Simon Cowell on the Ellen Degeneres Show - VIDEO

Simon Cowell

  • Simon thinks it will come down to song choice, and for that reason, David Cook will win.
  • He explains that he wouldn’t have said that 9 or 10 weeks ago, but that over the weeks, Cookie had two or 3 performances that were “staggeringly” good, while Archie sorta flat lined.
  • Simon doesn’t think Archie has the personality to be the American Idol. He thinks he would struggle a bit on the interview. Simon thinks he’s been “trained to do this over a period of time” and that he really hasn’t experienced life.
  • Simon has seen worse stage parents on Idol. He said he had “mothers practically attacking him after the show.” He says Jeff needs to relax a bit.

Hell mj is more fair and balanced than Foxnews

    AMEN TO THAT!

3rd Place aftermath on tvsquad.com is very very interesting. The 3rd place finalists — except for Baby V, seem to have a fairly good career. Nikki and Jasmine were very good, and I see them breaking out with a hit record any day now.

So I wouldn’t cry for the 3rd place finalists, they’re doing OK.

  3. 53 skylight1219 May 20th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

Oh, please, the judges do this every season. I don’t approve of it, but, that isn’t going to change things. And, just what’s so wrong with David A. coming in 1st place? Yes, it is first place, right behind the winner. It sure didn’t hurt Clay Aiken.

And, the wheels on the bus go round and round. They’re heading straight for Archie. But, he’s going to be fine even if he doesn’t take the title. With Cook winning, they have co-winners this season, just like in season 2. Archie will have Cook along to help him with the interviews, just as Clay did with Ruben. Ruben wasn’t an eloquent speaker, and, a man of very few words. Clay carried the ball, just as Cook is going to have to do with Archie

And I have to say - biased blogs? Rickey’s is the epitome of one. It’s Arch-central, and I NEVER go and suggest he should be less biased, because it’s his blog and he’s free to do with it as he wishes.
Somehow, I don’t see the Archie fans over there complaining how unfair it is to Cook fans that we only have about 1/5 the threads and pimpage.

I agree. Have never seen a blog quite like that one.it actually creeps me out a little.

Last year it was the site for Sanjaya fest….and where is he now? Rickey hardly posts anything about Sanjaya and it will happen with David A next year…all forgotten about. :smile_wp:

Sally, that third place thing was interesting. Some of the very best have ended up in third.

Just heard that our local theater will be a site on the “Idols in Concert for the Holidays” tour. This is supposed to feature four of the top 10 finalists from each season. Hopefully, it will showcase some of the Idols we haven’t heard much from. I’d love to see someone like Vonzell on this tour.

  6. 56 Duke May 20th, 2008 at 5:52 pm

Ya- Archie is getting the cold shoulder from Idol now…total bullshit. I’m sick of the DC pimping by mr. cowell.

SORRY BUT IT WAS NOTHING LIKE THIS…GO READ THE BLOGS ON MY SITE FROM THE LAST WEK AND A HALF…LOOK AT ALL WE UNCOVERED…AND I FIND IT QUITE RUDE THAT PEOPLE FEEL THEY HAVE TO MAKE FUN OF OR MINIMIZE ARCHIE. I DIDN’T MAKE FUN OF COOK AT ALL. DAVID ARCHULETA HAS DONE PLENTY OF INTERVIEWS AND HAS DONE FINE (SEE THE RADIO AND TV HOMECOMING INTERVIEWS) SO SIMON IS BLOWING SMOKE OUT HIS a** WITH THAT REMARK.

I WASN’T TALKING ABOUT WIN OR WHO LOSES…I AM TALKING ABOUT THE BIAS…THE MANIPULATION OF ONE CONTESTANT TO MAKE ANOTHER SHINE AND I AM CERTAIN IF THE STORY WAS REVERSED…IF THE PRESS HAD BEEN TALKING TRASH ABOUT COOKS FAMILY MEMBER, IF LYTHGOE HAD SABOTAGED DAVID COOK TO MAKE ARCHULETA LOOK GOOD YOU ALL WOULD BE SCREAM,ING BLOODY MURDER NOW.

EITHER CONTESTANT DESERVES TO WIN…THEY BOTH HAVE WORKED HARD.

I AM TALKING ABOUT THE CREDIBILITY THIS YEAR AND THE BIAS HAS SURPASSED ANY OTHER YEAR I CAN THINK OF.

  9. 59 jpfan May 20th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

Yes, the big bus is coming for Archie. But runners up get signed so that’s cool. I don’t think Archie will be forgotten in a year at all. If he gets some good songs, he’ll get noticed. Aside from his love of McPhee, Foster is very good at identifying who got the MOR chops - he’s the producer for Josh Groban and Bubble.

