So You Think You Can Dance - Finale - Results

Thursday night’s finale made up for Wednesday’s tired performance show. Loved seeing some of the best dances of the season reprised. What fun to see Nigel and Mary dance. Awesome group dances, and the reunion of dancers from past seasons was a real treat. The two hours just flew by. Very entertaining! Although the ending wasn’t a surprise, it was still pretty cool to see Joshua’s reaction to being voted America’s Favorite Dancer. Heh.

Katee was given a new prize–$50,000 for being the Top Girl. I wonder if the eliminations were announced according to who polled the fewest votes? It was never announced that way. I’m thinking that Katee was singled out earlier (I’m thinking she actually came in second) so she could have her own separate moment as Top Girl.

Anyway, I loved covering this show this summer. Thank you everyone for taking the ride with me! I’ll be back next season, for sure…

Oh, yay! My favs won on both this show and AI.

They showed my fav dances–No Air, Bleeding Love, and Sonya’s wild number. The only one of my favs that was missing was The Bed.

I really loved the kids in the final 6. Such grace and power and sweetness and class.

(I liked Wade’s choreography for Cirque, but jeez, I’ll bet it gave some little kids nightmares, lol. Tribute to dead rabbits?)

ALLLLL four of those dancers most definitely have that something extra special in my small little book, I saw that spark right away, the first time I watched Joshua. SpenserJ I do believe you saw that in Twitch right off and a whole lot of other people. Courtney crept up on me and I just adore her, Katee is a wonderful dancer. I loved the door routine where Twitch most definitely did more than hold it up - SpenserJ ssssshhhhh - dont you hate getting modded but sometimes we all just feel so strongly about someone it just comes out doesnt it??? I loved tonight but I am so sad to see this end in large part because I will miss the banter back and forth on this blog in regards to this season of SYTUCD.

OMG! I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED the Wade Robeson dance!! BRILLIANT!!

  4. 54 Polaris Aug 8th, 2008 at 12:28 am

What i really hate about these shows is that the second place finisher never gets the spot light. Everyone got to say what they felt about their experience and had a goodbye package shown with their best moments. I really wanted to hear what twitch had to say but instead he got pulled off the stage :(

All in all, it was a great show and all 4 of them are remarkable dancers. I hope they go to accomplish great things.

and thanks MJ for the videos because I couldn’t have watched it otherwise.

  5. 55 pj Aug 8th, 2008 at 12:35 am

Okay, after watching Nigel tap dance, I have to give him some props. Not only does he hold his own, he’s also able to laugh at himself. Now I’m wondering if he’s been taking the heat for the other producers of AI. He’s was the most visible and therefore the one we tend to blame.

Oh, and Spense, I wanna be Twitch’s friend, too! :)

  6. 56 lilbrusc102 Aug 8th, 2008 at 12:37 am

aw, I know it probably makes me totally lame, but I can’t stop watching the “Best of SYTYCD” number! It was so exciting to see the old faces mingling with the new…it’s like a big extended family! It almost brought happy tears to my eyes, haha. I Love it!

oh, and I’d like to join the “I want to be best friends w/ Twitch” club!!! :)

  7. 57 snuffles Aug 8th, 2008 at 12:55 am

I don’t think Nigel was taking the heat for anyone. He is equally guilty for all of AI’s evils.

BUT, I DO think SYTYCD is a true labor of love for him and it shows. He’s made this show more about the love of the ART FORM of dance than the cut throat competition AI has turned into.

Plus AI/19Evil and Sony/BMG are primarily focused on creating a marketable winner that will SELL, SELL, SELL!!! So unfortunately, AI will never have that sense of celebrating all kinds of music just for the joy of music.

  8. 58 stelladallas Aug 8th, 2008 at 12:56 am

I loved the tap dancing. Tap dancing is HARD! So it was nice to see a featured tap number. I was also thrilled to see a Shane routine. His choreography always brings excitement to the show.

  9. 59 pj Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:01 am

Aww, poor Will. He really is excellent. Yes, I’m watching the delay. Damn Fox Chicago.

Looks like Mia needs to stop those tanning salon sessions. She looks RED.

  10. 60 SpenserJ Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:05 am

There is room for all who wish to join the Friends of Twitch club.

MN Sue - I toast right back at ya :)

    Sumidol, you make me giggle.

