Stand Up to Cancer – VIDEO – Carrie Underwood

ETA: David Cook blogged about the event:

I just wanted to blog real quick and say how deeply moved I was by the show tonight. Kudos to everyone who put it on, and let’s do what we can to make sure that it’s not just about tonight, but everyday.

Thank you to everyone who donated, and I have to give kudos to David Archuleta’s Angels for their Crush Kids’ Cancer Team. They set a goal of $25,000, and exceeded it, raising $31,215.80, according to standup2cancer.org. WAY TO GO!!!

I also have to mention (proud parent of sorts), that “The Cookie Jar,” Cpt. Bridget Browne, standing with David Cook, also exceeded their goal.

Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for all the support you’ve shown with this. It means the world to me and I’m glad to see everyone rally up.

Good work, Angels and Word Nerds!

Carrie Underwood and a slew of other female music superstars performed the charity single “Just Stand Up!” on tonight’s Stand Up to Cancer telethon from Radio City Music Hall where they are rehearsing for this week’s “Fashion Rocks” TV special. Check it out below:

If you’d like to donate to Stand Up to Cancer you can do it HERE.

David Cook did not appear during the telethon. I imagine his pre-recorded video was cut for time.

Just wanted to point out also that David Archuletaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fan team came in 2nd place in the team contest raising over $30,000 through 547 individual contributors. The top 5 teams were recognized on the show (on the scrolling banner at the bottom).

They are listed here as well.

Fortuitously, it actually scrolls during the vid posted above.

More good new on this, Cook fans raised funds in several different groups rather than in one piece, so I am unsure what their total was, but it was in the thousands. They have also raised over $27k in a separate effort going to the Cancer Society rather than this effort. Great contribution from Idol fans all around.

  • FolkFan:

Sweet blog from DC. Thanks for posting.

  • pj:

Aww, I missed the show. Thanks for the video MJ. Beyonce’s hair looks Dionne Warwick circa the Star Search era. Was Dionne before or after Andy Gibb? I remember seeing “John Cougar” on that show. God, I’m old.

The group singout sucked, especially Miley. Not sure that it matters. I hope they raise a lot of cash for an excellent cause.

  • spritely:

That was thoughtful of DC to post that blog. What a sweetie.

Congrats to both the Angels and the Cookies for raising all that $$!

  • J:

You think I would have watched this since I’m a survivor, but we weren’t home earlier. ( we do relay for cancer)

So thanks for having the clip on here MJ. I think that Carrie was the prettiest and best voice of the bunch (and I didn’t care for her on idol)…..I never realized she was so short.

    Too bad about David. :thumbdown_tb:

  • sabby_rina:

Wow that’s great news about Team Crush! I’m so glad I was able to contribute to that team. :)

I don’t know why… but it completely boggles my mind seeing Mariah Carey sharing the same stage as Leona Lewis…

  • cruzceleste:

And, they got my money. I actually called instead of my usual giving online because I wanted to talk to Rob Lowe LOL.

:wub_tb:Rob Lowe is cute… to bad you couldn ´t speak to him

  • waffle:

It’s also nice to see Leona Lewis holding her own with these girls. After all, she’s still relatively new at this, as well.

Oh and David C posting that blog was just brilliant. He probably knows that his fans were pretty disappointed in not seeing him on the show, after all the hype in him (and the other idols) making an appearance. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s the cause that’s important. And David’s acknowledgement of all those responsible in putting the show together, and his and Archie’s fans who supported the cause, was a really smart way to deflect any negative feelings his non-appearance may have brought to those who were patiently waiting to see him.

What else can I say, David’s a really special breed of individual. His sense of responsibility and humility, among his other great qualities, just make me proud to be his fan. : )

  • GEEK4VOCAB:

Congratulations to The Archies and the Word Nerds for their donation efforts. I wish I would have known about Cookie’s team… but there are at least five different cancer charities in his name that I know of right now. Hard to keep track of them all!!! :)

But I do intend to give more to “The Cookie Jar” when Stand Up’s team donation becomes available on September 8th.

The program was worth watching just for the messages it sent. I kinda choked with tears over hearing about the 4 year-old dying. We all need to remind those we love to get the tests that ARE available! I just had the NEW digital Mammogram and it isn’t as uncomfortable as the old one!

Sheryl Crow and James Taylor together? Wonderful, abasolutely wonderful!! Josh Grobin has a golden voice. Melissa did just fine.

Great news about Archie and his Angels. It is good that David Cook left such a touching message for us.

