The Idols on Larry King Live

Jordin Sparks

Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks

More Interviews:

I’m just listening to these through now.  Apparently, according to Phil Stacey, they were told that Chris Richardson came in 5th and Phil came in 6th….

Interesting how they changed it up this year. In previous seasons, only the winner and runner-up were on, Ryan hosted, and Randy Jackson was there as well. I actually liked Larry having on all ten finalists. It was cool to see them all in a relaxed, sort of normal setting (if LKL can be considered normal). Loved Blake’s comments too! He’s definitely the most unconventional Idol ever, and it will be fun to watch his career take off. And I’m certain that it will.

Thanks for posting these MJ! To some extent, I’m not surprised that Blake didn’t get an automatic recording contract. I think he’ll do amazingly well, but for some reason, I just never had a feeling that he was someone that the label wanted, but I guess that’s kind of hard to determine without seeing Clive’s interraction with the contestants.

But I’m wondering, in years past, did the runner-ups automatically get record deals? Like, was it in their contracts that if they made it to the top 2, they would be signed..?Or did SONY/BMG just have first option, but was never obligated to sign anyone other than the winner..? Last year, Katharine said that her goal was to make it to the top 2 because she knew that she would have a record deal if she did. I’m wondering if she was told that SONY/BMG would pick up her option and Blake was told that they wouldn’t…? That seems to me like it’s a likely scenario. Or maybe SONY/BMG sees that the past runners-up aren’t exactly platinum-selling and they decided to stop signing them…? That doesn’t seem likely to me though since some non-winners have been very successful. I can’t see SONY/BMG dropping their option rights altogether…

I don’t think they ever had to sign the #2 person but have in the past (not sure about Diana because I didn’t watch it). I’ve heard that Blake is going to sign with Clive and 19E but probably can’t say so yet. I knew they’d snap him up because he’s the one most likely to sell well imo.

Loved the interviews. They all seem to be so tight although wonder what they really thought about Sanjaya getting a solo on the finale? It’s funny to see Blake so oblivious about the show while still making it to the finals.

Clive announced really early on last year that he would sign both Taylor and Katharine. So they knew going into the finale that they both were getting a deal.

Honestly I don’t think Clive is interested in any of the top 3 this year. He HAS to sign Jordin, but he doesn’t have to sign the others and he may choose not to do so.

All the other runner ups were signed by Clive. Katharine, and Clay’s were the fastest signings (in that we knew before the finale they were both being signed regardless of placement). Bo was signed rather quickly afterwards. Justin and Diana took a lot longer to get signed.

Taylor’s deal was announced the Wednesday after Memorial Day so Jordin’s should be out sometime this week.

Kat’s deal was announced within a week of Taylor’s so we’ll see if we hear anything on Blake by the end of the following week.

Jordin and Blake came across as very genuine people truly happy for the other one. It’s becoming increasingly obvious to me why America voted them into the top 2.

  5. 5 B May 26th, 2007 at 3:54 pm

I’m pretty sure people knew Bo would be signed by Clive the same way they suspected he was going to sign Katharine regardless of the show’s results. With both contestants, during their little sit-down sessions with Clive during top 3, Clive spoke about recording with the two of them in terms of “when” and not “if.”

  6. 6 LoriOH May 26th, 2007 at 4:01 pm

I did like seeing all the idols on LKL. They seem like a good bunch. I’ve heard comments several times that AI crew and staff were amazed that everyone is so nice this year and that they all get along. Makes me wonder what previous years were like!

Best part of the night is when Blake said the word ‘balls’. Jordin just started giggling and put her head down. Priceless.

  7. 7 foxydonna May 26th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

So Chris Rich plays drums, Sligh guitar, Phil keyboards, and Blake guitar. How cool would it be to hear them perform together as a band on the tour show (Gina could sing). Even better, why not form a band? Imagine an all-Idol band. I’d go see them!