I suppose I’m going to have to start watching America’s Got Talent now, so I’ll have something to talk about with you guys. I’m not sure I can watch any more AI concert videos LOL.

Nigen can definitely be an asshat, but he sure does know his stuff when it comes to this show. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens when he leaves AI - maybe that will give us a hint as to how much of what we hated was actually his fault.

While I love watching AI, there is just so much about this show that I like better. And, I really think it must be the people. Cat seems to be about the nicest human being on the planet. And although Mary’s screams can make cats cry, she really does love dancers. You can tell she’s supportive, even when she’s giving them a poor critique. I do get mad at Nigel’s judging once in a while, but he never seems to leave that lingering negativity in the air for the whole freaking show like Simon can do.

I also love the rotating 3rd judges. They’re all so knowledgable - that even when I don’t agree with them - at least I know they deserve to be there. Personally, I don’t believe either Paula or Randy is qualified to judge a singing competition.

  11. 61 pj Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:11 am

Yeah, I really heart Cat. She’s an awesome host. I’ve heard lots of good things about how Ryan is always on his toes and runs a great show, but I don’t get the same warmth from him as I do Cat.

Don’t get my started on Randy or Pauler. Note she’s not guest judging on SYTYCD.

Honestly, AI should keep Pauler for entertainment and get rid of Randy. He’s useless. Let’s have a rotating judge instead of a mentor. Or both.

  12. 62 weelassie Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:28 am

I really am amazed that these dancers remember all of their old routines. You would think all those routines would mesh in their minds. Kudos to them for keeping them all apart and remembering all the little moves.

And, just to add-Courtney and Gev are so darn cute together.

  13. 63 primeminister Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:38 am

First off, congratulations to Joshua and Sarah for being #1!

Secondly, allow me to be my teenage self and say….Jonas Brothers FTW! lol.

  14. 64 pj Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:45 am

Aww, PM. I logged back in just to critique the Jonas Bros.

The song is catchy, but the guy with the guitar wasn’t playing it as far as I could tell. He was showing off, but not playing. The real band was waaay in the back. Then, they seemed to give another brother a guitar at the end. Gah.

They are the modern day BSB or NKOTB with fake instruments.

  15. 65 movin2thabeet Aug 8th, 2008 at 1:58 am

What a great finale although I could have done without the Jonas Brothers - the one anomaly that had nothing to do with celebrating dance (or music for that matter). Congratulations to Joshua for the win. Much deserved in my book. And I love that they also gave Katee props as well. Face it, women are disadvantaged on this show.

Speaking of, whatever became of the previous season’s winner, Sabra? I don’t think she was on the stage tonight with the “best of” and I never hear word of her. (Never did really get the excitement about her. Thought Danny was a much better dancer and entertainer).

It was great to see so many of the previous dancers on the show. Highlights for me were Travis!!!, Hok!!, Neil and I think Dominic was there.

Great to see Wade Robson’s piece, I have missed his choreography this year, and Shane Sparks. Hopefully they’ll be back next year. But there have been alot of great changes to the show - Sonja, Dave Scott, Lil C as choreographer and judge (YEA!), Tabitha/Napoleon and Dwight Rhoden/Desmond Richardson, choreographers of the Pas de Deux. Loved the broadening of styles to also include more international styles like the Bollywood dance and the Trepak. I think they had a much better mix of styles this year than any other, the choreographers to bring the artistry and dancers who were up to the challenge of dynamic execution.

This night was filled with many of my faves. I realized how much I love Mark’s dancing. It was so great to see him again, both in Bleeding Heart with Chelsie and in The Garden with Courtney. And Will and the Pas de Deux with Katee - breathless, truly. And the door routine with Twitch and Katee. And Gev and Courtney. I could go on and on.

So, I’m really looking forward to see what SYTYCD Canada will be like. It starts this fall. The previews look enticing. I live in a border town so I can watch it on TV, but hopefully MJ will find a video source and can cover it here. Crossing fingers and toes.

  16. 66 sarahjean Aug 8th, 2008 at 3:11 am

bleeding love was performed and filmed/shot so much better originally but of course it still goes down as my favorite performance that I’ve seen on So You Think You Can Dance. I love Chelsie and Mark both and really wish they would have made it into the top4. But I’m so happy for Josh I’m glad of the four remaining he’s the one that won. ah. love this show.

