Blake was awesome! He really took a risk, especially with such a well known song…and it paid off!

JT Lite…I think he hurt my dog’s ears (and mine, obviously). He should have picked a different song.

  2. 52 HollandX May 1st, 2007 at 9:07 pm

The reason why Blake’s song was perfect was because he didn’t touch the chorus. THAT’s the part everyone knows, and THAT’s the part everyone wants to sing along to. He didn’t alter the chorus. Amazing rendition.

  3. 53 Nostradamas May 1st, 2007 at 9:10 pm

OK, I guess a “gimmick” is supposed to be a substitute for a total lack of range, dynamic, tune and tone.

Blake, you amateur, this isn’t 1997, drop the cutsie, gimmicky crap and GO HOME! “Shut thu the hot” ain’t the words, loser.

Anyway, on to the other’s who can actually sing.

Phil, surprised me, but still is going home.

Jordin, don’t do that again….none of it worked.

Lakisha, sang a ballad….who would have guessed? Missed 2-3 words all together and slurred even more. Buh Bye to you too.

Blake, why is he still here?!?! ‘SUCKS’ poster boy.

Chris, did a more than respectable job, but he ain’t no Jon / Daughtry.

Melinda, as close to great as anyone, but her voice and “rocker chic” don’t mix…..but still the “Resident Pro”.

  4. 54 RollTide May 1st, 2007 at 9:15 pm

Blake blew me away. Best performance ever. What time is his download gonna be up tomorrow? :clap_tb:

  5. 55 panz May 1st, 2007 at 9:22 pm

At this stage of the competition, almost nothing will change my mind. The three I like, I thought were all good to great, as usual. The three I don’t like, not so good tonight.

  6. 56 maracaibo May 1st, 2007 at 9:23 pm

Hey for the people who liked Blake can yo guys vote too?
People will assume he is safe and he might get voted off.
    Just saying.

  7. 57 longsong May 1st, 2007 at 9:28 pm

The two that stood out for me tonight are Lakisha and Melinda. EXCELLENT!! I actually, FINALLY felt Lakisha for the first time in a long time. She got me all verklempt even.

And I love Melinda. Yes, I know she’s boring because she’s always perfection, but STILL.

As for the rest: Jordon was so meh. That’s two weeks in a row now. Of course, she has those two lovely rows of teeth and will be staying. Sigh. I’m kinda over her.

Phil was good! I just don’t know what it is about him. Maybe it’s the way his upper lip disappears when he smiles. I would prefer him to be super ugly or something because I just can’t put my finger on what bugs me about him. You know how all those dentists offered to fix Elliott’s teeth for him - and they did? Maybe the Hair Club for Men will do the same thing for Phil. Maybe THAT’S what’s bugging me.

Blake is cute, I can absolutely see his charm, but I would never, ever buy a cd with beatboxing on it. I like it better when he just sings. Sorta.

Chris: I forgot he was even still in the competition. I HATE how he leans down towards the camera and moves his head back and forth while he talks at me. And I do not like that song! I did not like it when teeny tiny daughtry did it, and I certainly didn’t like it this year. It’s overly self indulgent. Wanted Dead or Alive? You ain’t that important to me, baby.

    My rankings:

    1. Lakisha
    2. Melinda
    3. Blake
    4. Phil
    5. Jordin
    6. Chris

  8. 58 ericalina May 1st, 2007 at 9:33 pm

i wish i liked blake more. i guess i would if he could actually sing.

    my rankings:

    1) melinda (can this girl NOT do anything??)
    2) lakisha (a really soulful version of an underrated JBJ song!)
    3) phil (i like the sound of phil’s voice a lot. wish he did “bed of roses” instead!)
    4) blake (ballsy, yes. singing voice, no)
    5) jordin (karaoke - and bad at that!)
    6) chris r (how come no one called him out on forgetting the lyrics? pretty unacceptable at this point).

  9. 59 longsong May 1st, 2007 at 9:40 pm

    6) chris r (how come no one called him out on forgetting the lyrics? pretty unacceptable at this point).

I agree. And I think this is the second time he’s done that.

  10. 60 Metta May 1st, 2007 at 9:52 pm

    1. (tie) LaKisha and Phil were the very best of the night. Phil was a surprise. His continued survival has been a mystery to me. Tonight, I’d say he deserved his place. In a weak season, he shines. LaKisha knocked it out of the park. What an emotionally authentic performance. Esp, when many–herself included–wrote her off. If there’s any justice in AI land (there isn’t), she’ll survive the cut this week.

