Season 7 Top 7 Results - Recap

Kristy Lee Cook is eliminated

Elliott Yamin sings “Free”. And Mariah Carey sings “Bye Bye”.

The groups are beginning!

On one side of the stage:

  • Jason Castro
  • Carly Smithson
  • Syesha Mercado

On the other side of the stage:

  • David Cook
  • Kristy Lee Cook
  • Brooke White

ETA: Sorry, the database crashed, and I was distracted. This is what happened tonight…

Ryan brings David Archuleta out to center stage and declares him safe. He asks David Cook and Syesha Mercado to trade places, creating an obvious Bottom 3 and Top 3–Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook and Brooke White on one side, Jason Castro Carly Smithson and David Cook on the other.

He asks David to choose the Top 3. David sits in the middle of the stage instead of choosing. Ryan tries to scoot him over to the side where Jason Castro, Carly Smithson and David Cook are standing, but David doesn’t budge. The Top 3 join him center stage. David Cook sits down on the floor next to him. Ryan declares all four safe. Jason Castro grins and sits down on the floor too. Carly Smithson is so giddy, she jumps up and down. Ryan sends them over to the couches.

Ryan asks Kristy Lee Cook, Brooke White and Syesha Mercado to take center stage. After the break, Syesha Mercado is sent back to the couches. Brooke White is declared safe. Kristy Lee Cook is eliminated.

Even though this was a painful week for me with Michael gone, it was a big payoff with Kristy finally going. It’s probably for the best after calling Simon a butt judging by the look on his face, lol. I think she’s been prepared for this for a long time and didn’t even seem emotional or the least bit surprised about it. I did like how she sang to Simon.

Having Ryan group them and then switch people around was much more interesting when you really didn’t care who went home. I was surprised when they put Jason and DC in different groups but never thought either was going home. I don’t think this is the right top 6 since it doesn’t include MJ but of the 7 it probably is. I hope the next to go are Brooke and Syesha.

I really hope Jason will make it through next week. I think he’ll be going first.

That said, I really can’t see anyone but Syesha or Brooke leaving.

I need to stop analyzing the show and just watch.

Finally got to see the show and thought it was the best elimination show of the season with drama and good performances.

I actually liked Mariah’s song and it went beautifully with Elliott’s comments about his Mom. The hand writing thing was bittersweet and showed that Elliott is actually watching the show. Let’s just say that when he was voted off third, even my wildest fantasies didn’t have him showing up on Idol three times in Season 7. David A actually seemed like a 17 year old kid which was sweet.

Bye Kristy, you had alot of spunk.

I am just so glad KLC’s finally gone. She finally started showing some personality and I’m glad she was able to go on a good performance night - her sing out was good. But she long overstayed her welcome as far as I’m concerned.
So nice to see Elliott last night. I teared up a bit just thinking about him losing his mom so recently. He looks SO different than when he first came to Idol, and he has really worked his performance style out - not so shy anymore! Idol was truly a life-changing experience for him. He was in good voice.

Elliott was fantastic. “Free” and “Alright” are my favorite songs on his CD. I hope Free is a single for him.

I thought Elliott did well and glad that they mentioned his mom. I didn’t think Mariah was all that but enjoyed seeing her mike/stand. I thought it was interesting that Simon admitted to being tough on Carly. I think he was that way with Michael also. The trouble is that people listen to what he says even if the intention is to make them better. I do think what the judges say can effect votes negatively although sometimes it gives weaker singers pity votes.

I thought Elliot looked fantastic. He seems to have grown into his teeth too. Maybe it’s because he’s not smiling as big to show them all. His performance was superb!

I noticed the scarf he wore and recall that Neil Diamond often wears a scarf during his performances. Perhaps it is a Hebrew thing. Maybe someone who know Hebrew traditions can give us more information.

As far as the idols are concerned, I favor the boys over the girls. I love Jason Castro but think David Cook will stay longer than Jason. It’s really a guys season this year!

Has Brooke had the pimp spot at all yet? If not, I think it’s her turn…

Has Brooke had the pimp spot at all yet? If not, I think it’s her turn

Yes she has. It was the night she sang YOU GOT A FRIEND.

Personally, I just couldn’t stand the way Carly acted last night. The hyper happiness, etc. Ick.

Elliott was thier last night from he this blog and it was nice to hear about the message about his mom. Listen to his song and it was nice I just do not like when artists do runs in thier songs and that includes him. Maybe it is his new style or “IN” in R&B pop music. I am in the minority here never thought Elliott was an underdog and his voice reminded me of Clay or Rueban so I thought he would get radio play. I was glad Kat was on the show this year she deserved it after getting the shaft from season 6 .

Kristy leaving was not a major shocker and see her in country music. I wonder if American Idol will lose the country fans and how next week will go?

(first of all - thanks MJ for helping me get on - yay!)

Misc. thoughts from last night’s show:

    1. Group number was the worst of the season - were they off-key, or did it sound like that because my hearing has been permanently damaged by too many loud concerts through the years? (eta: only when they sang as an entire group - not each person’s solo, those were good).