  17. 67 bjames Aug 8th, 2008 at 3:28 am

    best. finale. ever.

i loved that the guests were kept to a minimum and that it was all about the dancers. why couldn’t nigel do that on idol?

  18. 68 Dlynne Aug 8th, 2008 at 3:50 am

    best. finale. ever.

Yes, it really was! I was a little worried about a two-hour show but it did not disappoint.

Congrats to Joshua! I would have been happy with any of the final four winning. Heck, I would have liked any of the final six winning!

It was a great season! Thank you, MJ, for giving us a really fun place to catch up and talk about it!

  19. 69 Polaris Aug 8th, 2008 at 3:52 am

bleeding love was performed and filmed/shot so much better originally

Yeah i noticed the mistakes too. I thought chelsie was gonna fall when she kicked the suitcase :/

  20. 70 Grammie Kari Aug 8th, 2008 at 4:23 am

It was a TERRIFIC finale with a few surprises! Mary and Nigel proved they could really dance. It was great seeing some of the best from previous seasons. And this season did have a some exceptually talented dancers.

Congratulations to Joshua! My heart has softened for Katee; and I loved Twitch and Courtney showing why they were in the final four!

    Where was Sabra?

I also love the rotating 3rd judges. They’re all so knowledgable - that even when I don’t agree with them - at least I know they deserve to be there. Personally, I don’t believe either Paula or Randy is qualified to judge a singing competition.

I kept hoping Randy would ’snap out of it’ and prove he can articulate the knowledge he has obtained over the years. It just never happened. He’s useless and Paula is a mess.

Thank you MJ for providing a place for us to share our love for dance and to learn new things along the way!

  21. 71 Polaris Aug 8th, 2008 at 4:38 am

I don’t believe either Paula or Randy is qualified to judge a singing competition.

Can’t they clone Little C, teach him a thing or too about music and replace Randy with him. He is better than all 3 AI jidges (tm Cat :P) combined.

    Where was Sabra?

Nick the winner of season one was also missing, though he was in the openning of IGB.

  22. 72 Bobbi Aug 8th, 2008 at 6:23 am

What a fantastic finale! I loved the concentration being on the dancers, which was precisely where it should have been. Loved the reprisals of favorite routines from the season, although I was really hoping they were going to do “The Bed”. It was great that Mary and Nigel got to show off for a bit and I think they both did admirably well.

Congratulations to Josh! I thought he was going to take it, but I would have been just as happy if Twitch had won. My only criticism of the show (well, other than the inclusion of the Jonas Brothers who had nothing to do with anything) is that Twitch didn’t get a chance to speak and we didn’t have the opportunity to see a review of his journey on SYTYCD. Glad Katee got the $50,000. All in all, it was definitely a feel good night. Courtney touched me so much. I’m so glad she made the top 4.

Congratulations to Sarah! I placed 12th in mj’s pool and 1st in Rickey’s! LOL! When I couldn’t make up my mind between my choices, I’d make different choices on each of the pools. Obviously I put the better guesses on Rickey’s pool. The games made it even more fun watching the show. Thank you, mj, for running it.

More importantly, mj, thanks for covering this show this summer. It is definitely a favorite and your coverage of it has supplemented my enjoyment of it immensely. This show just seems to end too soon!

  23. 73 dancin Aug 8th, 2008 at 7:07 am

    what an awesome finale :)
    congrats to joshua weeeeeeeee :)
and i’m so glad katee got something.. but i’ve always thought.. the top 4 should get somethin… but then they will make more money this year than i will so i not too upset lol

ty so much for the coverage mj
now i can’t wait for so you think you can dance CANADA weeeeeeee the ads look freakin awesome for it

  24. 74 MrsTrep Aug 8th, 2008 at 7:40 am

Every time I hear the Chris Brown song with “Dance Forever” (I can’t remember the name of it (one night?) and it was on the show last night)I think of SYTYCD and they play it ALL the time on my radio station. That was a fun routine, not my favorite, but it was one of the few with a song I’d hear on the radio around here other than No Air.

  25. 75 VlnGirl Aug 8th, 2008 at 8:14 am

I’ve been lurking all season. :) A big congrats to all the dancers! And a HUGE thanks to MJ!

  26. 76 KrazeeK120 Aug 8th, 2008 at 8:36 am

I LOVED seeing the judges’ favorites again! All of the dances were great! And I was so glad that my 2 personal favorites (the Mark/Chelsie hip hop and the Mark/Courtney jazz) were chosen!

