style with the hats?
I just don’t like his personality.. He thinks he is all that without having the talent to back it up. Just saying.

His voice grates me on the nerves. Thank god Matt is singing by himself too.

• abbysee:

Eh, he didn’t sound like too much of a blowhard here to me. I don’t understand why he shouldn’t blow his own horn, if doesn’t who will? I also put nothing past Scott, if he even has a fair to midling career, it’s more than most. I must say the hat looks adorable too. While I wouldn’t be going to the show to see him, I ain’t gonna hate that he’s there.

• Miss Chaos:

So that’s what all the meetings were about!!! :lol_tb:

• niks:

The good thing about Scott is that his ambitions for his post-Idol career are at least backed up by years-long experience of basically doing what he plans to continue doing: making music and releasing albums. He did this before, independently, and will continue to do so, regardless of whether or not he’ll get signed. But he won’t disappear into oblivion, that’s for sure. His ego and work ethic will carry him far in terms of longevity, even though he won’t be a star.

I, for one, enjoy his original material. His songs are really well thought-out and written, which makes up for his mediocre vocal ability.

• Victoria:

Why is he copying Mattà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s style with the hats?

Matt isn’t exactly the first person to wear a hat, haha. I think it looks good on Scott.

I’m not a fan of Scott’s voice, but if he’s good at songwriting and producing, I hope he has a solid career there. I’m glad he and Matt are doing the dueling pianos on tour since it got cut from the finale.

I think I’m in the minority, but Scott’s attitude doesn’t bother me. He seems a little overconfident at times, but to me he just seems like one of those really smart people who sometimes don’t know where to stop. He’s a pretty funny guy, judging from some of his comments during Idol (“We can move it closer!”).

• galaxygrrl:

I always found Scott a little creepy. And this is just as creepy. I think the issue is he actually doesn’t seem to have a sense of humor. With other idols there is more to chat about and they have a full life, Scott, less so.

• isisdagmar:

I found Scott confusing. He has all these music degrees, and scholarships and awards, right?

So why did he seem so mediocre at best on the show? I’m not enough of a musician to really be able to tell how well he was playing the piano, but he certainly didn’t grab my attention with it the way Matt or Kris did, and as a singer he seemed like his voice was uninteresting and always cracking and straining all over the place. Not to mention every song sounded bland and the same. I don’t get it.

• hwc:

So why did he seem so mediocre at best on the show?

Idol wannabees are usually pretty mediocre. This season’s cast was unusual in that it not only had a lot of mediocre singers, but a lot of boring singers, too. Half the cast, it seemed, was in the mellow white dude R&B camp. No country singers. No African American male singers. Not much to break up the monotony. They needed to have one of the Matt/Scott/Anoop group, not all three.

• iluvai:

What a great interview. I really like Scott here. I will definitely check out Scott’s cd.

I don’t think Scott is over-confident. He seems very real to me. Why shouldn’t he believe in himself? He just made top 10 on the hottest show despite his limitations. That’s pretty amazing.

I do think good things will come to him. He may not become “famous”, but he seems talented and I think he will enjoy a career in the music industry. Not everyone can be a pop singer, but there are sure a lot of other career paths for him in the music business.

Good luck Scott!!!!

• annabelina:

He’s already halfway done with his album? Hmm.

3 words: Kristy Lee Cook

• fox:

Awww, Scott looked adorable in the hat! I like Scott a lot and I love that he’s so articulate in interviews. I look forward to seeing him on tour. There’s something about him that I find endearing :)

• LadyBeBop:
If Scott’s already half-done with his album, does that mean he’s going to release it himself?
Yes. He already has five pre-Idol albums out there. I already have two of them. One is a collection of classical piano instrumentals recorded when he was only 14 or 15. The second was released two years ago. It’s a collection of pop songs, mostly written while in England. Pretty good vocals, but great songwriting. He can easily see him songwriting for others, and probably sooner than later.

Although he’ll go the independent route, he may try for somewhat of a marketing distributor. His albums are presently distributed by a small online record store (CDBaby) that sells independently produced albums, but do not do much marketing. He realizes he’s not going with 19E.

Love Scott. Do not love the hat.

It’s the curse of the lifelong classical training, I think. I know because I suffered from it myself. He played pretty complex stuff on the show, it seemed to me, and played it easily, but classical training tends to leave a lot of people with a little stiffness about their playing, and that’s what I saw in Scott. He’s a good pianist but he doesn’t quite roll with it the way you expect in pop music. (ditto for his singing, although I think he’s a way way better pianist than he is a singer.)

Matt was the one who impressed me — he played a lot *with* the band, not on his own, which is tough, and really exhibited what I thought was very organic and free playing, and pretty complex in its own right. Kris didn’t really impress me either — his playing was way too simple to be impressive, I thought. But I know he hasn’t been playing very long.

• Mary102:

I really liked Scott (till the week he got the boot, which was a really really bad performance from him, and showed that he had pretty much gone as far as he could against more talented guys). He had a great sense of humor with the judges, and it never seemed fake. Though I agree he does come across as a little too self-important in some of these interviews.

Regarding his AI performances, his voice is limited, but very pretty when used in its proper range, in the proper style. Unfortunately, that style tends to gravitate toward an older, folksy style (like James Taylor) rather than anything that’s really current or pop-oriented. But if he wants to either make more albums and/or write, I suggest the folk music route – very good fit for him.

I couldn’t stop myself from smiling at those comments like ego and getting on the nerves. His pre-AI CD “Somewhere Else” (2007, available at cdbaby.com) is right here in front of me and on the back cover, it says:

“Words, music, arrangement, production, engineering, and mixing by S. D. MacIntyre”

What else do you people need as a proof that Scott D. MacIntyre is capable of producing his own album?
And yes, his EP “View From Above” with 6 original songs will be available for downloads from amazon.com by July 1, 2009.
And yes, he is halfway done with his album and will be releasing it by fall 2009
And yes, I care about what Scott sings.
And yes, I got a complete collection of all his 6 pre-AI CDs (since age 11)
And yes, I listen to his songs all day.
And yes, I am waiting for the book that he will write.
And yes, I look forward to seeing him on tour and I will wear red.
And yes, I believe he is capable of making a pop album.
And yes, I believe he will be making music for a long time.

I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT SCOTT MACINTYRE!!!!!
