Simon Cowell picks Carly Smithson’s song for Mariah Carey Week - “Without You” - VIDEO Spoiler

Apologies for the clip. The sound is out of sync, but it’s worth watching anyway. Simon Cowell’s girlfriend Terri Seymour asks him who he thinks will pull off Mariah Carey week. Yes, this coming week Mariah Carey will be the mentor, and the theme is HER SONGS and only her songs. YIKES!

Anyway. Simon tells Terri that he thinks it’s a real opportunity for Carly Smithson. Terri then spills the beans. She tells Simon that Carly told her that she’s planning on performing the song he suggested for her in an interview.

Carly will be singing Mariah Carey’s “Without You”.

Carly: PLEASE LOVE ME DADDY! Maybe Simon will finally be pleased with Carly and she’ll be a happy, happy girl at last.

Oh, and Paula has a suggestion for the boys if they want to hit those high notes. But you have to check out the video And take the poll! after the jump. Oh that Paula!

I agree, XO. Like you, I was really impressed with both of them in the IGB group songs. They both have impressive lower ranges, but can belt the hell out of a song too. Maybe there will be a duet on tour. All I can do is hope. :)

I also hope there’s also a manband again on tour this year. All of the guys play instruments (I think… does Chikezie play anything?), so it could happen!

If Carly can start picking up steam, I think she could possibly go beyond top 4. But at the same time, I think her votes would go to DC when she left, so I kinda don’t want her to last. LOL. I’m so selfish. ;)

    does Chikezie play anything?

    harmonica. LOL

LOL, Primeminister. That’s right, I forgot about the harmonica.

I hope someone sings “Heartbreaker” so I can fall over laughing at how horrible it is! haha!

I’m seriously looking forward to this week. I think that even though it’s completely hypocritical (the judges telling them never to sing Whitney/Mariah/Celine/etc. and then forcing them to), like someone said earlier, it’s going to force them out of their comfort zones. I think it will force the boys to be especially creative with their songs, and it should be good.

Cooktard! HA! Does that make me a Castrotard?

I googled MC’s #1 hits and WY is not on that list. I thought I read somewhere that it was only her #1 hits.

Go Jason. These guys there work cut out form them. A lot of arrangements will need to be made to accommodate their voices to hers.

Everyone is always told not to try and sing Whitney, Mariah and Celine and now they *have* to sing her songs?

How two-faced is that? And why am I even asking about the most two-faced show in existence?

And how will the three boys fare trying to sing Mariah with her supposedly 8 octave voice? Forget Brook and Jason (who are both charming) since I don’t think they have 2 octave voices.

This may be the messiest week of all. However, my addiction forces me to watch, lol.

I agree with you, purplesmile. Carly’s rendition of Here You Come Again was very original – did anyone else ever slow it down like that? – and her voice was very enjoyable, until she started screaming. I was impressed with her that night.

Sometime recently, I heard one of the judges - I think it was Paula - say in an interview that they don’t know who Carly is as an artist because they think she’s picking songs that she thinks will please them. I guess it’s a fine line they walk. Simon is kind of “the voice of America” in my opinion. He doesn’t often get it wrong. In a way, you have to please Simon if you want to please America, hence the voting public.

HaHa! What a classic picture, Simon,Teri, and Randy, HaHa!

Snarly….just go home. I want you off my tv this week. She reminds me of this girl I went to highschool with that to this day, I still can’t stand. The air of desperation that hangs like a cloud over her head turns my stomach. Grow a set Snarly…then maybe I’ll like you.

AHhhhhh Cheese…you know my Cookie Love runs deep and true. I would never not vote for him….but….you gotta admit if Jason pulls out Touch My Body, it will be the highlight of every season I have spent watching this show. If he throws in the hootchie dance moves, I can and will die one very happy camper… :mrgreen_wp:

Am I allowed entrance into Cooktardsville? LOL.

The only MC songs I know are “We Belong Together” and “Hero” (which is really ironic, for me), so I honestly can’t give any suggestions as to what people are going to sing. I need to do a lot of Youtube-ing in the next day or two.

As much as I love him, I can’t shake out of my head the picture of Jason doing WBT. Does anyone else think that could produce some hilarious results? Hehe. But seriously speaking, Syesha’s probably going to pick that one up.

There is a big difference with an AI performer choosing to imitate Mariah song from a theme night of 50 or hundreds of other songs vs. being specifically asked to bring their own interpretation to a Mariah song when that is theme. I see no hypocrisy here.

The entire show is covers so every performer is compared to whoever made the song a hit or even to previous Idols who did it. The more recognizable the original is, the more direct the comparison. When you do poorly, you suffer. When you do well, you get praise.

Kelly Clarkson received praise for doing Mariah’s Without You and Celine’s Think Twice; K-Locke got praise for Celine’s My Heart Will Go On; and Leona did very well with Whitney’s iconic I Have Nothing.

I have an idea..lets just all vote for Jason no matter what and tick off the PTB! lol! I do wonder what he and Brooke are going to sing. And I agree it will be interesting to see what Simons comments are for Carly or Surly..lol…she is not my cup of tea but she does have a passable voice. I heard Amanda Overmeyer sang the National Anthem at a MotoCross championship but cant find video anywhere ..did anyone else hear this?

Actually, Jason’s tied for second place with Carly and Archuleta in terms of range (not including falsetto).

Brooke, on the other hand, is dead last.

David Cook should sing “Against All Odds” . He’ll have an idol moment with it. The judges will love it and especially if he does it with a rock edge.

Brooke will probably sing Butterfly and after her pitchy rendition and judges bashing her she’ll say “I picked it because I am a naive butterfly spreading my wings”..

Randy will eat up Carly’s version of Without You like it’s candy. Simon will compare her to Kelly Clarkson.

Syesha will sing “When You Believe” because it is a Whitney and Mariah duet, and that way she will butcher a Mariah and Whitney song at the same time and then wonder why the judges tell her not to.

Kristy Lee will countrify “One Sweet Day”

It would be really cute if David A sang “Fantasy”. A 17-year old Mormon boy singing about his fantasy..

Would they let anyone sing Against All Odds? Ramiele sang it on the top 16 night.

You might get carded, Hisaki. LOL ;)

Good for Carly. This is her chance. She’s really grown on me.

I think tonight is going to be Carly’s Night! If she pulls off the song “Without You” she could actually have that absolute moment that everyone has been waiting to see from her! Simon felt the same and also stated to Carly in a previous week, “you have the best vocals, no one can touch you really.” I really wished she was singing ‘Bringing on the Heartbreak’ tonight though because that’s another big song and Mariah Carey never really went big with that song so I feel this would have been a perfect opportunity for Carly to shine and to make the song her own! But ‘Without You’ is a great song. Carky could actually tonight put herself in the position where she will now be “the one to beat”. America is pulling for you CARLY!!!
