ETA: David Cook blogged about the event:
I just wanted to blog real quick and say how deeply moved I was by the show tonight. Kudos to everyone who put it on, and let’s do what we can to make sure that it’s not just about tonight, but everyday.
Thank you to everyone who donated, and I have to give kudos to David Archuleta’s Angels for their Crush Kids’ Cancer Team. They set a goal of $25,000, and exceeded it, raising $31,215.80, according to standup2cancer.org. WAY TO GO!!!
I also have to mention (proud parent of sorts), that “The Cookie Jar,” Cpt. Bridget Browne, standing with David Cook, also exceeded their goal.
Thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for all the support you’ve shown with this. It means the world to me and I’m glad to see everyone rally up.
Good work, Angels and Word Nerds!
Carrie Underwood and a slew of other female music superstars performed the charity single “Just Stand Up!” on tonight’s Stand Up to Cancer telethon from Radio City Music Hall where they are rehearsing for this week’s “Fashion Rocks” TV special. Check it out below:
If you’d like to donate to Stand Up to Cancer you can do it HERE.
David Cook did not appear during the telethon. I imagine his pre-recorded video was cut for time.

Can someone tell me who the blond on the end was that didn’t get the memo about “black pants required”??
Also, was it just me or did Miley sound like ass???
and Fergie….please don’t sex up a song for cancer…geesh!!
It’s a great cause….please give!!!
Wasnt that Natasha in the white pants?
Oh yeah, total ass… LOL. She’s a horrible singer.
LOL, baxter that was Natasha Bedingfield.
I know Mariah was on Carrie’s left, but who was on the other side of her?
And why did everyone stand up when Fergie began singing?
I don’t like Miley, I don’t get why young people like her. David C was cut from the show, I guess I can go to the movies now. I know it is a good cause but I can give without watching.
I know it’s in bad taste to criticize this, but why promote Cook being on it in every print ad, on their site, and in numerous media spots, only to cut him? He and the Idols were in a pretaped segment and could have been slotted in with a little better planning. But I donated anyway…
Who was the woman who sang with Josh Groban?
Yeah, there were at least 2, maybe 3, girls in the song that I did not recognize. The ones I DID were Beyonce, Carrie, MJB, Rihanna, Fergie, Natasha, Leona, Mariah, Miley, and Nicole from PCD.
I actually watched this show in its’ entirety, and I loved the Sheryl Crow and James Taylor duet. But I love them both, so I may be a tad bit biased. :)
Do not love Beyonce’s hair though. Eek.
And how did Miley and Nicole in particular make this “line up” over someone like Alicia Keys?? Sorry. Not really “getting” that.
Carrie Underwood was adorable (and short)! Ugh, Miley! I think Rihanna could totally take her and hip-check her off the stage. (What? Who said that?)
Yep, I openly sobbed from the comfort of my livingroom.
They had time to show Homer Simpson getting a colonoscopy (I’m still not sure whether that was meant to be funny or not) but no time for David?
I gave a donation anyways because it’s a great cause but c’mon seriously?
Well, Miley looked happy to be there. I’ll give her that.
Pity that they cut DC and the other AI7 Idols. I’m sure that it would have meant a lot to DC and the others to be involved in this….
I am now so glad I didn’t watch this. I already donate to cancer causes and don’t need a tv show to tell me to. I wanted to watch for Cook but got home from work late so figured I missed him…I wanted to see Melissa Etheridge… she wasn’t on the stage on that video.
I thought it looked like that thought crossed Rihanna’s mind when Miley whined out her “whatevah”.
gingerly, Melissa Etheridge was on at the very end, leading the final song, with what seemed like all the people who were there speaking. I know Sugarland performed with her; I’m not sure who else, all I know is that 3rd female singing with Jennifer Nettles from Sugarland and Melissa sounded like ass.
Those sneaky tv devils. They sure lured a lot of us to watch. :) David can feel good about how much he helped–truly–with promoting the show.
David Cook is a budding celebrity but still ways out of league of the bigger stars on the show. It’s not unexpected to see him and other Idols’ segment on the chopping blocks if time was an issue.
Just wanted to point out also that David Archuleta’s fan team came in 2nd place in the team contest raising over $30,000 through 547 individual contributors. The top 5 teams were recognized on the show (on the scrolling banner at the bottom).
They are listed here as well.

That’s fantastic, kudos to those that donated to Archie’s team. I didn’t even know they had teams organized for this until I saw that clip the other day of fans presenting Archie with the document showing the amount they raised in his honor.
“David Cook is a budding celebrity but still ways out of league of the bigger stars on the show.”
