JJ's Bridgeport CT Idols Recap

I’ve been reading recaps for almost 3 months and now I finally get to do my own.  YEAH!!!

First, I didn’t get to go wait by the buses.  I didn’t get into the M&G’s.  I didn’t get to see LiMBO (I was hoping my kids would grow 3 feet by Saturday so I could sneak them in, but there is only so much milk and yogurt they can eat!)  I didn’t get to personally meet any of them.  I was a little disappointed that Taylor didn’t notice me in the nosebleed seats, even with the “Hot has Soul Patrol pasties” poster.  However, it was still worth the bucks!

I went to the show with my three kids.  All of them decided to make posters.  My oldest decided to do a poster that said “I Love Kat and Kellie”  I distinctly remember giving birth to her, but now I’m starting to think that it was a bad dream because there is no way she could be my daughter!! (Just kidding!)  However, the twins both did posters that said, “Go Taylor!!   Woo Hoo!!!”  There is hope for them yet.  I also went with my friend (diehard Chris fan, believe it or not) and her daughter.  Who, like most 8 year old girls, had to do a Kat and Kellie poster because that is what Melissa did.

I’m not going to go over the songs because everyone knows them by heart by now.  I’m just going to give my take on the whole show.

First, the concert started ½ hour late and there was a ½ hour intermission.  Keep this I mind when you know that my kids are 8, 6 and 6.  Second, overall, I thought their stage prescense was greatly improved.

Mandisa: She is proof that beauty has nothing to do with size.  All that, and she sure can blow!  She did dedicate a song to Ruben and said that he called her.

Grade:  B+

Ace: It’s a good thing he was blessed with good looks and a charming personality.  Enough said on that.  He did this funky thing with his chest.  He kind of flexed it.  The only way I can truly describe it is that it reminded me of the scene in Alien where the Alien breaks out of John Hurts chest.  My 8 year old looked at me and said, that’s gross mommy, and she was right.

Grade: C+

Lisa: Very much improved, but still highly forgettable.

Grade: B

Paris: I love Paris, always did.  However, I think her moves were too old for her.  My friend (diehard Chris fan) said she reminded her of a more talented version of Britney Spears.  Her vocals were way off too.  I love her, but was disappointed.

Grade: C+

Bucky: OK, why is it that I can spend hundreds of dollars at the beauty parlor and my hair NEVER looks as good as Bucky’s (My dream gift, a haircut from Nick Arrojo).  One of the twins favorite song is Drift Away.  I’m going to get a bit corny here: Price of ticket: too much, Amount of time waiting for a parking spot: 45 minutes because some brainiac decided to schedule a baseball game at the stadium next door on the same day as a sold out concert, the look on my daughters face when Bucky did her favorite song, priceless!  Also, vocals were great!

Grade: A

Kellie: I think she’s lucky she got a record contract.  I will go no further because I don’t want to get MJ nervous.

Grade: D+

Chris: OK, as most of you are aware, I am not a Chris fan.  However, I went to the concert with an open mind.  I really wanted to see what Lassie and others see in him.  Also, my best friend, who was at the concert with me, feels about Chris, the way I feel about Taylor (Of course, we both have our fantasies of running off with Chris and Taylor, but mine is better it includes Taylor and Johnny Depp at the same time).  Another reason I really wanted to like him.  First, his vocals were strained, not badly but noticeable and understandable.  I thought his set was very pretty, it had a lot of bells and whistles but no substance.  I didn’t see much change in his stage prescence from the show.  However, 10,000 of my friends and neighbors disagreed with me.  He would have made every Chris fan very proud.

My Grade: C
Crowds Grade: A+

Elliott:  I always loved Elliott’s voice, but I thought he needed to work on his performances.  Well, he has.  He was fantastic, definitely my choice for most improved.  Mrs. Trep, your boy made you proud!

Grade: A

Katharine: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz (got a short nap in)
She did mention that she had a cold.  I must admit, when she spoke, she really sounded congested, so I will give her a pass.

Overall Grade: D
Grade considering she was sick: B

Taylor: Ahhh, the man of the hour.  So, during SOTR I start looking in the crowd.  Then I see a crowd of security guards directly across the arena from me.  I tell my kids that to look over there that Taylor is going to start singing over there.  Some lady in front of me turns around and goes, “What do you know everything?”  So, me in my full jersey snottiness says: “Oh, so who is that good looking guy with the gray hair walking down the steps?:  She gave me a humph and turned around.  He actually started in the nosebleed sections and went through the entire arena to the stage.  I realized later that if he had chosen the other side of the stadium, he would have started right next to me.  OK, Ana, a little gel.  His hair looked more like it did for YSM.  He wore a maroon shirt, jeans and a tweed jacket.  The maroon shirt really set off the red tone of this skin.  What I found amazing, is that his teeth are so unbelievably white.  I don’t know if its because he looked so much !
darker because of the maroon shirt or if its because they look whiter in person.  Anyway, the reason I know this is because he had an ear to ear grin on the entire time.  He looked absolutely gorgeous.

Anyway, I actually never heard a word he sand on JHR.  I would say it wasn’t really cheers from the crowd, but more of an eruption.  He was not as animated as he was in Portland, but he still had all the great moves.  He got on his knees for the harp part of TITTS.  Once JHR ended, there were still a lot of cheers, but they were not as loud.  I think I know why and I don’t know if anyone else experienced this.  There were a ton of little kids in the audience.  My kids were so excited about seeing Taylor, but he didn’t get on until 10 PM.  Let’s just say that by that time, stick a fork in them, they were done.  I think that was true of a lot of the kids.

He sounded great on all the songs, but he really hit the high notes on DIMYP. The crowd sang with him and a great time was had by all.  As much as I enjoyed him, and the crowd enjoyed him, I got the impression that, like my kids, stick a fork in him, he’s done.

Grade: A+ (however, I am biased)

Group numbers: I was actually disappointed in Patience, all 4 of them sounded off.  We are the Champions was forgettable.  I don’t know what Taylor did in LIA because the twins decided to have a fist fight in the middle of it.  Remember, I said they were done.

OK, now I’m going to get a little corny and sentimental.  My take on AI.  I think the critics need to really LIGHTEN UP!!!!!  I mean, when was the last time, when was there EVER, a show that you can sit down with your kids and your grandparents and every one would enjoy it just as much.  Why do we love AI?  Because it is pure and simply, FUN!  That was what this show was last night, it won’t win any awards, but it was a hell of a time!!!!