    3. Melinda was very good, but she’s still boring. *yawns*

    4. Chris has never done anything for me, and that didn’t change tonight. BUT at least he sang the entire song, unlike…

    5. I like Blake’s beatboxing in small doses, but it does appear that he used it to distract from the fact that his vocals are only adequate. It is a bit like someone being allowed to play an instrument in lieu of singing. Plus, you could tell Bon Jovi hated what he did to the song.

    6. Jordin - Complete and utter disaster. She should be voted off twice for laying this egg.

  11. 61 Sarah May 1st, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Longsong, this is more than the second time Chris has forgotten lyrics I do believe. I think the question is, has he EVER gotten the lyrics completely right? lol

  12. 62 bean99 May 1st, 2007 at 9:53 pm

Loved, loved, loved Blake tonight! My husband did too so it’s not just the fangirly ones, lol. I thought he was the best of the night. What happened to Jordin tonight? She was bad. I wasn’t that keen on Melinda tonight but Phil & Lakisha were both pretty good.

  13. 63 Sarah May 1st, 2007 at 9:56 pm

Chris has never done anything for me, and that didn’t change tonight. BUT at least he sang the entire song,

Sure, he sang the song. He also screwed up the words and changed the melody of the song, all the while screaming and straining his voice so much that if I had a cat, it would have been crying. In fact, I think I DID hear some animal outside crying for their mate…

My roommate, who watches American Idol as a guilty pleasure and laughs at me for voting all night on Tuesdays, said after Blake’s performance “I’d buy that track!”, then proceeded to cast a few text votes for him. I’d say that pretty much speaks volumes.

  14. 64 Sarah May 1st, 2007 at 10:01 pm

    Nostradamus,

I’d say when you put your OPINIONS out there, ANYONE is FREE to comment on them.

  15. 65 AlwaysElliott May 1st, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    My faves:
    Phil, Blake and Melinda

Jordin - not so good, but wow, I really like her!

Chris - UGH I can’t figure out why the judges like him so much….

I think its anybody’s guess who’s going home tomorrow.

  16. 66 RollTide May 1st, 2007 at 10:07 pm

BTW, Nostradamus, you included Blake in your list of people “who can actually sing.” :)

Hey for the people who liked Blake can yo guys vote too?”

I did! Loved Blake’s performance tonight. Also liked Lakisha, Phil and Melinda. Best night so far of AI6, and Jon was a great mentor, imo.

  18. 68 bamatt May 1st, 2007 at 10:10 pm

Blake kicked everyone’s butt tonight. I agree he was smart to not mess with the chorus but what he added was killer. I would go out & buy his version tomorrow. That was amazing!!!!!

  19. 69 longsong May 1st, 2007 at 10:11 pm

Sarah: Chris’ constant lack of preparation both for working with mentors and for performances is a complete slap in the face. And a lazy slap at that. What a sloppy guy. What, does he have more important things to do?

I’m bummed that tonight’s votes will be combined with last weeks votes, because it’ll probably mean that Lakisha will be going home along with Chris even though she had an exceptionally strong night.

If I had my choice, Chris and Jordin would both be waving “bye” tomorrow night. As it is, I have a feeling we’ll be saying goodbye to Chris and Lakisha, darn the luck.

  20. 70 idol fan May 1st, 2007 at 10:13 pm

Blake was Awesome, Simon Kissed Lakisha, Phil wasn’t bad, Jordin Sucked, but I like her, Melinda “Shrek” was great. What a weird night. Say Bye to Chris Richardson, and one more..probably Phil Stacey even though he did a good job.

  21. 71 t2 May 1st, 2007 at 10:17 pm

And I too wish that we could vote Jordin off twice. That was blasphemy.

Phil completely tore down the rafters. He was awesome. Jon BJ, you were absolutely spot on with your praise of this. Should have had the pimp spot with that performance.

Simon is full of … ummm … hot air, and I guess TPTB must really want to send Phil home…can someone remind them it’s a singing competition please.

Also loved Lakisha. Blake was fun. The rest were either a train wreck or forgettable. Please don’t let Melinda sing Bon Jovi again.

  22. 72 St.Lucia May 1st, 2007 at 10:17 pm

Blake was excellent tonight. I really, really enjoyed it. the thing about it, be it less singing than others or not, he was ENGAGING. I was drawn into it. I was hooked. I was surprised and as someone stated, he didn’t change the most memorable part of the song, the chorus. I really, really enjoyed. As did my husband. I think that may be the second performance he has actually enjoyed this entire season, and he’s usually the “Don’t ever touch the original” kind of guy, but he thought what Blake did wasn’t a bad copycat version of the original. He made it good.

I still thought Lakisha was dead to the world. I mean she tried to muster up some passion….but well…I didn’t feel it. And her outfit…was not so good on top of it all.

I’m not even going to talk about Chris, because I couldn’t take it so I muted it pretty quickly after he started butchering it.

Melinda was good, but when isn’t she?

Jordin was a MESS. I wasn’t sure how on earth she was going to manage this song, but she didn’t mange it well, I also think that her being flanked by two guitar players made her feel awkward as well as looking quite awkward.

I enjoyed Phil. He actually breathed a little life into it. Now if only I could get the same out of Lakisha.

If I were to make a guess I’d still bet as Chris and Lakisha being the two to go.

I think Phil has had some strong last couple of weeks so he will be safe.

  23. 73 RenaRF May 1st, 2007 at 10:32 pm

BLAKE LOVERS - Hopefully you know I’m definitely not a Blake hater and I try to be objective… So here’s what I have to say about tonight’s Blake performance.

First, if you listen back (don’t watch, just listen) you’ll hear that his vocal was just ok. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. What Blake did especially well was recognize WAY in advance that he would have to work this week’s music because this week’s music didn’t work naturally for him. Having said that, this IS still a singing competition and not a creatively-obscuring-the-singing competition and he was far down the list, vocally, from Melinda, Phil and Lakisha. The good news is on vocals alone, he was far UP the list from both Jordin and Chris R.

And not for nothing - I’m a HUGE Taylor fan and he wasn’t the best singer last season (I think I would give that to Elliott, frankly - a natural gift) but he knew how he could shine and he chose those moments thoughtfully and carefully. So I’m not taking anything away from Blake - I just think the repeated “HE WAS AWESOME DAMNIT” mantra is overselling the actual performance a tad.

Here’s where I ranked them tonight:

    Melinda Doolittle
    Phil Stacey
    Lakisha Jones
    Blake Lewis
    Chris Richardson
    Jordin Sparks

The first three are bunched together for me. Blake holds the middle solidly. The bottom two were WAY below everyone else.

Blake- Awesome job. Very original. He’s interesting and very comtemporary-someone everyone would love to hear on the radio. Should be the final 2 left in the end if people are smart and actually vote.

Jordin-Gurl, bad song choice. Only the chorus was good. But she’s awesome and I think she should definitely stay on a while.

Phil- He’s really gotten better and improved over the last 2 weeks. Impressed. Hope he stays around at least one or two more rounds.

Chris- CUTIE!!!!! :) BUT, he’s not showing off his talent therefore he’s getting boring and I hate it but I believe he’ll be gone soon.

LAKESHA- WHOOOO. SHE CAN SING!!! She’s like a Whitney Houston. She’s never had training and she still sounds better than Melinda. She has more tones and can sounds different and interesting.

Melinda- I have nothing againt Melinda b/c she’s nice but she looks like a troll, sounds the same in EVERY song (boring), Only sings and sounds good when singing old songs, BUT she does have a power house of a voice (FROM TRAINING ALL THOSE YEARS). I know that Melinda will stay around for a lil while BUT, I HONESTLY don’t see her having any good contemporary songs out on the radio. She’s only good at older songs and Jazz. HONESTLY NO ONE will want to hear that on the radio.

  27. 77 Allen May 1st, 2007 at 10:38 pm

Melinda was, again, easily the best of the night for me. Loved it.

    I agree 100%

Blake’s performance was just WOW! I would buy it NOW!
Excuse me, I am going to keep voting for him

  29. 79 Stefunny May 1st, 2007 at 11:25 pm

Wow! Except for the giant sinkhole Jordin landed in, BonJovi night was a nice surprise.

    My rankings:

Melinda — Awesome! Is there nothing she can’t sing? I totally called the Tina Turner vibe before Randy mentioned it. And way to go out of her comfort zone with pizazz!

Phil — Too bad he was first. I hope he isn’t overlooked b/c of it. He did a great job with a perfect song for his voice. Love that BonJovi thought it was stellar, too.

Blake — What a fun performance! Yeah so he didn’t sing the entire time but he had charisma and did justice with his arrangement of one of the most famous BonJovi songs ever.

    space

Lakisha — So she sang it nicely but it was still a power ballad and she sang it like a gospel song from church. Snore.

Chris — Hate this song and even though I was a big Daughtry fan, didn’t like it then either. He brought nothing new to the table and the backlighting was just horrible.

    huge space

Jordin — really, really bad from hair to outfit to singing…she tanked big time.