I think Archie will be one of the few #2s who doesn’t flop. I’m buying into the Cook has got this in the bag based on song choices and Simon’s comments. Too bad, because I think Archie is the bettter singer.

  10. 60 ben_meova May 20th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

and one more thing…I have cited you a lot on my page MJ…thanks for all the hard work you did this season on this page…yours is one of the few I trust and suggest to people…so thanks again

  11. 61 reinharv May 20th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

I don’t care what the judges say when they do their critique. It’s their opinion and I am certainly not swayed by what they say. I’ll vote for the person who sang & performed the best on that night and I also take in consideration what their overall performance has been up to that date also. Simon thought Carly did really well (as did the rest of the judges) and she got voted off the next day.

That is their job–it’s to critique the performances good or bad.

It’s nice to blog on a site where a lot of people have different opinions and there isn’t blatant favoring; however eventually, you pick your favorite.

P.S. I saw the interview David Foster had and I’d like to know what he’s sniffing???

mj: that was a good comment. LOL

  12. 62 pj May 20th, 2008 at 5:56 pm

Thanks for posting these interviews, MJ. :-) I wonder who the “worst” stage parent was.

Ah, well, that was before my Idol viewing started in full force. I think I may have seen a couple of shows that year.

  13. 63 sumidol May 20th, 2008 at 6:02 pm

I started coming to this blog to see info on Jason and I never felt like he was dissed by Mj or not covered on here, even though her favorite is Cook?? I STILL meet up with Jason lovers on here - on my bookmarked Jason (mj) page.

    skylight1219:

I suggest if you want a lovefest with Archie, then run, don’t walk to Rickey’s site.

LOL - you are so right, but they probably came here to see if the lovefest is here too and if not, try to convince people of the error or their ways. :guns_tb:

  15. 65 skylight1219 May 20th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Building up one’s favorite, and, tearing down another doesn’t result in anyone having a change of heart or mind. And, don’t try to convince me why one should win over the other. I didn’t say Archie doesn’t have a good voice, because he does. I just don’t think he’s mature enough to win this competition, plus, he hasn’t even gone through puberty yet. But, can we convince his fan base of this? No, so, why even try? Yet, they seem hell bent on us changing our viewpoint.

If Archie’s fans think this is bad, just wait until the media gets hold of him post Idol. It will be brutal. They’ll probably spend most of their waking moments, trying to set the pundits straight on why he is a superstar, and, all wrong in their assesments.

    Welcome to show business!

  16. 66 Kirsten May 20th, 2008 at 6:14 pm

Thanks for posting these interviews, MJ. :-) I wonder who the “worst” stage parent was.

McPhee’s parents were also pretty bad too. Remember the night when Simon apologized for criticizing Kat? According to the insider reports, the night before, when they went to commercials, Papa McPhee made a beeline for the judges’ chairs. Simon and Randy managed to escape, but poor Paula got the full blast (I wonder if that’s why she refused to apoligize the next day).

I’m not saying that he is the reason Simon apologized, I’m just using the apology as a landmark (I believe that was the yellow dress night as well).

Jeff is mighty tame with his glares and not giving standing Os.

  17. 67 Seraphina May 20th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

I just have to say…love peeps who crash a party and then complain about the entertainment.

You’ve heard it before, but thanks once again for all the work you do, MJ! There’s good reason why this is the one and only site I visit for AI scoop. ;)

  18. 68 skylight1219 May 20th, 2008 at 6:16 pm

Just imagine if Kat had been 17 years old. I cringe to think about it.

And, for the record, I think I read that MJ said she even voted some for Jason during the season,so, it hasn’t all been about David Cook.

  19. 69 smartcookie May 20th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

“Welcome to show business” is how I feel, too. Anybody who tries out for this show has to know that if they make it very far they are going to face 1) mean judges, 2) cameras in their face 24/7, 3) lots of emotional stress, 4) too little sleep, 5) crappy song choices rammed down their throats and/or lots of clearance issues, 6) fans who burst into tears at the mention of their names and 7) general unfairness and unpleasant treatment. It’s what they sign up for!

At least nobody is making them eat worms, compete against other drunk cheerleaders and sorority girls to sleep with one unworthy guy, or hook up to a lie detector and tell their husbands whether they’re cheating on them. (Just trying to say that AI is hardly the worst when it comes to reality TV.)

Part of show biz is personality and ability to deal effectively with media. I think that’s a fair thing to judge. And it’s not just Simon because Seacrest said the same thing, warning Larry King to have extra questions ready to try to get something out of Archie.

  20. 70 nomi May 20th, 2008 at 6:22 pm

…(Simon)said Fantasia was (and I’m paraphrasing) just a bunch of noise; that she came out of nowhere, screamed and left abruptly; that she’s talented but she’s marketing herself all wrong and that’s why she’s not selling; she should be singing stuff like summertime, and that he didn’t really care if she never spoke to him again. But it was funnier when he said it.

Well, of course, Simon knows best.

He knows about making money. I think Fatasia’s biggest offense to Simon, based on that night, is that she wasn’t Leona. Don’t get me wrong; LL has a fantastic voice and is beautiful but who cares?

  21. 71 jpfan May 20th, 2008 at 6:25 pm

I agree about changing opinions especially this late in the game. I think Cook is a run of the mill rocker who is somewhat overrated. I think off the show, he’ll sound like most out there. He’ll be unoriginal. However, they’ve wanted a rock winner since they got cheated with Daughtry. So it works for them. Plus they need a winner who can sell albums after one big flop and one semi-flop. Cook has the potential to sell.

I am making my BOLDEST prediction even. Win or lose, Archie will get more tabloid attention after the show than Cook. While he seems autistic on the show, he actually has a personality. He will be more interesting to follow than Cook who is a bit of a bore.

No need to convince me that I’m wrong. We’ll know in about 3- 6 months. Plus I’ve never voted on Finale night and won’t blemish a perfect record tonight so I’m a bystander.

  22. 72 Kirsten May 20th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

Building up one’s favorite, and, tearing down another doesn’t result in anyone having a change of heart or mind.

I totally beg to differ. Many people have commented that they liked (or at least didn’t mind) a certain contestant but grew to hate that contestant based on the OTT reactions of their fans. It’s not fair, but it’s human for people to react like that.

So, I suggest that if fans really want to help their favourite, don’t go OTT. Don’t liken the competition to cockroaches or junk food. Grant that the opposition does have some talent and the fans aren’t clueless idiots with no lives. Just say it’s a matter of differences in taste.

But, if you just want to win a pissing match, than pull out the hyperbole. Accuse the other side of ruining Idol with their rabid voting. Make up a name to insult them. Say, repeatedly, “I don’t know why anybody could like so-and-so”. Yell at others for being biased. You may just win the match, but you may also end making some people dislike your favourite and an entrenched fanwar. This is a proven strategy of both Taylor and Daughtry fans from Season 5 and the results reverb to this day.

So, I agree with skylight that you will never convince people to like your favourite by tearing down their favourites, but you may convince them to hate your favourite.

Disclaimer: I know, I know. This is typical stuff around final time. People get excited. People want to convince others to vote for their favourites. Heck, people are trying to convince themselves. But, really (and both sides are guilty of doing it today), it’s not helping. LOL. I’m such a bossy lecturer these days. I guess it’s because I like both dudes and this is all making me feel caught in the middle. Kumbaya anybody?

  23. 73 skylight1219 May 20th, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Actually, Cook seems to be highly intelligent. Even Syesha said he intimated her for a while, because he is a word nerd.

I don’t know why I even get involved in these discussions, since I’m not voting for either. I just think Cook should win.

  24. 74 mj May 20th, 2008 at 6:31 pm

And, for the record, I think I read that MJ said she even voted some for Jason during the season,so, it hasn’t all been about David Cook.

I’m a bad fan. I always split my vote. I voted for both Cook and Jason up until Top 4, then I was all Cook. Early in the season, I voted for as many as 4 contestants at one time.

Last year, I stopped voting altogether after Top 4. Even though I was a Blake fan (and Sligh before him) I thought any of the Top 3 would make a fine winner. I thought both Jordin and Blake would have success on the charts. Well, I was half right!

Season 5, I was a Taylor fan, I wanted him to win, but would have been fine with an Elliott win. If Daughtry had won, I would have dealt. I kinda knew he’d be more successful than Taylor. I split my votes between Taylor and Elliott all the way to the finale, where I only voted for Taylor.

I usually have several favorites during the season. This year it was Cook, Jason, Brooke and Michael.

And in the end, if my favorite doesn’t win, I’m bummed for a little bit, but I get over it.

  25. 75 carolinagirl May 20th, 2008 at 6:35 pm

    Kirsten-great post!

I like both Davids…they are both talented and will sell well in each of their respective markets. There is usually one person each season that touches my heart and makes me “feel” more than any other and this year it is DA. I don’t look at his age, life experience, conversational skills, marketability, or anything else. It’s who moves me, plain and simple.

Good luck to both Davids tonight!!