    2. Jason - give David Cook back his shirt.

    3. Cookie - return Jason’s shirt to him immediately, and NEVER wear it again.

    4. Elliott - he has come a LONG way since his days on AI - he was so charismatic, sounded great. Really enjoyed him.

    5. Was Mariah’s song really appropriate for elimination night? (BYE, BYE??!!).

    6. Was anyone else worried about Mariah’s dress? It got shorter the longer she sang.

    7. I was a bit surprised at the group breakdown at first. I thought for a second that Jason was in the B3. Glad to see he’s still there. He looked hawt last night, but that’s because of #2 above.

Does anyone remember how they handle eliminations night when they get to the final 6? If they break them down by groups of 3, there is a 50% chance that each person will be B3. I can’t remember.

  13. 113 sciencefan Apr 17th, 2008 at 10:58 am

I LOVED Jason’s solo last night! I’m still trying to figure out what was so DIFFERENT about it… maybe because it wasn’t quite his style really, I guess, but BEAUTIFUL!

  14. 114 Kirsten Apr 17th, 2008 at 11:17 am

Has Brooke had the pimp spot at all yet? If not, I think it’s her turn…

Everybody remaining in the competition has gone last at least once. Carly has gone the longest without being last (she was last on Top 12 girls night…Final 24). Syesha is next longest (last on Top 8 girls night). Brooke had the pimp spot last week.

Jason and David C are the only remaining contestants who have never gone first. 33% of the contestants remaining have never gone first. They should abolish going first (Monday mornings and Friday afternoons). LOL. When was the last time somebody went so deep in the competition with never going first?

Melinda was the last one last year to sing first and that was on Final 8 night. Jordin never sang first during the finals, but she did sing first during the semis. In Season 5, Chris D first went first on Final 7 night and Elliott first went first on Final 5 night. Hmmm…maybe I’ll have to figure this out for all 7 seasons.

    Something I just noticed:

    Chris D: 6-10-2-12-4-6-7-4-1
    David A: 6-10-2-12-3-8-6-7-1

    I’m sensing a pattern here.

  15. 115 calimari Apr 17th, 2008 at 11:50 am

Brooke had the pimp spot last week & here I am asking if she’s had it yet. You can see how well my memory is working lately! If Carly hasn’t had it since being in top 12, she should get it next week.

  16. 116 primeminister Apr 17th, 2008 at 1:51 pm

    Thanks, Kristen, for those stats.

Maybe Archuleta will be the OMG! Shocking! Boot! at #4. We shall see.

  17. 117 cheese Apr 17th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

    Chris D: 6-10-2-12-4-6-7-4-1
    David A: 6-10-2-12-3-8-6-7-1

Freaky! So when is Archie’s next pimp spot then?

I think Jason or David C will have to go first next week. DC has only gone early in the performance order once in the top 12, so it should be him, IMO. I hope he opens the show with an awesomely memorable “Heaven on Their Minds.”

  18. 118 sammwiz Apr 17th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

I wonder who will sing “Memory” ……….

  19. 119 Karen Apr 17th, 2008 at 3:41 pm

I’d say Syesha will get Memory and Carly will get I Don’t Know How to Love Him, which she would be GREAT on. Maybe Brooke could do You Must Love Me from Evita (ALW may not have written it, since it was added for the movie). The range on it is pretty small, and it’s not a belting song.

I’d sell my 8-yr-old son to hear Cookie to do All I Ask of You from Phantom.

  20. 120 Qzar99 Apr 17th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Didn’t Jordin sing first during top 3? I thought she broke the curse.

  21. 121 nmc Apr 17th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

    Chris D: 6-10-2-12-4-6-7-4-1
    David A: 6-10-2-12-3-8-6-7-1

Kristen, your mind with numbers is amazing. That is a VERY interesting coincidence there between ChrisD and DavidA.

  22. 122 nmc Apr 17th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Apparently I don’t know how to use the blockquotes button very well.

  23. 123 Hisaki Apr 17th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

MJ, you forgot about us “lambs”! ;)

Didn’t Jordin sing first during top 3? I thought she broke the curse.

She did, yes. A whole truckload of patterns were broken last year, apparently.

Anyway, I still don’t think KLC deserved to go home (not that I ever liked Kristy, but she was definitely building up). I was waiting for the paramedics to come once Brooke got the boot, but hopefully the scare will bring her back to her senses and she can make a comeback the way KLC did. That said, I doubt she’s going to last much longer anyway. The girls all seem next in line for the boot (*trying to ignore the stupid boy-girl-boy pattern right here in hopes that Jason will dodge the freaking bullet*).

  24. 124 LaFonda Apr 17th, 2008 at 11:02 pm

Can Brooke please be next? She came off as such a whiny bitch last night. I couldn’t stand it. And her sister must agree because why else would she schedule a wedding right in the middle of her sisters TV stint?

David A’s mom is a mail order bride. lol.
