Ok. I’m giving it another go. I’ll be shutting the site down at midnight tonight in order to move it to a bigger server!
The server change will be quick, but it might be a little while before you see my site again. It’s sort of like when you move. You have to tell everyone you know that you now live at another address. It’s the same on the internet, only in reverse. Nameservers have to “discover” that I’m living somewhere else now. Until then, they will point to the old server. I’ve made some changes to my configuration so that they find out the address change sooner rather than later, but these things can take time.
So be patient! By Saturday morning, I hope to be up and reachable by everyone.

I’ll be taking the site down at midnight. It’ll take me about an hour to get the other site up and running. At that time, the site will be available.
Between 12 - 1 am - Site will be down.
Between 1 - 1:30 - Site will come up. All I can say is try the URL. I can’t predict when the site will be available to individual people. It all depends on where you are, and how quickly your internet provider finds out that I’ve moved…
I wish I could be more precise that that. Hopefully, it will only be a few hours.
You should try Dynamic DNS (http://www.dyndns.com) for 25 bucks a year a change like this could be done instantaneously.
Oh, MJ, I know this has to be a big pain in the butt. Good thing that Friday nite is my no internet night, otherwise what would I do with my pitiful inner insomniac? Well, will check back in Saturday nite. Hopefully I will get my idol fix. No place like it in cyberspace.

I changed all my ttl’s to 60 seconds Wednesday night after the show. I’m hoping that does the trick.

It may not be so bad. I’m thinking of keeping both servers for now, and only moving the database to the new server. There would be no DNS changes to be made for that. But then, when traffic dies down in the summer, I’d have to make the change anyway. We’ll see…
moving just your database over to a new server should help all your issues. You are creating a mini cluster that way and will help you 10 fold. I am running my Idol Blog on a 5 server cluster with database and web separate from each other and other than a Denial of Service attack this last week I have sustained 650 concurrent connections with no issue at all.
Of course I don’t know your exact setup but I promise separating your web and database will give you a huge increase. I would however suggest making sure the web server has at least 1GB of RAM and the database server having at least 2GB of RAM. Also make sure whatever server is the beefier machine is the one running the database.
Good luck with the move, however you go about it. Your blog rocks :)
