Det AI Fan's Detroit MI Recap

Mandisa didn't sing tonight due to illness. She was not seen onstage.

So it was up to Ace to start the show with "Father Figure" He was at his cheesy best tonight- down to the drawn out removal of the jacket and making his hands mimic a heartbeat to the bass line. His "Harder to Breathe' was really good. It seems to me that the Idols must have discussed backstage or on the bus that Detroit is known as "Detroit Rock City" because he is the first, but not the last, to mention it.

Lisa- The surprise of the night- everybody I went with was really impressed with her performance. She sounded gorgeous!

Paris- What was weird about Paris was that she went down into the audience and was shaking fans' hands during Midnight Train to Georgia and I really didn't feel the emotion of the song. Crazy in Love was just plain crazy. Lots of booty shaking and arm waving and gyrating, but not a lot of actual singing.

Bucky- Aaah Bucky. Our marble mouthed friend came out doing the Bucky Shuffle and sang Superstition. He too mentioned Detroit Rock City, and mentioned that Kid Rock was from Detroit. He then sang Drift Away, although you couldn't really hear him very well Then it was on to the duet with Kellie, which featured the only crotch bump of the night, which looked as if it took Kellie by surprise (That sneaky Bucky). Kellie and Bucky were very playful with each other and the song was pretty cute.

Kellie- She made me nervous wearing this skin tight red corset. I was so nervous that there was going to be a wardrobe malfunction that I really didn't pay much attention to her singing. She did mention that Detroit was the loudest crowd they've seen so far.

Intermission was too long.

Chris- The stadium went dark and the crowd could feel the excitement. DAUGHTRY came out to rock! Whole Lotta Love was awesome and he got the crowd singing along on Wanted Dead or Alive. He said that he's been working on his album and he hopes that every single person in the audience is there when he comes back on his own. He also mentioned that Detroit is Detroit Rock City AND we're the loudest crowd so far on the tour. Renegade was great and then the moment that I have been waiting for. Savin' Me was the BEST song of the night. Elliott and Chris sound so great together.

Elliott- I am a big E fan, so this may be biased but he was awesome. I don't think a lot of people in the audience were familiar with Never Too Much, but he sounded great and boogied back and forth across the stage. Before MMFL, he asked the customary "Where My Ladies at?" and made a mock surprise face that was so cute when all the ladies screamed in response. What I love about the way he sings MMFL is that he tries to change it up, adding little runs, and it never sounds the same way twice. Then he went on to Trouble and got all growly and hot. I agree with other recappers that it is way too short. I can't wait for his cd to come out!

Patience- The boys sounded great. I love the harmony! Joe Louis Arena was aglow with cell phones, and I really hoped one of them would dance like Axl Rose, to no avail.

Katharine- The black dress must go! It doesn't fit with the rest of the Idols and it doesn't fit with BHACT. She was another one smiling and waving through the whole song, and the meaning of the song got totally lost. She was moving quite well on stage, but her vocals were kind of weak on BHACT and she didn't get much response from the audience. After the song, she mentioned that this was her favorite part of the day because it's the only time she can talk due to doctor's orders. Then she showed her cast and said she was accident prone. She seems very unsure of herself when talking on stage. Then she did SOTR and while the crowd stayed in their seats, many, many people stood up and applauded after the song was finished. It was very good.

Taylor- He came in through the audience on Jailhouse Rock, and the crowd went wild. He called us the Motor City, and then mentioned that his next song was from a Detroiter Bob Seger. (There are few people more loved in Detroit by the way) I really loved his version of Hollywood Nights. Then he did Living For the City. He then said he was going to dedicate his next song to the city of Detroit and that he's never done that before. He also said that it was for the troops overseas. Yes- it was Do I Make You Proud. He was really out of breath at the beginning, but pulled it out at the end. Then he left the stage, and we all knew that the concert wasn't over. A couple of minutes later, the magic door opened and Taylor returned to do TI2TS. He went all crazy dancing at the end of the song and broke out the harmonica which sent the audience into hysterics. I liked Taylor better than I thought I would- he truly is a great performer!

Group Numbers- I love these Idols, but chuckle that a whole PopTarts video was dedicated to learning all of the difficult choreography, when all it is is walking back and forth and swinging your arms meaningfully. Living in America was much more enjoyable, although I could only understand Elliott (who was quite the dancing machine on this tune, if I do say so myself). Of course there was the chanting of Detroit City at the end of the song. All in all a great end to a great night.

Here are the stats:
