UPDATE: You can listen to a snippet of the single “What’s Right is Right” at Amazon.
Taylor Hicks is currently putting the finishing touches on his next album, according to a data sheet released by Taylor’s promotors, Rocket Science.
The album, titled The Distance, is due to hit stores on March 10.
The single, “What’s Right is Right” will be available at digital outlets on January 20th, and will impact Adult Contemporary radio the same day.
A video shoot is scheduled for the single on January 12.
Print articles include features in Entertainment Weekly and People in February.
An appearance on American Idol is currently in the planning stages.
Taylor will visit Ryan Seacrest at KISS, Jay Leno in mid-February, Regis and Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres, Craig Ferguson and Rachel Ray the week the album drops, plus visits to morning TV shows in every city the show Grease performs.
Currently playing the Teen Angel in the touring company of Grease, Taylor will perform the new single at the end of every show. He’s also got club dates set in Maryland, Ohio and Chicago, with more dates to be scheduled.
He’s got a ton of promotion lined up for both the album and the single, including satellite TV on album release day, a radio tour for the single, radio advertising, and tie-ins around Mother’s Day with Hallmark, American Greetings and 1-800 Flowers.
That’s some heavy-duty promotion right there. I’m impressed. It’ll be cool to see Taylor on my TV again in the coming months.

Wow, I think I might like it-even though the words sound like a coronation song. I hear shades of “Breakaway” and “Drift Away” in that small clip.
I must say - hello LISA! :)
Sigh. I was a HUGE Taylor fan on AI and went to 2 of his concerts. But as far as the general public goes … he is not living up to his early hype. And from listening to this snippet, it’s not going to get any better for him. I know it’s just a snippet but I really dislike this song (piece of song). There is absolutely nothing there to make this a radio hit. And WHY does he keep targeting adult contemporary? That is a death knell. The only AC artists that do well, are the ones that had a hit on another format and the song just crossed over.
Sorry Taylor. This song sounds just like all the others you’ve written. I was really hoping for some exciting collaborations and a little more ‘new’ soul feel.
This song is just bad and will confirm the public’s opinion. Two missteps will be a lot harder to recover from. I fear he’s making a big mistake if this is what the new cd sounds like.
Sorry. Sigh.
Well, if that small snippet is indicative of what the cd sounds like, that will be a complete disaster. I don’t know why he wants to take the AC route, but I doubt he will have any success with that.
But, I’ll wait until the cd comes out to decide about it.
Wow, only $20 to see Adele and James Morrison. Incredible. As far as Taylor charging $40, I guess he’s more into making his established fans pay top price to see him rather than gaining new ones. It is very hard to move a brand new song up the AC chart and most songs are crossover hits.
dbt - Taylor didn’t write this song. it was written by Dennis Morgan from Nashville who has had numerous hit songs sung by top named stars in all genres’: http://www.dennismorgansongwriter.com/index.php
I am excited to hear the rest of the song and the entire album! I also can’t wait to see Grease and see Taylor at Martyrs! They both should be amazing! All this excitement about Taylor is long overdue! He is such a humble and hard working person and deserves all the good things that are coming his way!
***Waves & hugs*** Hello girl how are ya? Hope you come around here more often. I have hopes there is more to this cd, but well you know he fooled me once with that last one, lol.
ETA…trying to fix the quotes.
The first part of the song sounded like it could have fit on his first CD. I didn’t like it very much. As the song begins to open up toward the end of the clip though, I began thinking it could have promise. I’m hoping so much that Taylor can get his recording career back on track. You can tell he’s very excited.
“As the song begins to open up toward the end of the clip though, I began thinking it could have promise”
Judy I kind of thought that too about the end of the clip. In the middle (I think it was the I will share part) it sounded kind of like a Backstreet Boys song. But at the end that run or back chorus or whatever sounded more soulful. I just hope the whole song and particularly the whole album is not an attempt to put Taylor into a pop music genre. It’s amazing to me that Taylor went through all of AI putting his own spin on all those songs without any amount of massive assistance from producers or music industry types but when he gets all that help they seem to really struggle to figure out the songs Taylor should be singing. I’d love to have been a fly on the wall and heard Taylor’s input on the first album and also on this one. It would be interesting to see if he reacted differently.
Eager to hear more. I enjoy Taylor’s voice and am looking forward to seeing what he can do when given a fair chance. Talented guy who has earned whatever good things come his way.