I thought Mary/Dmitry dancing together was creepy. Sorry. And I really could have done without Nigel. Oh, well.

Anyone else think it was shady of them to give Katee a prize and not Twitch? I think he deserves SOMETHING for being runner-up!

And congratulations to Joshua for his win!!!

  27. 77 bc4me Aug 8th, 2008 at 9:01 am

“bleeding love was performed and filmed/shot so much better originally but of course it still goes down as my favorite performance that I’ve seen on So You Think You Can Dance.”

I so agree. It just blew me away both times. I absolutely love Mark. I hope I get to see him in the future.

  28. 78 mrsbjh Aug 8th, 2008 at 9:01 am

Except for the Jonas Brothers, that show was perfect! So enjoyable and so entertaining!! I would have been happy with Twitch winning, but I think “America got it right” by choosing Joshua. Thanks, MJ, for covering SYTYCD. I love it!!

  29. 79 idolbeat Aug 8th, 2008 at 9:46 am

This has been such a fun season! I have loved posting on here with all of you!

Although I would have loved Twitch to win, I honestly would have been happy with most of the top 10 winning. They all had different talents and proved it in their pairing. Josh, danced beautifully; No Air and Trepak were my favorites, with Bollywood following closely. He showed athleticism, grace, technique and emotion and with Katee, they had the best combined skills as a partnership.

I wish The Bed dance would have been chosen last night instead of the Twitch/Comfort dance. It was a good dance but the Bed was much more intense and memorable.

I am going to Pensacola to see SYTYCD on tour! My first time going to see the tour and I am pretty excited. Anyone else going to see them on tour?

  30. 80 SpenserJ Aug 8th, 2008 at 9:47 am

Don’t get my started on Randy or Pauler. Note she’s not guest judging on SYTYCD.

The funny thing about that is that Paula would actually be qualified to judge this show - as opposed to AI. Still, I wouldn’t want her incoherent babbling on this show either.

Funny - I was watching the Jonas Bros. and also thinking - hey, it’s like new kids on the block with fake guitars. I think that’s why they almost endeared themselves to me.

  31. 81 MrsTrep Aug 8th, 2008 at 9:54 am

Ok, so that song is on again…. it’s been like two hours….

  32. 82 Allison Aug 8th, 2008 at 10:25 am

that finale was entertaining! I really didn’t care who won.
What’s with Sabra? She was conspicuously absent.

  33. 83 AInoob Aug 8th, 2008 at 11:18 am

In the The Best of So You Think You Can Dance routine, was everyone in this season’s top 10 there? They were moving so fast I couldn’t track all S4’s dancers (they’re the only ones I know so that’s why I was looking for them, lol) and I did manage to catch sight of a few of them (though the only one in the top 4 I spotted was Katee).

  34. 84 Joanna Aug 8th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Not that it’s science, but Dialidol had Josh and Twitch fairly close (13.1 to 10.52 respectively), but there was a huge gap for Katee in 3rd (4.49) and then poor, underrated Courtney with 0.

Also, If Katee came in 3rd and got 50K, and Twitch came in 2nd but got nothing, that sucks pretty big. I certainly hope that’s not the case.

  35. 85 idolwatcher Aug 8th, 2008 at 12:09 pm

I’ve watched this show from the very beginning and I think this was my favorite season of all. I would have been happy with any of the top 4 but was secretly pulling for Joshua. I absolutely love Cat! If anyone remembers the first season they had another host and it was pretty bad. I even like the judges (unlike two of the three in Idol). I’ve gotten used to Mary’s scream and actually look forward to it. The rotating judge position brings in a new perspective even though there’s a couple of judges I would prefer not to see again. Mary and Nigel (to me, at least) offer up good critiques of the dancers.

Most of all this show has given me an appreciation of all forms of dance and has shown me the connection between the dance and emotions. As much as I like and watch Idol I don’t get the same feeling when I watch it.

  36. 86 AZIdolFan Aug 8th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

MY GUY WON!!!!! AGAIN!!!!! I’m on a roll, 1st DC, then Joshua. Now if only i can pick the winner for project runway!

i loved the finale yesterday. it was fun watching it with my son & sister. My sister had never heard of the Jonas Brothers and said that Hanson were better. LOL

  37. 87 dbt Aug 8th, 2008 at 3:43 pm

Thanks for covering SYTYCD MJ! It’s been a blast.

