One last video from this week’s NYC media tour–Syesha Mercado appears on The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet on Friday. Poor Syesha. When she taped Live with Regis and Kelly on Thursday. Rickey from Rickey.org was there.

Sadly, he was the only fan waiting for her…

More from Syesha–Her Idolatry interview with Michael Slezak is up.

MJ, I know you are a fair-minded individual, but, I just can’t get interested in anything Syesha. But, I wanted there to be a post here, so, I can say, like Rickey, I was here. LOL

Poor Syesha. If she weren’t so boring…

  3. 3 sumidol May 31st, 2008 at 6:31 pm

That is sad, one person? Explain again to me how she ended up #3? I think she has a lovely voice, I never felt the passion that I need to go along with a performance.

I love that her hair is natural again! yay!

  5. 5 carolina May 31st, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Now that’s some bad ass press, no time to give her ONLY fan an autograph. At that rate it might be only 2 months before they say — syesha who?

  6. 6 Chicago-sally May 31st, 2008 at 8:32 pm

You guys gotta admit that she’s very stylish. She wears some of the best clothing….she should start a clothing line. She’s got a very pop-ish voice.

I tried. I really tried to listen with new ears to Syesha’s Idolatry interview. What new light would she shine on her Idol experience that would alter my opinion of her. Sorry to say, she only solidified my distaste for her. Anyone who has to tell us she has a likable personality - DOESN’T. Anyone who has to use “like” to pepper everything she says - HAS NOTHING TO SAY TO ME. I think she is the only AI contestant who should have just shut up, dressed to impress, and sung her songs. Period.

  8. 8 Chicago-sally May 31st, 2008 at 8:41 pm

MN Sue: Oh, how much I disagree with you. She was very literate, very smart. Actually i liked her conversation with Slezak and that’s what she was having — a conversation. And she was honest, they the judges gave her all type of conflicting criticism and they also tried to limit her to “Broadway”. I think she’s going to surprise you guys, she’s very upbeat and positive, and assure of herself.

She reminds me of Jennifer Hudson — she never gave up. She’s also very independent minded, or that’s what I gathered from the interview. What other girls in the competition have a “home” studio?

    Eh….

I tried watching this at Popwatch, and I only made it through 1 1/2 parts.

I feel badly for her, especially considering that she was sort of overshadowed by the two Davids. But…I just don’t think she was that good. Maybe around Season 1 or 2, but not for Season 7. And, that’s not a perception that started for me later in the game. Based on her audition, I don’t think she should have made it past Hollywood. There were at least two others who were better. At least.

Nevertheless, I still get the “You owe me a vote because I made it this far” vibe. Nothing turns me off more.

  10. 10 Chicago-sally May 31st, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Gwendolyn D, actually Syesha = Vonzell and Kimberly, and they weren’t considered all that good either. They were the “3rd” girl standing. And the judges did not want them to advance to the top 2. It seems to be a pattern. I think she still has room to grow, she’s got good command of her voice (as did Vonzell and Kimberly). As for the “like” language, if you’ve been around college kids like I have (oops!) that’s how they talk. Go to any campus and walk behind some college kids and they are so like hyped up and so like into their classes and like really want to succeed.

Actually, I started talking like them after listening to them talk. It’s just a college campus thing.

And actually I feel the same about David A., who has nothing to say and everytime he opens his mouth, I shut the TV off. He has nothing to say and that “aw gosh” smile just floors me.

One last thing that puzzles me about her. She’s part Cuban….why doesn’t she embrace her Cuban side?

  11. 11 abbysee May 31st, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Every year at least someone made it when others deserved it more. Frankly maybe there was someone even more talented than the Davids. It happens. Those who survive are not to blame. I can name people who should not have been in the top ten every year. I am among the few that think she deserved to outlast almost everyone that she did. Brooke was too frazzled, Carly too desperate, Jason just ready, etc, etc.

I don’t do the morning show anymore, so I didn’t go, the fanfare was about the Davids as it should have been.

Thanks abbysee for that insightful comment.

I actually liked Kimberly and Vonzell a great deal more than I like Syesha. It didn’t have as much to do with my perception of their talent as it did with how they came across to me as a viewer. I just don’t feel that Syesha seems very…humble. Of course, that’s my own opinion. But, on national television, with 30 million viewers, everyone is bound to perceive a performer differently. On the flip side, I’m sure there were those who didn’t like Vonzell and Kimberly as much as I did. It’s all a matter of opinion.

  14. 14 skylight1219 May 31st, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Of the 3 mentioned, Syesha, Locke and Solomon, only Kim Locke has had much of a post-idol career. Of course, Syesha is just getting started, but, I truly think she will go the way of Vonzell. You hear nothing from or about her any more. I think there will be some doors open for Syesha, but, the general public just isn’t that interested in her. IMO

  15. 15 dante May 31st, 2008 at 9:59 pm

I felt the same way about Syesha as I did Carly - good voice but absoulutly no connection. I wish them well but would not buy their music.

  16. 16 dfc May 31st, 2008 at 10:19 pm

I don’t really think Syesha will make it in the music business. There are too many singers like her. But I can see her acting on broadway and television. She’s got a flair for the dramatic.

  17. 17 MN Sue May 31st, 2008 at 10:33 pm

Syesha should just wake up and smell the coffee Idol brewed for her. Her best received performances screamed Broadway. And that is not a bad thing. I agree with dfc. If she is as smart and “assured” as Sally says, she should extend her 15 minutes to the stage. There’s more than one way to further your career post Idol.