At least he can SING, for God’s sake. He’s a ROCK STAH, come on! (SMILEY FACE) And he can speak intelligently, unlike animated morons. So anyway…couldn’t they have cut Miley F-ing Cyrus “singing?!!” Is that you call it? I have to say I MUTED the TV during the TCA for everything but Cook and Archie pretty much. So, I had never heard this Miley critter sing! OMG. Again. Couldn’t we have had 30 seconds of David Cook speaking instead of THAT incredible CRAP? Oh sorry, was I writing out loud? Or instead of animated idiocy with the Simpsons? I am SO tired of them. Or that horrible prostate exam sketch? Whew. Well, I did like Melissa (I know, not everyone did) and Jennifer Nettles. And does Fergie always sound like that? I hope not. But she can do those hands-free cartwheel things while singing, so there ya go. Dammit I missed seeing Cook! Had to come watch some vids on my own. So there. I will donate, after all.
Thanks :) So she was on with everybody else? I’m not sure what that meant. Was she standing in a crowd? Did she sing? Did she say anything?
gingerly, at the very end of the show, Melissa Etheridge was on stage (in the LA studio) and sang a song with Sugarland’s Jennifer Nettles, some other chick who I don’t know, and all the celebs who were present in LA were on stage with them singing along.
Basically, she led the last song (singing and on guitar). Traded off a couple of times with Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland. Kristian Bush of Sugarland played mandolin. A few other people also sang lines in the song, and then the various celebrities were kind of singing in a chorus behind them, thankfully not too near a microphone.
She was on with everyone else, but she was singing and playing guitar. Basically “leading” the song, but there were really only 5 people singing into mics. Everyone else was behind them, “dancing” (read: stepping from side to side lol) and singing, but without mics. Don’t worry, she sounded GREAT, and she and Jennifer Nettles sounded really good together.
I *think* I remember that she also did a “speaking role” spot with Christina Applegate and Sheryl Crow at one other part of the program.
Yes, she did. I believe they were talking about sticking together, helping each other through the fight and whatnot.
Alas, Miley is not a good singer, but she is a billion dollar industry unto herself. Telethons like these will go for the biggest guns they can get, the people that they believe will bring in viewers and dollars. I don’t think it matters if they’re actually talented :)
Okay, I actually thought Melissa sounded kind of a good.
Not only was Beyonce’s hair awful, but those jeans made her ass look HUGE. Bad choice.
That’s awesome. Nice way to mobilize a fanbase for good
All in all, I thought it was a good show for a great cause. And, they got my money. I actually called instead of my usual giving online because I wanted to talk to Rob Lowe LOL. But alas, no, I just got a regular operator. I wanted to ask Rob if he ever watches the Outsiders, because I know I still do! Sorry, middle school crushes die hard.
Sarah, thanks!!! She redeems the night for me. Looking back, she wouldn’t have been done justice with the “girls.” She’s not a pretty face, she’s actually not a pretty voice. she’s just freaking amazing! (sorta how I feel about DC…)
Fortuitously, it actually scrolls during the vid posted above.
David Cook just posted a new blog about the show.

More good new on this, Cook fans raised funds in several different groups rather than in one piece, so I am unsure what their total was, but it was in the thousands. They have also raised over $27k in a separate effort going to the Cancer Society rather than this effort. Great contribution from Idol fans all around.
Sweet blog from DC. Thanks for posting.
Aww, I missed the show. Thanks for the video MJ. Beyonce’s hair looks Dionne Warwick circa the Star Search era. Was Dionne before or after Andy Gibb? I remember seeing “John Cougar” on that show. God, I’m old.
The group singout sucked, especially Miley. Not sure that it matters. I hope they raise a lot of cash for an excellent cause.
That was thoughtful of DC to post that blog. What a sweetie.
Congrats to both the Angels and the Cookies for raising all that $$!
You think I would have watched this since I’m a survivor, but we weren’t home earlier. ( we do relay for cancer)
So thanks for having the clip on here MJ. I think that Carrie was the prettiest and best voice of the bunch (and I didn’t care for her on idol)…..I never realized she was so short.
Too bad about David.
Wow that’s great news about Team Crush! I’m so glad I was able to contribute to that team. :)
I don’t know why… but it completely boggles my mind seeing Mariah Carey sharing the same stage as Leona Lewis…
:wub_tb:Rob Lowe is cute… to bad you couldn´t speak to him
It’s also nice to see Leona Lewis holding her own with these girls. After all, she’s still relatively new at this, as well.