I love AI, but I think I actually like this show better. More focus on the dancers performing well, and not just about who’s marketable. The ‘jidges’ comments can actually be constructive, and Cat is awesome. And I’m also impressed with the skill of these dancers…and think their craft requires so much more work than some other talents. All in all .. it’s been great fun and I’m sad that it’s ending.

Loved the finale!! WOW. Was thrilled to see some of the best dances again … esp Bleeding Love with Mark/Chelsie. Made me realize all over again why I LOVE Mark. He’s an amazing dancer AND performer. I hope I see him again, somewhere.

Loved that Nigel and Mary got on the dance floor. Good sports!

Mary is an acquired taste, but I have grown to like her and her screams. I love her enthusiasm and can tell she’s really pulling for these kids.

It was a lot of fun seeing and hearing from dancers from previous seasons. Since the SYTYCD winner only wins $$$$, I’ve always wondered what they would do after the show.

All in all … a super finale. Lots of incredible talent, great show … and lots of fun having a place to discuss with my online friends.

  38. 88 SpenserJ Aug 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

Also, If Katee came in 3rd and got 50K, and Twitch came in 2nd but got nothing, that sucks pretty big. I certainly hope that’s not the case.

I believe that is the case, and I agree it does kind of give Twitch the shaft. But, the one thing all of the top ten will get, that they’ve probably never had before, is a steady weekly paycheck while on the tour. That’s huge for a dancer and an opportunity that comes very few and far between.

Which reminds me that I was so happy to see that Sara from last season had landed a spot on Avril’s tour, and that she got to do some backup vocals. That must have been fabulous, and I do adore her. The more long-term contract gigs you can get like that definitely prolongs your career as a dancer.

My sister had never heard of the Jonas Brothers and said that Hanson were better. LOL

I’m going to have to agree with your sister. I’m pretty sure all three of the Hanson boys can actually carry a tune, and they all play real instruments.

  39. 89 pj Aug 8th, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Funny - I was watching the Jonas Bros. and also thinking - hey, it’s like new kids on the block with fake guitars. I think that’s why they almost endeared themselves to me.

I can’t admit to ever having any love for NKOTB, but I did heart me some Duran Duran back in the day! :-)

  40. 90 Sarah Aug 8th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Congratulations to Sarah! I placed 12th in mj’s pool and 1st in Rickey’s! LOL! When I couldn’t make up my mind between my choices, I’d make different choices on each of the pools. Obviously I put the better guesses on Rickey’s pool.

Thanks!!! Congrats to you too! I wondered if that was you in Rickey’s pool! The opposite was true for me. I was pretty sure that Josh would win, so I put my points on him at the beginning in MJ’s pool, but I wanted to do a different overall pick in Rickey’s pool, so I picked Chelsie. I changed to Joshua right before the show aired last night, so I did get 8 points for that, but I still placed like 18th lol. But I always made the same weekly choices on both pools. A couple weeks I got totally screwed, but for the most part I got most of the elimination points and I rarely missed a bonus question (whereas you almost couldn’t PAY me to get one right in the AI pool LOL). But some of these were ridiculously easy - like “will a male or female dancer be eliminated first?” Anyone who’s watched the show knows that the female dancer is always the first eliminated. lol.

I found this article on the finale and I read the part that says Joshua never danced with Debbie Allen, someone was trying to convince us he had so I just thought I would post this because I swear I never heard him say that and it is a nice little article.

If those links work, they are interviews with Joshua and Twitch — they both talk about exactly what training they had. Thought it was interesting.

Oh, and my nine year old daughter thought the Jonas Brothers were the highlight of the whole finale. She also loves Radio Disney, though.

All I ask of Nigel is to be more truthful about the experience of the dancers. We can handle the truth! The manipulation isn’t needed to make this a terrific show.

that finale was entertaining! I really didn’t care who won.
What’s with Sabra? She was conspicuously absent.

Since they were bringing back our favorites, you would think someone would at least mention her name. I found that quite odd.

To make it a better show next year, I wish their guest(s) would be a dancer or singer/dancer. Then again, maybe they wanted those 8-14 year-olds tuning in?

Now what do we watch? ;o)