  18. 18 skylight1219 May 31st, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Absolutely, not everyone needs to rush out and make an album just because they were on AI. Some go into acting, some Broadway, some are interviewers, and, spokespersons. There are many avenues open other than recording a CD.

  19. 19 hollygo9 May 31st, 2008 at 11:34 pm

I think that Syesha got as far as she did on ‘underdog’ mojo. She wasn’t bad, there just wasn’t any ‘there’ there. So, everytime she gave a technically proficient performance and recieved bad feedback, the audience reacted. She was the ultimate sympathy contestant.
In my mind, this is the only explaination for how a person can finish third on the show and about 10th in iTunes sales.

Interesting, that’s the same thing I wrote about Sanjaya on Rickey and was loudly criticized…..and look what he’s going — Commercials! and some TV work.

I don’t think Syesha was a “sympathy” vote….remember this: she was from Florida, which originally voted for Ramiele and then swung their vote to Syesha….plus she’s part “Hispanic” (Mercado) and I’m sure a combination of Latino and black helped her go through — plus she was the most entertaining…by which she used her body movements and walked the stage more than the other contestants.

Look — she’s still young (as is David A.) and has a lot of growing up to do. She had an agent in Florida….somebody will pull her aside and tell her to stop saying “like” in her conversation.

As for the “connection”….actually none of these Idols connected for me….but I’m not vested in the program….just a TV watcher.

  21. 21 erennick Jun 1st, 2008 at 10:02 am

I will be surprised if Syesha ever makes it as a recording artist. I think we will hear from her, but on Broadway or tv. She is definitely beautiful, but she reminds me of Vonzell, Tamyra, or LaToya. She (and they) lasted as long as they did because they were never the worst. Not discounting the talent that got her on the show in the first place, but she was inoffensive not necessarily thrilling.

BTW- The Fanesha 300 thread that Rickey did was one of the.most.hilarious.things.ever!

  22. 22 huckleberryfriend Jun 1st, 2008 at 11:15 am

I wonder if Syesha and a couple of other top 10 girls (from any season) would be successful as a girl group. They would pick up a lot of press from being 3 Idol finalists and also get to build on the fan base of each one. With 3 girls it could mask some of their weaknesses and also help fill up the stage.

  23. 23 skylight1219 Jun 1st, 2008 at 11:59 am

Taylor Hicks was entertaining. Talk about working that stage. No one did it better than Hicks. All that was missing for Syesha was a pole. Walking on the stage isn’t entertaining, it just shows that one can walk. Ramiele attempted it as well, and, it didn’t help her. Having said that, I do wish some of the contestants would’ve shown a little more spunk. But, since they were playing instruments, you can’t really get up and boogie while playing the piano.

  24. 24 awilliams Jun 1st, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Totally agree about Taylor Hicks. He was also one of the older, more mature contestants and had cut his teeth in the business for many years.

I think what we see with Syesha, Ramiele, and some of the others is just their youth and lack of experience. More experience in life will help boost their confidence so they can climb out of themselves more.

It takes being comfortable in your own skin to really get out there and ’show ‘em what ya got’ the way Taylor did and the way I believe David Cook has.

  25. 25 dfc Jun 1st, 2008 at 1:11 pm

I feel like Syesha has self-confidence. At least enough to “work that chair”. She just doesn’t have the pazazz that Taylor, DC, and Jason have. At least, not for me. Yes, I’m a long time Soul Patroller and proud of it. Taylor made me stay up past my bedtime to vote for him for four hours. I haven’t done that for anyone else. But, I do wish Syesha success in whatever she does. I just hope it doesn’t involve a chair or a pole. :biggrin_wp:

Oh wow - I missed this yesterday. That is freaking hilarious - one fan? No time for a photo?

Now that’s some bad ass press, no time to give her ONLY fan an autograph. At that rate it might be only 2 months before they say — syesha who?

I think you’re being generous. I say 30 days max.

Okay, so again, Florida is a pretty big state, with a really diverse population. Many of us didn’t grow up here, so we don’t necessarily feel that hometown loyalty to other Floridians. Syesha is from Sarasota, which is a fairly small community. So, I’m just not thinking she was pulling in a big Floridian vote. At least I know that this Floridian, and all of my local AI watching friends were not voting for her. And for me, Sarasota is only a bridge and 30 minutes away.

And no, I don’t think that Rami had some unified Floridian vote at any point either.

One last thing that puzzles me about her. She’s part Cuban….why doesn’t she embrace her Cuban side?

Umm, how do you know she doesn’t? She could be eating a Cuban sandwich and drinking some Cafe con Leche right now as we speak.

Duh, to be truly Cuban she would’ve had to perform the Guantanamera whilst draped in a Cuban flag. And ripped up a photo of Castro, uh, Fidel not Jason after she sang. ;) (Heh, hi SpenserJ!)

I am from Florida. I never voted for either Ramiele OR Syesha, even in the beginning couple of weeks of the semis when I was voting for several contestants each week. Way to generalize and pigeonhole an ENTIRE state.

AMEN - I’m from Fla. too - didn’t lob one vote in her direction.

  31. 31 fannatic Jun 1st, 2008 at 11:39 pm

She has a great voice but she lacks originality. Maybe if she is given her own material to sing, she will stand out more.

    sorry double post
