You go, Jennifer! Your voice rocks! Enjoy the moment, take a short rest, and then get back out there. Your voice is too wonderful to be silent for long after this. :clap_tb:

JHud is a fabulous singer. She’s before I got into AI but I’m a fan! Egg on your face, Simon!!

When asked about AI after winning her oscar, Jennifer said that “AI is a platform” for talented people to be seen. She gave props to AI for that.

Wow what a voice Jennifer has!

I am so happy for Jennifer. Remarkable career to start with. I hope she comes back to American Idol and sings this season. Lakisha and Melinda…TAKE NOTE!

Wow MJ - thanks for showing that medley since I completely wiped out last night and fell asleep early. It is very obvious that Jennifer and Beyonce are anxious to look like bff since they allowed each other to sing portions of each of their personal solo songs from the movie. All of them shared the stage so well and it sounded great. I congratulate Jennifer on her win - and I congratulate both of them for making that medley so special. Whether it was forced or natural - they did a lot to squash the rumor that Beyonce hated Jennifer or was jealous. I think Jennifer was being honored by Beyonce in so many ways in that medley.

I can’t believe the idiots who run the American Idol website got the name of Jennifer’s character wrong!! Celie???

    Congratulations Jennifer Hudson!

They also typoed her name at the end there! That’s kind of insulting.

Congratulations Jennifer! When Eddie Murphy didn’t win for his role I got pretty nervous for her.

And then I go and typo her name, lol. Sorry Jennifer!

    I need some coffee…

Congrats to J-Hud! Even though I’ve never been a fan of hers, I watched the Oscars all night just to see her acceptance speech because I just knew she’d win. She was genuinely surprised when they called her name, and what she said about her gran was fantastic and very moving. She deserved the award, and surely we can expect many more to come her way in the coming years. Wasn’t her performance on the show last night just outstanding? That girl can sang!

I loved seeing Jennifer Hudson win last night - good for her. She seems like an incredibly nice person who is humble and self-effacing. It also further underscores what a huge vehicle American Idol is regardless of where you finish if you’re truly talented (makes me wonder what we’ll see from Mandisa??).

Sidenote - Anyone else catch that Antonella Barba may have posed naked and the pictures have surfaced on the internet?

Update: The tireless, omniscient MJ already knew about this. I should have scrolled further on the front page!! Ack! Sorry!

Congratulations to Jennifer Hudson on her Oscar! I’m so glad for her success and hope it continues. I know it will as far as her talent is concerned.

Jennifer was my favorite in AI4. I was shocked when she left as #7 and after that lost interest in that season’s contest. (Judging by the number of people who now claim Jennifer as their favorite in AI4, she should have won by a landslide! But she really was my favorite!!)

Great to see her last night looking and sounding wonderful! And being as down-to-earth as ever.

I can’t resist putting in a correction to a couple of the above posts: Jennifer Hudson’s character in “Dreamgirls” is named Effie.

(I believe Celie is the name of the lead character in “The Color Purple,” the part that Fantasia will be starring in on Broadway soon.) Anyway, I guess it’s all about American Idol!

Hmmm… Jennifer Hudson thanks everyone in her speech but fails to mention the platform that launched her nationally — AMERICAN IDOL.

There have been 3 award winners who are AI alumni. Only Carrie Underwood has acknowledged American Idol in her acceptance speeches.

Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson seem to have forgotten to do so.

  17. 17 dave Feb 26th, 2007 at 10:57 am

I thought her speech was very touching.

I don’t think she had any need to thank AI in her speech. She was on
AI3 and her role was not a direct result of being on AI. Its not like winning an award off the CD that was recorded with Clive. IMO.

She was on season 3, not 4. It’s funny how many ppl are saying she was their fave now that she’s a success! When she was on the show during season 3 she had A LOT of ppl that did NOT like her. She came off as smug and conceited. LaToya London was far more talented than she was. Of course Fantasia won, and her BRILLIANT performance of Summertime (the original performance, not the three other times she did it on the show) was clearly what won it for her. Many still consider it the best vocal ever sung on AI to this day, and I’d have to agree.

Anyhow, today is J-Hud’s day, so we should let her enjoy her win. She will likely go on to a great career. The fact she didn’t thank AI is completely appropriate. However, the one she SHOULD have given credit to was Paula Abdul who opened up for her the opportunity to take part in the original audition which led to her ultimate oscar win last night.

  19. 19 jenniewdc Feb 26th, 2007 at 12:07 pm

I was going to correct my mistake, but thanks for doing it for me, Dov Cohen. Yes, Jennifer Hudson took part in AI3, not AI4. (Carrie Underwood won AI4 and Fantasia won AI3.)

I don’t agree at all with the above poster’s assessment of Jennifer as “smug and conceited” when she was on AI3. But, as the old saying goes, “That’s what makes horseraces.” And that’s also what makes American Idol competitions. If we all agreed, then there wouldn’t be a competition.

I thought Jennifer was confident, but far from conceited. Without confidence, she would never have become a breakout star in “Dreamgirls.” As far as Latoya or Fantasia being more talented than Jennifer — that’s simply a matter of opinion. And I don’t agree with your opinion.

I also enjoyed Jennifer’s sense of humor and fun on AI3. (She took some teasing about a couple of the outfits she wore, the bright pink dress and the one that Simon thought looked like aluminum foil — a far cry from the designer fashions she wears now. But I’m glad she still seems as down-to-earth and good humored as she was then.)

When I said that now a lot of people are saying that Jennifer was their favorite on AI, my point was that — because of her great success — a lot of people are saying that, even though they didn’t vote for her during AI3. But I know many people who did enjoy her on AI3 as much as I did.

At the time, I was looking forward to a Top 3 that would have included Jennifer, Fantasia and Latoya — all special voices. (Latoya was my least favorite. I found her bland. Again, that’s why they call it a competition.)

And, yes, today is Jennifer Hudson’s day!!

I don’t think she came off as smug and conceited at all, and while I thoroughly enjoyed LaToya London I think comparing her with Jennifer Hudson is like comparing apples and oranges. I did vote for Jennifer and was shocked when she was voted off the show. As for Fantasia…she’s never been my cup of tea. Her pronunciation bothers me and I don’t think she’s all that great. I think Broadway is a good place for her.

I was very happy for Jennifer Hudson last night. I hope she has much more success in the coming years as well.

I believe Jennifer could have thanked American Idol, but the music cut her off and she had to stop.

  22. 22 radname Feb 26th, 2007 at 7:08 pm

i think jennifer has mentioned american idol and what it has done for her countless times, before and after the awardshow. she has roughly 60 seconds to say her acceptance speech and i think there’s a lot more people she’d rather thank that mean more to her then thanking a reality show she was on 3 years ago

Speaking of the Oscars, here is a winner who epitomizes the saying : “TRUE FOR THEE, BUT NOT FOR ME”

    http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/article.php?article_id=367

Al Gore’s Personal Energy Use Is His Own “Inconvenient Truth”

Gore’s home uses more than 20 times the national average

Last night, Al Gore’s global-warming documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, collected an Oscar for best documentary feature, but the Tennessee Center for Policy Research has found that Gore deserves a gold statue for hypocrisy.

Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Since the release of An Inconvenient Truth, Gore’s energy consumption has increased from an average of 16,200 kWh per month in 2005, to 18,400 kWh per month in 2006.

Gore’s extravagant energy use does not stop at his electric bill. Natural gas bills for Gore’s mansion and guest house averaged $1,080 per month last year.

Unbelievable that the Inconvenient Truth song won out over these three stellar performances…well, I guess its Oscar politics as usual now that I think of it. Not that I don’t like AIT, just seems way off that the bigtime musical wouldn’t win for best song…

Silly me! I didn’t realize poor journalism and misinformation about Al Gore’s campaign and J-Hud day were the same thing.