Oh and David C posting that blog was just brilliant. He probably knows that his fans were pretty disappointed in not seeing him on the show, after all the hype in him (and the other idols) making an appearance. But in the grand scheme of things, it’s the cause that’s important. And David’s acknowledgement of all those responsible in putting the show together, and his and Archie’s fans who supported the cause, was a really smart way to deflect any negative feelings his non-appearance may have brought to those who were patiently waiting to see him.
What else can I say, David’s a really special breed of individual. His sense of responsibility and humility, among his other great qualities, just make me proud to be his fan. : )
Congratulations to The Archies and the Word Nerds for their donation efforts. I wish I would have known about Cookie’s team… but there are at least five different cancer charities in his name that I know of right now. Hard to keep track of them all!!! :)
But I do intend to give more to “The Cookie Jar” when Stand Up’s team donation becomes available on September 8th.
The program was worth watching just for the messages it sent. I kinda choked with tears over hearing about the 4 year-old dying. We all need to remind those we love to get the tests that ARE available! I just had the NEW digital Mammogram and it isn’t as uncomfortable as the old one!
Sheryl Crow and James Taylor together? Wonderful, abasolutely wonderful!! Josh Grobin has a golden voice. Melissa did just fine.
Great news about Archie and his Angels. It is good that David Cook left such a touching message for us.
i DO NOT think Miley has a terrible voice. I mean, i never really took the time to listen to her before and just assumed she was all digitalized and stuff…but i took the time to listen to her the other day and thought she had a really good voice. I think in this vid, she was just kinda goofing and trying to sound like rhianna. i thought she was good.
having said that, im amazed they all these famous chicks got together on the same stage. remarkable.
The only way you can tell whether someone has a good voice is to hear them live (and not when they are lip-syncing which is what Miley Cyrus does a lot). She sounds coarse when she sings live, like here. She can’t compare to all the other singers there, is worst singer of the bunch and I doubt she will even get into top 12 of AI.
I think David’s blog was very sweet, and also a very polite, diplomatic way to tell his fans not to whine about, er, I mean, be disappointed that he wasn’t on the telecast.
LOL at Mariah’s bedazzled microphone. She must carry one in her purse.
Miley sucks, but I give her props for at least sucking in her very own distinctive, recognizable way and not sounding like any sucky teenaged girl singer that came before her.
And, like bax, I was a bit creeped out by Fergie’s sexy cancer dance. Ew.
Well, it is too bad DC and the idols got cut, but that’s small in the scheme of things, as David makes clear with his nice blog. I found the program to be a good balance of information and emotion. And the doctors and philanthropists had their own star power, too! Melissa E. was awesome. She gave me chills. James Taylor and Sheryl Crow were fantastic; they worked together beautifully. They are such class acts. And how about violinst Joshua Bell! Anyway, I thought it was pretty well put together, even with a few messy live-tv moments thrown into the mix. Re: Miley, her continues to escape me. And yeah, Beyonce looked more than a bit matronly. Where did her divaliciousness go? And, yay Leona. She grows on me every day.
Cool Cool! David Cook is a sweetie. And way to go ArchAngels! He was so touched by the donations in his name. Loved this whole thing. LOL on everyone’s comments about the girls singing!!
AND don’t give me flack, but for me, “Imagine” belongs to only one person this season, and it’s not Josh Groban . . . . I wonder if he knew he was going to be compared and that in the mind of Archies everywhere he would come up short!

I am a nurse and about 75% of my patients have cancer so this whole thing really touches me. This is a great cause.
Side note: Miley sounds terrible in that song. She should’ve been left out. Other than that, I think the song is great!
Mary J. Blige owned them all in the group song.
So, where is the best place to send my donation? Is the Cookie Jar still accepting donations? A link? Thanks!
You say ass, I say bastard lovechild of Mickey and Minnie Mouse.
Ahh, I didn’t figure that one out until this morning. I was there (up in the balcony) and I still haven’t placed some of the people I saw. I’ll have to find a torrent somewhere so I can rewatch. (It took my friend and I forever to place Scarlett Johansen and Josh Brolin, who were super chummy, btw.)
Very 80s Blanche Deveraux- ick!
That got some big laughs, not as huge as Jack Black did, though.
*nods emphatically* I kinda wish it had run for 90 min.so they could fit more things in, but “well-balanced” is a totally apt description….from funny to heart-wrenching to uplifting and hopeful (like the story of the aerobics instructor whose cancer has vanished). And even though I’m still sort of burned out on science since college, I found all the geeky bits about nanotechnology and the genetic research extremely fascinating.