  • Duke:

i DO NOT think Miley has a terrible voice. I mean, i never really took the time to listen to her before and just assumed she was all digitalized and stuff…but i took the time to listen to her the other day and thought she had a really good voice. I think in this vid, she was just kinda goofing and trying to sound like rhianna. i thought she was good.

having said that, im amazed they all these famous chicks got together on the same stage. remarkable.

  • Hazehel:

The only way you can tell whether someone has a good voice is to hear them live (and not when they are lip-syncing which is what Miley Cyrus does a lot). She sounds coarse when she sings live, like here. She can’t compare to all the other singers there, is worst singer of the bunch and I doubt she will even get into top 12 of AI.

  • cheese:

I think David’s blog was very sweet, and also a very polite, diplomatic way to tell his fans not to whine about, er, I mean, be disappointed that he wasn’t on the telecast.

LOL at Mariah’s bedazzled microphone. She must carry one in her purse.

Miley sucks, but I give her props for at least sucking in her very own distinctive, recognizable way and not sounding like any sucky teenaged girl singer that came before her.

And, like bax, I was a bit creeped out by Fergie’s sexy cancer dance. Ew.

  • Sarah:

Well, it is too bad DC and the idols got cut, but that’s small in the scheme of things, as David makes clear with his nice blog. I found the program to be a good balance of information and emotion. And the doctors and philanthropists had their own star power, too! Melissa E. was awesome. She gave me chills. James Taylor and Sheryl Crow were fantastic; they worked together beautifully. They are such class acts. And how about violinst Joshua Bell! Anyway, I thought it was pretty well put together, even with a few messy live-tv moments thrown into the mix. Re: Miley, her continues to escape me. And yeah, Beyonce looked more than a bit matronly. Where did her divaliciousness go? And, yay Leona. She grows on me every day.

  • elle:

Cool Cool! David Cook is a sweetie. And way to go ArchAngels! He was so touched by the donations in his name. Loved this whole thing. LOL on everyone’s comments about the girls singing!!

AND don’t give me flack, but for me, “Imagine” belongs to only one person this season, and it’s not Josh Groban . . . . I wonder if he knew he was going to be compared and that in the mind of Archies everywhere he would come up short!
    :innocent1_tb:

  • gerreb:

I am a nurse and about 75% of my patients have cancer so this whole thing really touches me. This is a great cause.
Side note: Miley sounds terrible in that song. She should’ve been left out. Other than that, I think the song is great!

  • hoodathunk:

Mary J. Blige owned them all in the group song.

  • Grammie Kari:

So, where is the best place to send my donation? Is the Cookie Jar still accepting donations? A link? Thanks!

  • grrrr:

Also, was it just me or did Miley sound like ass???

You say ass, I say bastard lovechild of Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

LOL, baxter that was Natasha Bedingfield.

Ahh, I didn’t figure that one out until this morning. I was there (up in the balcony) and I still haven’t placed some of the people I saw. I’ll have to find a torrent somewhere so I can rewatch. (It took my friend and I forever to place Scarlett Johansen and Josh Brolin, who were super chummy, btw.)

Do not love Beyonceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hair though. Eek.

    Very 80s Blanche Deveraux- ick!

They had time to show Homer Simpson getting a colonoscopy (Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m still not sure whether that was meant to be funny or not) but no time for David?

That got some big laughs, not as huge as Jack Black did, though.

I found the program to be a good balance of information and emotion

*nods emphatically* I kinda wish it had run for 90 min.so they could fit more things in, but “well-balanced” is a totally apt description….from funny to heart-wrenching to uplifting and hopeful (like the story of the aerobics instructor whose cancer has vanished). And even though I’m still sort of burned out on science since college, I found all the geeky bits about nanotechnology and the genetic research extremely fascinating.

So, where is the best place to send my donation? Is the Cookie Jar still accepting donations? A link? Thanks!

You can donate directly here or here is the address on the donation envelopes they gave us:
Stand Up To Cancer, File 1224
    1801 W. Olympic Boulevard
    Pasadena, California 91199-1224
There is a lot of interesting information on the donation envelope itself regarding donations like:
-Your donation to Stand Up To Cancer is tax-deductible.
-Monies raised will be administered through the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
-A scientific advisory board, comprised of the most brilliant minds in cancer research today, will determine which projects get funded.
-Minimum funding commitment is three years.
-Projects targeted will be those with the greatest promise of getting new therapies to patients quickly.
-Research will be transparent; findings must be shared at six-month intervals not only with the Advisory board but with the public, so all donors are assured that the funds are being used carefully and wisely to make substantital progress in the fight against cancer.
