Gave a friend Taylor’s cd before Christmas, and she told me today she loves all of it and it is all she plays in her car. She loves to turn the bass up and rawk at red lights - and can’t wait to put the top down this summer and turn the volume up. She liked Taylor on AI, but wasn’t enough of a fan to even remember to watch the finale! So I count her a ‘new’ fan - and obviously a happy one.

    One fan at a time.

Kirsten, I never knew what AAA was until I saw that the radio station I listen to most is classified that way.

    http://www.wxrt.com/

    I think it’s adult alternative?

  3. 803 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:26 am

Right now they are playing Matisyahu…

  4. 804 vegasdee Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:26 am

    Adult Album Alternative

  5. 805 Debs Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:27 am

    Little Boy Blue,

I don’t understand what you mean about him striving to please his fans. The fans from Gray Charles overwhelmingly selected this song and overwhelmingly bought the Cd and intend to attend at least one concert. The “throwback” fans are supporting him anyway, even if he only “threw back” 20 yrs to the 80’s.

I agree most of these songs don’t fit neatly in the top 40, but the fans on both spectrums didn’t pick them. He did.

How does JTFTW bring in new fans. Is it the young kids that never heard a “soaring” pop ballad? Young women tired of the whiny winges of James Blunt and John Mayer? Maybe? How do young males connect to the high concept of the song? I don’t know. Do you?

  6. 806 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:28 am

Point is.. Matisyahu will never make POP radio, but he’s carved a niche for himself an is doing quite well.

One thing that bothers me is that in the last few weeks all anyone talks about is the numbers. That’s a limited view of success.

Taylor Hicks won AI. He can play music for the rest of his life and never have to work in a bank if he plays his cards right (and he will). Score!

    Just sayin…

As they say at TWOP–just SO MUCH word…

  8. 808 madaboutu Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:31 am

PJ…………where can I hear Matisyahu? Does he have a website, and what genre music is he?

  9. 809 vegasdee Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:32 am

MJ, have you seen the doc “Before The Music Dies”?

  10. 810 Debs Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:33 am

    MJ,

PJ, Lg and Lu are the Switzerland of this blog.

  11. 811 Kirsten Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:38 am

Debs: PJ, Lg and Lu are the Switzerland of this blog.

Hmmm….what country does that make “dingo”?

    Love you dingo, never change.

  12. 812 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:40 am

madaboutu, Matisyahu is a Jewish rapper. I don’t have a link, but I will look for one. I guess my point was more that he’s not mainstream but he’s still a success. :)

  13. 813 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:41 am

Can I be Norway? I’m 5/8 that way. They don’t cause much trouble either…:)

  14. 814 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:44 am
  15. 815 Debs Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:45 am

Absolutely PJ. I seriously I don’t know how MJ would sleep at night if you didn’t visit with your delightful voice of reason and open mind.

    Never change.

    Sweet dreams to everyone.

Just logged back on and saw Purple’s post.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I think about you often and miss you when you’re away. Check in whenever you can. There’s a lot of affection for you here.

  17. 817 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:47 am

Sweet dreams to you, too, Debs. I’m off to bed as well. :)

  18. 818 Kirsten Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:48 am

    Okay, wiki to the rescue:

AAA - Musical selection tends to be on the fringe of mainstream popular music and rock music as well as many other music genres such as alternative rock, alternative country, jazz, folk music, world music and blues. The musical selections tend to shy away from hard rock and rap music.

AC - plays mainstream contemporary pop music, excluding hip hop and hard rock

Hot AC - introduced in 1986 as a hybrid of Top 40 and oldies-based Adult Contemporary. New songs with sufficient adult appeal but weren’t too soft were mixed with popular oldies that weren’t too old. Today, Hot AC radio stations tend towards slightly harder rock music and may occasionally play dance hits

Interestingly, there is no BB AAA chart…heh….those acronyms work well together.

  19. 819 madaboutu Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:48 am

pj…………a Jewish rapper? That is interesting. I will Google him and see what I come up with. Thanks.

  20. 820 Metta Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:49 am

Debs - I used to live one block from that train station in Harlem. That was my stop. Thank you for the link to the story. Just beautiful. Good night and sweet dreams to you.

  21. 821 vegasdee Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:51 am

Before I go to bed all us haters can look foward to the day when Chris’s “It’s Not Over” will be on Kidz Bop 25. Good Night guys.

  22. 822 Metta Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:54 am

Kirsten - Thanks for the definitions. I’m still confused, though. Examples of songs that fit into each category would help me understand better. Maybe :)

  23. 823 sharon8 Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:55 am

Maybe Debs will see this about the subway hero tomorrow. What a great man.

    New York “Subway Superman” hailed

PJ: Point is.. Matisyahu will never make POP radio, but he’s carved a niche for himself an is doing quite well.

Just did a wiki search on him. He actually did have a Pop hit….”King Without Crown” was number 17 on the Pop Chart (28 on the Hot 100).

You never know who will pop up in Pop.

He’s also up for a Grammy award in the “Best Reggae Album” category. He has one platinum and two gold certifications.

  25. 825 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 1:57 am

    I’m off to bed.

madaboutu… I posted a link to a youtube video. Mix of rap, regge, and guitar.

Debs. You are too kind. :)

I’m now mad at the video I posted. It’s called Youth. Not Young Man. Ahem.

    Sigh.

    Good night!

  26. 826 pj Jan 5th, 2007 at 2:01 am

Kirsten, you rock! Anyone who checks facts rules in my book. goot for him. :)

    Night again!

    Metta:

Kirsten - Thanks for the definitions. I’m still confused, though. Examples of songs that fit into each category would help me understand better. Maybe :)

Let’s see what I can muster since I’m still trying to sort this out in my head…as an example….I will type out the artists in the Top 20 on each chart according to R&R (owned by BB).

AC Artists: Rascall Flatts, Natasha Bedingfield, Daniel Powter, Five For Fighting, KT Tunstall, Rod Stewart, Gnarls Barkley, John Mayer, Lionel Richie, Snow Patrol, Corinne Bailey Ray, Josh Groban, Nickelback, Tim McGraw, Gray, Bob Seger, Christine Aguilera, Rob Thomas, Eltion John, Jim Brickman.

Hot AC Artists: Fray, Snow Patrol, Hinder, John Mayer, Nickelback, Rob Thomas, Mat Kearney, KT Tunstall, Goo Goo Dalls, Evanescence, Augustana, Sone Sour, JoJo, All-American Rejects, Avril Lavigne, Christine Aguilera, Daughtry, Five For Fighting, All-American Rejects, Blue October

AAA Artists: (wiki does not provide a list but here’s who is in the top 20 this week): U2, Death Cab For Cutie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Norah Jones, Snow Patrol, Paolo Nutini, Eric Clapton, KT Tunstall, Amos Lee, Beck, Fray, Guster, Pete Yorn, Ray Lamontagne, John Mayer, Keane, Los Lonely Boys, Killers, Decemberists.

Although John Mayer and KT Tunstall appear on all three lists, it is not for the same songs. On AAA it is for “Belief” and “Other Side of the World”.

  30. 830 Metta Jan 5th, 2007 at 2:27 am

Kirsten - Thanks a million! Okay, now I get it.

  31. 831 madaboutu Jan 5th, 2007 at 2:35 am

pj……I know you’ve gone but thanks for the vid from youtube. I kind of liked it. Something new to me for sure.
Also, condolences to purplesmile and your family. I am sorry for the loss of your brother, who left you too soon.

I think Matisyahu is awesome. I’d say he’s more reggae than hip hop, but I love the mix of styles in his songs and the messages. It’s positive and affirming for the most part.

  35. 835 xoxoyc Jan 5th, 2007 at 7:29 am

    Big hugs to purple.

  36. 836 thedingoateyobaby Jan 5th, 2007 at 8:34 am