  30. 80 cricket May 1st, 2007 at 11:37 pm

I was pleasantly surprised at tonights performances , I was expecting a disaster and the night wasn’t horrible at all.
    My ratings for tonight :
    1. Melinda , she is so in a league of her own in the competition. She has been steady as a rock .
    2. Phil , this guy has a great voice ( too bad Simon is trying his best to get him voted off)
    3. Blake , made up for his shortcomings by becoming ” Blake the entertainer” . He was refreshing.
4.Lakisha , good pipes but something is lacking.Simon done his best to save her tonight.
    5. Chris did a decent job but was out of his comfort zone.
    6. Jordin , poor girl , it was just plain bad. Didn’t care for her performance last week either but the sympathy vote and some major pimping by TPTB will save her.

Simon wants Phil and Chris gone , will he get his way ???

  31. 81 rsamz May 1st, 2007 at 11:39 pm

So, Lakisha, Phil and Blake were excellent tonight, I was blown away, and that’s the first time I can really say that this whole season. I hope none of these three are going home tomorrow night.

I absolutely cannot stand Chris Richardson’s singing, it is so nasal, and he just didn’t have the rough, manly factor that “Dead or Alive” needs. I think after Chris Daughtry sang it last season, it should’ve been retired from the repetoire. I hope he is gone tomorrow.

Melinda is excellent, but she’s the same every week, she never seems to put anything new to her performances.

And, although Jordin’s vocals are really, really good, I think she was completely outshown tonight.

  32. 82 t2 May 1st, 2007 at 11:42 pm

So, Lakisha, Phil and Blake were excellent tonight, I was blown away, and that’s the first time I can really say that this whole season. I hope none of these three are going home tomorrow night.

And that would be my top three right there…

I love that Jon Bon Jovi was SQUEEing over Phil’s performance. That made my whole season.

  33. 83 weelassie May 2nd, 2007 at 1:17 am

Just rewatched the show. It was quite a night. Jon Bon Jovi is one good looking guy. Loved how he was pulling for KiKi.

My order in which some of them are interchangeable:

Blake-loved that he took a risk. He actually looks good with dark hair. He isn’t the BEST singer, but he is the best entertainer of this group. He holds your attention as you don’t know what he will do next.

Melinda-she makes me smile for some reason and the girl can sing. She is so professional and so likeable.

Lakisha-finally a mentor she connected with. The girl has pipes. Loved the kiss from Simon.

Phil-he looks cadaverous but can really sing. He has done well the last few weeks. I think Lakisha and Phil were both equally good.

Chris-sorry, i haven’t liked him from day one but he was a smidge better than Jordin who stank.

Jordan-stank up the joint yet, dial idol has her in first place. go figure. Jordin and Chris are pretty interchangeable except that she is usually pretty good and he is usually awful.

So based on tonight alone-bottom 2 Jordin and Chris.
Who will go home - chris and either Phil or LaKisha because of last week.
who should go home - jordin (for this week) and Chris for last week.

  34. 84 mosheeaka May 2nd, 2007 at 3:04 am

Phil “Blaze of Glory”- Simon should have saved his “You’re a kitten trying to be a tiger” for Phil. Randy and Paula loved it but I thought it was a karoeke mess.

Jordin “Living On a Prayer”- Most difficult Bon Jovi song to sing. Dressed the part. I liked seeing her have fun, but clearly she picked a song that was too big for her. It was a mess. She can afford a bad week after last week. Didn’t think it was as bad as the judges thought.

LaKisha “This isn’t ain’t a love song” - Her best performance since “And I am telling you”. She did amazing and the judges love it. Great job. Better than Bon Jovi’s version.

Blake Lewis “You give love a bad name”- Changed up the arrangement, beatboxed. Really quirky and original version. I didn’t like it but the judges went googoo over it and praised him with comments.

Chris Richardson “Dead or Alive” – This song should be off-limits after Chris Daughtery’s version. Once again, Paula and Randy loved it. Simon told him it was as good as he could do with it. I didn’t like it at all. I guess I have higher standards when it comes to these songs than the judges. Maybe because I’ve heard of them before.

Melinda Doolittle “Have a nice day”- Upbeat, typical Melinda performance. However, like the typical Melinda performance she sang a song that is not very popular and that I have never heard before. I don’t know if I’ve ever heard any song she has sung before other than Heaven Knows. Simon called her a young Tina Turner.

    Bottom 3: Jordin, LaKisha, Chris

    Going Home: LaKisha and Chris.

I think one of the divas is going home.. However it is convenient that they picked the night most people vote, the Idols give back week, as a week tailor made for the divas. Then followed it with a non-diva friendly week. Still, LaKisha kicked butt and it is going to sad to see her go

Random thought: Laura Bush at the end…. I think she gets botox… and is on Xanex
