REMINDER: If you are recording tonight’s show, don’t forget to set your VCRs and DVRs for 67 minutes! Tonight’s performance show starts at 8/7c pm and runs until 9:07/8:07c pm
ETA: Nigel Lythgoe confirms tonight’s theme. Also: He acknowledges, but claims he is not worried that the ratings are down, and he confirms that Taylor Hicks will be back to perform on the show.
Thanks to Idol Maniac from Idol Forums, we have some rumored song spoilers for this week. This week’s theme is “Songs That Have Inspired Gwen Stefani” rather than the very broad theme “Pop Songs” that was reported last week in the press.
LATEST UPDATE as of 5:18 EST:
You guys know how spoilers are. They can change. According to RickyHoeGuardian at IDF, the ORIGINAL list from yesterday was right on the money, “give or take a few small changes.”:
Blake Lewis - “Love Song” by the Cure and 311
Chris Richardson - “Don’t Speak” by No Doubt
Chris Sligh - “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” by the Police
Gina Glocksen - Pretenders ballad
Haley Scarnato - “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper
Jordin Sparks - “Hey Baby” by No Doubt
Lakisha Jones - Donna Summer song
Melinda Doolittle - Donna Summer song
Phil Stacey - “Every Breath You Take” by the Police
Sanjaya Malakar - “Bathwater” by No Doubt
The wardrobe and performance order and Ford Commercial are NOT yet confirmed…

You know, it didn’t even occur to me until I pulled out my Tragic Kingdom CD. I forgot entirely that No Doubt did have a song called “Sunday Morning”. I just spaced it entirely and assumed it was the Maroon 5 version since that was most recent, and well the spoilers say that it is the maroon 5 version, but I’ll bet it must be the No Doubt version.
It makes much, much more sense.
Me thinks spoilers are starting to sound a wee bit fishy…
I HOPE they’re fishy! I want Sanjaya to rock my world again, and I don’t like the thought of my wee sweetie getting picked on by the likes of Gwen.
I can not believe that Medinda will sing “Sunset People” by Donna Summer. After lurking for months on this site, I had to register to respond to this. Anyone who spent the late 70s / early 80s on a disco floor at 2am would know that classic song from Ms. Summer’s unforgettable concept album “Bad Girls.” Her breathy, sexy vocal over Giorgio’s pounding electronic beat was amazing. But considering the subject matter — night denizens of Sunset Blvd. — and its upbeat electronic music that does not provide a showcase for a vocalist — I find it hard to believe that Melinda is going to sing that song. BUT if she does sing it, and doesn’t get laughed off the stage, I don’t see how anyone would be declaring “BORING” song choice. I can’t say the same for Kiki’s selection of one of Ms. Summer’s more forgettable power ballads from the overappreciated “She Works Hard for the Money” album.
No, the producers pick the order depending, they say, on who does the best - for a closing song.
Idol Manic is a reputable spoiler, who has been one of the biggest contributers at IDF. Ricky even said he’s reputable and to cut him some slack. People are complaining cause 1. It’s not Ricky and 2. because they don’t like what he provided.
Some folks live their life with their head buried in the sand until they can deny no more…
I would be thrilled if they got to do the Carole King’s songs! That could be a great night! She’s got such a book to choose from.
They seem to protect certain people from that. Melinda has twice had the last spot and has not sung first once. Same with Chris D at this point in the competition last year (sang last on Top 10 Guys (top 20), but Gedeon sang first on Top 8 guys (top 16); sang last on Top 12 but Mandisa sang first the next week (Top 11). Chris did not sing 1st until Top 7 and he did get the last spot the next week).
rher, I tried to point that out earlier, especially since the new spoiler person has gone on to post a very ridiculous spoiler (about us voting tonight to include a rejectee on the tour with the top 10), but I don’t think anybody sees it.
No way is Nigel happy about the dip in ratings.
Oh no! Sanjaya is going to butcher a nice Maroon 5 song? Say it isn’t so!
I am less than thrilled they actually cleared Maroon 5 for Sanjaya.
I saw that, too. I didn’t think this could be possible, because you would think AI would by hyping The Huge Plot Twist if it were true. Plus, how workable would this be? I would think it would take away from the number of votes going to the 10 singers left. Idol Maniac (who posted the song spoiler) has been reliable, but has also posted some stuff that later was shown to be him just messing around. So, you never know. Heh, I think the spoiler speculation will prove to be more exciting than tonight’s show!
I’m sure Nigel isn’t thrilled about the ratings dip, but I believe him when he says he isn’t worried. The numbers are still monster numbers, and will make plenty of money for the people making money from the show. They would have to go way, way, way down for it to cause any real concern. AI has already bucked the trend by having ratings going up for five years in a row. A ratings dip is expected and part of the natural lifecycle of any show.
Blake picked another perfect song for him. He’s gonna rock. But why is he always in the beginning? Last week he had to go 4th, now 2nd? Melinda and LaKisha, I really hope their choices are wrong. Jordin’s could be weird too. This night is not looking like it’s gonna be good, I hope I’m pleasantly surprised.
Yeah, I don’t think Nigel is losing any sleep over the decline in the ratings. They couldn’t continously keep gaining ratings…well maybe the could if this was a better season. :)
Kirsten, as always, thank you for the history. Seems some contestants really do get favored treatment.
I don’t believe the producers always choose “the best” performance to go last - nor do I believe they should. There’s an obvious advantage to performing late on the show, and that advantage should be carefully distributed among the contestants on a fair basis. If the show really is a competition, as we are lectured every week, the competitive integrity of the show should count for something.
Yes, I AM that naive.
I don’t think the pimp spot means nearly as much as people seem to believe. They don’t open the phones until all of the performances have been recapped. If Sanjaya was last, there is no way I would vote for him (bless his cute little soul) just because he was last. Anyone that is going to actually pick up the phone and cast a vote or multiple votes already has a vested interest in someone, no matter what spot they are in.
I’m gonna go ahead and assume that they put him in the beginning for my benefit, on account of the fact that I can’t concentrate until I’ve had my plaid for the evening, which renders the other performances pretty much useless until I’ve seen Blake.
Of course, I’m pretty distracted POST-Blake as well, so maybe it has nothing to do with me.
jokiebird, I hear what you are saying, but I still think there are some real advantages to the pimp spot, or a late appearance. One, it IS easier to remember a good performance that comes late in the show v. one that comes earlier. Especially at this point in the Season, when ten people are performing.
Two, the judges are conditioned to go overboard with praise later in the show. For example, Simon will trot out his “You’re in a different league; all the others sounded like amateurs” line only at the end of the show. In Top 12 Girls Week this season, if LaKisha had given the same performance early in the show, it would have been less highly praised simply because it was early.
Not everyone is going to capitalize on the advantage of going last, but it’s an opportunity that should be parcelled out as fairly as possible, IMO.
Here, Here! I think I’ll go fold some laundry when she takes the stage.
I’m only looking forward to what Blake, Chris R. and Jordin have in store for us tonight.
Chris S. never has and never will do a thing for me.
As for Sanjaya, well he’s good for giggle at least.
SODF….maybe. I’d be interested to figure out a way to chart position vs. performance since the beginning of AI.
I do agree with you that it should be parceled out fairly, at the very least for nothing but appearances sake.
I’ve never kept track but I’ve always thought that the worst spots were second and third. A great performance right out of the gate remains memorable.
Having said that, it’s only a 1 hr, 7 minute show tonight and so singing early isn’t as big a disadvantage as it would be during a 2-hour show.
Jan4, I also saw your note re: the 6 rejected idols that have a chance to join the tour. I’m going to remain very skeptical. I’m not an IDF historian, so who knows if this “IM” has some scoop or is some whacky 16 year old with too much time (okay, so maybe I do too! hmph!).
MJ, what do you make of this?
Ricky said the performance order is wrong. I’m glad, Blake should go near the end and Sligh and Melinda should be near the front, they were the last two last week right? Apparently Chris R, Haley, Phil, Blake, and Jordin’s songs are confirmed to be correct.
Idol Maniac has spoiled correctly in the past.
However, I don’t believe the “twist” story to be true. If Idol was doing a twist, the show would have been longer, and the “surprise” would have been teased ahead of time.
I’ll probably wind up editing some of the stuff I have posted already in a bit.
Dang, I’ve been WAITING for BLAKE to sing Sunday Morning.
I’m looking forward to Haley and Jordin, as usual.
I’m curious about Chris S.
The rest, eh.
Pretty sure Ricky said Sanjaya’s actually singing “Bathwater.”
“Blake Lewis - “Love Song”
Chris Richardson - “Don’t Speak”
Chris Sligh - “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”
Gina Glocksen - Pretenders ballad
Haley Scarnato - “True Colors”
Jordin Sparks - “Hey Baby”
Lakisha Jones - Donna Summers song
Melinda Doolittle - Donna Summers song
Phil Stacey - “Every Breath You Take”
Sanjaya Malakar - “Bathwater”
expect to see this type to be truth. Wardrobe is all wrong, order is wrong, gwen comments are wrong, his newer sanjaya/melinda/lakisha/gina song choices were wrong — revert back to the list above, the original. His twist was wrong. His first post of song spoilers though, was right.”
That’s Ricky’s latest post from IDF, MJ :)
Thanks MJ and jnd1221! Wish there weren’t so many No Doubt songs, but perhaps Gwen wants people to go back and buy some music of the boys she left behind.
She didn’t leave them behind. They are going to be doing another album when she’s done with this tour.
What oxymoron to the third power was Gwen Stefani as “Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms” on last night, Fashion and Song trendsetting of her customary genre tonight, and her taste in music as reflected in Gwen’s favorites, that simply are unexplainable, even if you buy in to an individual’s diverse and broad musical favorites? Her advice was almost as ridiculous as the non-advice of the iconic Diana Ross, who is forgiven by me gratice based on her music industry legend status, so rightfully earned. Gwen has not even aproximated longevity legend rights. Gwen’s new label or album title should be “spoiler
