Chris Sligh Announces New Deal with Word Records

Season 6 Idol, Chris Sligh has just announced on twitter he’s signed a new record deal with the Christian major label, Warner Brothers/Word records.

“My new deal is with Warner Bros./Word Records. You’re the first to know!!!” tweeted Chris, “I’m sure this will come out but when I was a kid the first CCM records I ever got had the big ‘ol Word W on the label…”

“At 16 I remember dreaming of someday being a Word artist. Wow. Dream come true!”

Wait, since Chris is disassociating himself from American Idol, should I even be blogging this news? Heh. Just kidding (sort of) Good luck on your new label, Chris.

Chris Sligh: I Will Not Be Commenting On Idol Any Longer

Chris Sligh put up a new blog post today. He’s going to be erasing any mention of Idol from his promo materials for his upcoming album and tour, and in light of that, he plans to quit blogging and tweeting about Idol altogeher:

With all of this in mind, it seems a bit hypocritical to be tweeting about Idol and Idols as much as I do. So, as of today, I am making a conscious decision to delete Idol from my publishing life as well. I will not be commenting on Idol any longer. I think that this is the season to stop: it’s so horrible that I can’t imagine that I will have ANYTHING to say but negative…and I am simply trying to control how much negative I have a part in. Well, I may throw a comment in every now and then…but not en force like it has been in the past.

So, Idol is a double-edged sword…but it won’t be with me any more. I’ll end with this:

American Idol, thanks for the joy you’ve given me for the last 3 years, both in my career and seeing how other’s succeed. But I’ve got to let you go now. Time to move on! Good luck to you in the future…you are loved.

Ha ha. It’s hard to imagine Chris Sligh keeping his opinions to himself. So, all I can say is good luck with that. (And with the upcoming album and tour…)

Chris Sligh, Phil Stacey and Mandisa Record Haiti Charity Single

Popular Christian artist, Michael W. Smith got a group of gospel and country artists together in Nashville last Wednesday (Jan 27) to record “Come Together Now” a song written by Smith and fellow Gospel veterans, David Mullen and Cindy Morgan.

The song will be released soon, with all proceeds going to fund the Haiti relief effort.

Amongst the Christian artists asked to participate were  Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey from Season 6, and Season 5’s Mandisa.

After the jump, check out a couple of videos: One shot at the recording by Russ Mohr, one of the participants and lead singer of Christian band, Fundamental Elements.

There are short interviews with Chris and Mandisa, and Phil can be spotted singing with the group.

The second, from Smith’s You Tube channel, shows the group rehearsing, and gives you a pretty good idea of what the song will sound like.

Some of the other artists involved in the effort: Stephen Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Matt Maher, members of dc Talk, Casting Crowns, the Newsboys, Selah, Margaret Becker, the Katinas, Point of Grace, John Schlitt and Nicole C. Mullin.

Chris Sligh Signs a New Record Deal

Chris Sligh had blogged that a “major record deal” was in the works, but that some of the finer details–publishing rights in particular–still had to be ironed out. Finally, Chris posts that the deal is done:

Well, the deal is finally done. We got everything worked out with everyone involved and are finally moved on to the long form. So, unless something crazy happens in the long form phase (which rarely if ever happens) then within a couple of weeks, this deal will be done officially, official announcements and press releases will be made and within a few weeks I’ll be in a warm, cozy recording studio working on album #2…tentatively titled “All the Angles”. For that I am very excited.

Chris was formerly on Brash records, but they mutually decided to part ways after the release of Chris’s post-Idol debut, Running Back to You.

After the jump, check out the tentative track list for Chris’s new album:

Chris Sligh Advises the Season 8 Idols

Season 6 Idol, Chris Sligh just posted a blog with some realistic advice for the Season 8 Idols.

After Chris’s Idol stint, he released an album of Christian Music with Brash records. His first single, “Empty Me” went Top 10 on the Christian Charts. He co-wrote the Rascall Flatts country hit, “Here Comes Goodbye”. Not too shabby for a 10th place finisher!

His advice is clear-eyed and realistic. Hope the Idols who didn’t get signed by 19 read it…

To the Idols: A Realistic look at your career prospects
So, American Idol Season 8 is officially finished. Last tour date done. People are moving home and for the next several years will try to move on. I believe that this season of Idol was one of the most talented, but if History repeats itself the majority of these Idols will do nothing in music and will be washes within 3 or 4 years. Not trying to be mean, just being real.

So, how is it that the fat, not-so-great-looking guy who came in 10th place is the 2nd or 3rd most successful from his season and top 5 most successful over Season 6 & 7? The difference is pure drive and ambition and work ethic. I haven’t had luck on my side. I haven’t had a major label behind me yet (though that is about to happen). I haven’t had 19E’s help AT ALL. I have simply worked my tail off, been pro-active and worked on becoming better at my craft. Not that other people haven’t worked…sure they’ve worked…but not on the right things…and they’ve had an unrealistic view of what Idol can and will do for them.
