The 59th Primetime Emmy Awards

Here’s the opening minutes of tonight’s Emmy telecast, including Ryan’s opening monologue. American Idol  lost Outstanding Directing For A Variety, Music Or Comedy Program to Tony Bennett: An American Classic in the first hour.

The show is pretty dull, but it’s not Ryan’s fault–he really hasn’t had that much screen time. There are a few good comedy bits though. I’ll be posting those in a bit.

Watch American Idol lose “Outstanding Reality-competition Program” to The Amazing Race. Again! Guess that Emmy-bait “Idol Gives Back” didn’t do the trick…completely. Before the presentation, Wayne Brady plays “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” with Rainn Wilson from The Office and Kanye West. Funny.

More Emmy clips after the jump…

Ryan leaves the heavy comedy lifting to the professionals. Some of the best bits:

The montage the nominees put together for the “Outstanding Writing for A Variety, Music or Comedy Program” are always hilarious. This year is no exception. The writing team from Late Night with Conan O’Brien won this year. Go Homeboy! Whoo hoo!

This Steve Carell bit with the cast of The Office is classic. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won “Outstanding Variety Music Or Comedy Series.” Awesome.

Steven Colbert and Jon Stewart present the award for “Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.” Ricky Gervais wins for “Extras.” Ricky Gervais isn’t there to receive his award. Watch what happens next. Heh.

Lewis Black rants. Very Funny.

Why Sanjaya? That was interesting, the opening monologue mentioned Sanjaya — instead of Jordin or Blake, etal. If you read reviews of the Idols tour, the writer opens with Sanjaya’s name…I wonder if he’s the most “famous” of the Idols in S6? I think there’s a big future for Sanjaya, I hope he has good management and takes advantage and strikes while the iron is hot, instead of doing what he says he’s doing — writing music with his sister and a CD next year. No no no! Television modeling cooking show — that’s where he needs to do immediately!

Ryan was good, he makes people feel comfortable.

Yeah to Ryan who I felt did admirably with his first big gig, the writers did leave him a bit to the sidelines, but he moved the show along and despite some boredom and predictable moments, it was alright, Loved the bit with Kanye and Rainn (who would have thunk
Kanye has a sense of humor) American idol loses again, not a surprise, better previous seasons were passed over, even with Idol gives back, Amazing race was more exciting, better produced and deserved the win.

I enjoyed the emmy’s for the first time last nite. I thought Ryan did a good job…not too much, not too little..That’s what a host should do..I hate when the jokes just keep coming and coming and all you want to do is hear who won! Loved the Kanye/Brady skit…

True confession time: I love Wayne Brady. Can’t help it y’all.

The only thing that would have made the American Idol loss sweeter would have been for them to pan to Simon/Nigel/Simon immediately after they announced The Amazing Race win. They really went out of their way to meddle with the results this season and that ticks me off.

Personally, I REALLY want to know what they bleeped out that Sally Fields said in her ridiculous long acceptance speech.
    Anyone hear it?

I thought Ryan did well but I kept having dejavu…kind of that weird feeling….is this Idol?….probably just me.

She said “And, let’s face it, if the mothers ruled the war, there would be no god-damn wars in the first place,”

My take: Ryan did a fine job. I am a big fan of his even from the Dunkelman years. Ok, year. Ryan is a smooth operator and a very calming presence. I mean, what can one really do with a hosting job after the opening of the show but just move the show along?

Yay for “30 Rock”! I am one of the “dozens and dozens” who watch it. Wish Baldwin and Fey had won in their categories but it was nice for the show to win.

Idol lost again to Amazing Race. No surprise. The year Idol deserved to win was Season 5. It had everything. True entertainment. Drama. Attractive leading characters. And an amazing Finale. Ah well….. I guess it is simply not meant to be.

Ryan really didn’t host at all which was a good decision. I think the Family Guy sing along intro was better than Ryan’s attempt at an opening. He really creeped out Eva Langoria and Teri Hatcher when he approached them. I felt bad for those ladies as they did not want him around and it showed. Plus, dressing up as a Tudor was just sad. Why was that included? To sum up his attempt at hosting, it was ackward, and pointless. I doubt he’ll be back anytime soon hosting the Emmys. I did like Wayne Brady and think if FOX gets the Emmys again, he should host. Either him or Hugh Laurie.

As for the actual awards, I felt that it went as pretty much expected. 30 Rock was the funniest comedy of the year and I’m glad they didn’t fall into the hype and choose the mediocre Ugly Betty which isn’t funny at all. Sopranos was the best drama of the year (despite the horrible finale episode). Jeremy Piven and Jamie Pressly deserved their awards. They are fantastic at their roles. And kudos for Sally Field for blasting the war. More people need to stand up and say it. Get the kids out of Iraq! As for Idol, unfortunately a lot of people still see it as a novelty show. It might win on it’s final season, but until then people will keep voting for the Amazing Race.

Thank you Mj!!! I was looking everywhere for the stewart/colbert skit, but google vid and youtube denied me. I should have known I could rely on you.
Ryan earnestly saying to “Look for Lewis Black, this fall…on valium” was high-larious.

Nielsen ratings: Fewer people watched the Emmys

A big loser at this year’s Emmy ceremony? The Emmys broadcast, which may have been the least-watched in history.

Preliminary figures from Nielsen Media Research put the audience for Sunday’s show, aired on Fox, at 13.1 million viewers. That’s 3 million fewer than for last year’s telecast, on NBC, and less than the record low 13.8 million three years ago on ABC….

Ohhh, mj! Thanks for posting the writers’ nominations. That is always the very best thing on the Emmy’s every year. I was glad to see it again. Ditto, Lewis Black.

Thanks MJ. I was flipping channels so I maissed Lewis Black.

I think that Ryan did a good job. I’m happy for him.

I know it’s not Idol-on-topic, but you wouldn’t happen to be able to do a vid of the 30 Rock win? After Alec Baldwin losing Best Actor, I had resigned myself to the final Ugly Betty ass-kissing of the night and was away from the teevee when they announced the award. :doh_tb: I haven’t been able to find the full award speech anywhere.

You know how I loves my 30 Rock/all-things-tangential-to-SNL, MJ. :happy_tb:

P.S. w00t for Conan! That makes 3 of last night’s winners that I’ve met! :tongue1_tb:
