The Next Great American Band…SPOILERS!

I never got around to posting a recap of last Friday’s Next Great American Band. Whoops. The short of it–the bands performed Bob Dylan covers and some were more successful than others. I’ll just leave it at that.

My favorite bands so far are The Clark Brothers–all are excellent musicians. I love their gritty delivery. And, Tres Bien! I have a soft spot for retro Brit Pop.

Country band, Sixwire, seem to have it all going on. They are good musicians, write commercially viable songs and look good. I think they could take it all.

This week’s show has been taped. If you want to know the two bands eliminated this week, click the jump link!

Eliminated This Week:

The Hatch - Good looking front man. However, the band has no songwriting skills. Their original song last week was a non-melodic mess.

The Likes of You - The lead singer sang with an ear-piercing falsetto. It was not pleasant. Plus he totally lacked charisma. They’ve only been together 5 months–that could be part of the problem.

thanks jersey…and Vote For the Worst!

We have to watch the naked 12 year olds and the lame ass big band AGAIN?

  2. 2 Bouffe Nov 1st, 2007 at 12:23 pm

Damn, still gonna have to watch the kids and the girls.

Those two bands were definetely very middle of the pack, but I think there are other bands that should have gone before them. Oh well.

My favs are Clark Brothers and Sixwire, too. Wagner and the #7 was a fav, too.

Hmm. I missed it last week b/c I was in Philly. I can’t seem to recall either one of those bands. I guess no big loss. LOL.

Whoa, I’m surprised. I thought at least one of the generic pop/rock blands would stick around for awhile. They seemed to have the smuggest frontmen, too, so Ha! VFTW victory!

The Tower of Naked 12 Year Olds will probably cover that pre-pubescent up stuff this week, no? (please?)

It was reported at VFTW that the 12 year old metal heads indeed wore shirts. TG

Not sorry to see the Hatch getting the boot, but I liked the Likes of You! The non-pimped-early-release program marches on.

blacknite, this is a spoiler thread. The names are listed above. No need to PM. They are the Hatch and The Likes of You.

Too bad Geoff Byrd got voted off. I wasn’t crazy about the band, but I have one of his solo albums and think he’s pretty good. I think the fact that he was a solo artist under the guise of a band didn’t set well with the judges and lead to his band being the only one of the 12 not featured on that first show. I think that was the payback for cheating the system.

Anyway, as far as the show goes, I am sorely disappointed. I was looking forward to this so much, but it is clear AI saw that it was a dud and Fox buried it on Friday night with little fanfare in order to save AI the embarrassment of an AI-related failure. Both versions of Rock Star were far better, and that’s saying something. Even when the singers weren’t great, at least the backing band was top notch. There seems to be too much emphasis on back story and target audiences and too little emphasis on talent and songwriting.

This turned out to be a real bummer. This season will likely be shown in its entirety and then the show will be retired, and we’ll never get another attempt at a major musician-involved talent show again. Now I’m relegated to disco and Manilow covers for eternity.

The grannies and mums need to stop voting for those children there’s something not quite right about it all, just imo before the attacks start!

Awww, I kinda liked The Likes of You. I thought they had potential at least.

And Lisa - I agree with you.

YES!!!! I miss Rock Star a lot. There’s a writing campaign organized at rockbandlounge.com about bringing back the show. We’ve also started a Rock Star All Star game - it’s fun! Go check it out!

I just watched my recording. I can’t say that I’m sad to see either band go, especially the Hatch. I felt bad for the lead singer of the other band though.

Most of the Dylan covers sucked. Most of the originals sucked.

I think that the big band and the kids should have gone… or maybe the all girl band, Rocket. OMG. They will never be anywhere close to L7 or Le Tigre. And little miss lead singer, you are no Debbie Harry.

I think Dot Dot Dot needs to lose the lead singer.

I liked Franklin Bridge, but they were too busy.

I was disappoined with Tres Bien.

Clark Bros were awesome. I was digging the Old No 7’s, but not after their original and seeing the Clark Bros.

The Muggs have the backstory and they are pretty good, I guess. They will stay for awhile.

Livewire is very good. I think they are a little predictable though.

I found myself agreeing with the Aussie judge a lot.