  8. 8 foxydonna May 26th, 2007 at 4:50 pm

I remember when Bo and Carrie were on LKL, Bo did not have a firm deal. He hinted that it was in the works, but couldn’t confirm anything at that point.

Thanks for recording it MJ :-)

    Yet another Idol myth debunked:

    http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,1078566,00.html?cid=redirect-articles/

Bice finished in second place on this season’s Idol, behind Oklahoma native Carrie Underwood. But being a runner-up hasn’t hurt Bice’s career: He signed a record deal with RCA less than 24 hours after the Idol finale and his single of the show’s original song “Inside Your Heaven,” has topped the charts.

Just because Bo wasn’t at liberty to discuss his contract — or perhaps simply preferred not to — doesn’t mean he wasn’t signed.

  11. 11 Nevada May 26th, 2007 at 7:51 pm

And for the record, this is what Diana DeGarmo had to say about being signed:

DEGARMO: I don’t know if “own” is the correct term, but you do get a lot of opportunities through them. I was signed with RCA along with Fantasia, right at the end of our finale, before we were done.

From the CNN transcript of an interview with Diana, Elliott, and Bucky on Larry King Live (03-07-07).

    http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0703/07/lkl.01.html

So many myths, so little time….

  12. 12 Sarah May 26th, 2007 at 7:55 pm

Okay, I’m reading through the transcript that Kirsten posted in the news thread and this just cracked me up.

KING: You’ve got a clean-cut image. Why the tattoos?
LEWIS: I love art. I love good art. I’m getting my whole …
KING: Why not put it on canvas.
    LEWIS: Because I can’t draw.

    LMAO.

And so he’s talking about having a deal and a cd out by the end of the year in one interview and then saying on LKL that he doesn’t get one automatically and “hopes” to get one? Good grief, Blake! LOL.

  13. 13 NOLA May 26th, 2007 at 8:07 pm

Rumor is, on another site, that Melinda has already been signed by Clive.

  14. 14 ardnian May 26th, 2007 at 9:01 pm

KING: What kind of songs do you like to sing?

LEWIS: Lots of stuff that’s jazz influenced. A lot more melodic music, pop, funk, rock. Stuff that will make you get off your feet.

Yay! I’m happy with his description of the album he’s gonna make. :)

  15. 15 NOLA May 26th, 2007 at 9:13 pm

I’m not crazy that Blake says he wants to make an electronic
    dance album.

  16. 16 xoxoyc May 26th, 2007 at 9:15 pm

NOLA: I read that rumor but I don’t think it’s true. Jordin has to sign first and her deal has not been announced yet. Blake would have the next chance.

So she could be in talks but it can’t be official for awhile- unless they change the rules again.

Which they did last year so……. who knows?

  17. 17 Sarah May 26th, 2007 at 9:27 pm

Just because Jordin’s deal has not been announced does not mean that it has not been signed.

  18. 18 RightSaidFred May 26th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

Jordin has to sign first …

    Not true.

  19. 19 bean99 May 26th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

The rumor is that Blake was talking to someone at the after party and the inference is it’s Clive since nobody else can talk to them at that point. I imagine Clive knows exactly who he wants by that point and it’s only a matter of getting the deal done.

I loved seeing the top 10 on LKL. I really like most of them and like how well they all seem to get along. I don’t remember getting that same vibe last season.

  20. 20 NOLA May 26th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

I also disagree that Jordin has to sign first. To be blunt, I don’t think there was ever anything in writing about signing the runner-up. That has just become lagniappe. These people are not stupid. They aren’t going to let Blake slip through their fingers.

As far as the Melinda rumor goes, I wouldn’t be surprised if she wasn’t the first signed, by Clive. He will definitely sign Jordin and Blake, so there is no rush there and it would be smart to get Melinda’s name on paper, so someone else couldn’t sign her first.

Phil made a comment that he had offers the night he was booted off and got several more, via email the next day. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if Clive has already signed him, also.

  21. 21 xoxoyc May 26th, 2007 at 11:31 pm

They can have offers or be in talks but they can not SIGN until the winner signs. It is written into the contract that way on purpose.

Seriously, what does the winner get if everyone can sign the day they are voted off the show?

The rules say that the winner does have to sign first. That is why Taylor was the first to make his deal official last year.

Also, if 19 does not pick up their option they usually have to wait until after the tour before finalizing any deals with other agencies. They are under contract with 19E through the end of the tour. So from my understanding they can be in talks but they can not sign for new representation or accept offers until that time- unless 19E chooses to release them early.

So if what rightsaidfred is true and Jordin does not have to be the first to sign- what is the point in winning? If everyone can get the same deal is there even a point to the competition anymore? It should be about more than the title IMO.

Anyway, it is quite possible that Jordin has already signed– we’ll just have to wait for the official announcements over the next few weeks.

  22. 22 NOLA May 26th, 2007 at 11:38 pm

XO, would you please post the link to the contract of which you are referring? Thx.

  23. 23 xoxoyc May 27th, 2007 at 12:38 am

The link was posted multiple times last season- it was discussed at great length last season.

It’s just common sense IMO. Why have a contest winner if they become the last ones to get the prize?

It was also in an interview with Nigel that MJ had up here at the blog last year for awhile- there is a certain length of time that the non-winners have to wait- only exception is the runner up.

It used to be the finalists had to wait a full year after the winners album was released to release an album (again except for the runner up) but that rule was broken last year in the year of everyone get’s signed.

Here’s an article that supports they are under contract with 19 until after the tour (first paragraph):

    http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1498152/20050315/id_0.jhtml

There’s more I can post tomorrow I’ll have to hunt it up.

    Wow…I’ve wandered into Wonderland again.

  25. 25 meme May 27th, 2007 at 12:46 am

If I remember correctly, I thought MJ requested sometime back that if we had a comment about something or someone that it was to be backed up by proof or clickable links, not Rumor Has It? :question_wp:

Taylor Hicks record deal was announced on May 31, 2007.

Katharine McPhee’s record deal was announced on June 6, 2007.

    Chris Daughtry’s was announced July 10, 2007.

    Kellie’s was announced July 18, 2007.

So I suppose it is possible that they all signed at the same time- and that they waited weeks in between to make it look like they were signed in order.

I guess we will never really know.

I’m still looking for that interview with Nigel last year that was in USA Today (MJ had it on the blog last year) that states how long the non-winning contestants have to wait until they release an album. And that they are under contract with 19E until three months after the tour. That means they can’t sign with anyone but 19E until that time. (Chris D. and Kellie signed with 19 so they were signed earlier than that last year. Elliott, Bucky, Paris were not and their deals were announced much later).

Nevada that quote from Diana being signed right at the finale bothers me: she was going on shows for WEEKS after the finale was over saying she did NOT have a record deal yet. So that is strange…… There was much handwringing by her fans for quite a while after the show was over because her deal was not announced for quite awhile.

  28. 28 bean99 May 27th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

I’m going to guess that more will be striving for an earlier release this time ala Chris D and Kellie. My guess is that they’ll be pushing for at least a couple of them to work during the tour. That’s where it’s good for those who have already been writing songs. Where it gets tricky is if any will compete with Jordin. I doubt they’ll view Blake’s album that way but maybe Melinda.

  29. 29 Seraphina May 27th, 2007 at 1:39 pm

I’d be really surprised if Blake wasn’t signed pretty soon after the finale just as in previous years. There’s no doubt he’s commercial and current, and Simon himself described him as a pop star on one occasion and the more easily marketable of the final two on I think Leno last Monday? Clive won’t pass up getting his claws into a good thing.

On another note - anyone notice how out of it Haley seemed on LKL? While they showed Sanj’s video clip he looked worried about her as if something was wrong, same with Phil. Kind of a strange moment. :ponder_tb:
