Top 7 – Idols At the Movies – What Should the Idols Sing?

Problem with this week’s theme, “Idols at the Movies” is that it’s very broad.   In the past, the theme has not only included songs on soundtracks, but any song that’s appeared in any movie at any time.

In other words, this theme is about as broad as the “Any song that’s been downloaded by anybody at anytime” theme of   a couple of weeks ago.

Oh song Gods, please help the kids choose a little more creatively than they did the last time…

What I’m really looking forward to, is film director, Quentin Tarantino, mentoring the kids.   Anybody who remembers his stint as a guest judge during Season 3′s movie week, knows Quentin can be hilarious, but also doesn’t pull punches, so this should be good.

You first. I spent nearly all day finishing up my income taxes and am now too depressed to even contemplate what the Idols should sing this week. I’ll edit in my choices later today.

ETA:

I didn’t rip this idea off of Mara Johnson, I’ve been thinking all day about creating a list of songs from Tarentino soundtracks.   Not that it will happen, but it would be cool:

  • Adam Lambert – “Street Life” by Randy Crawford – Jackie Brown – Dancerific! – VIDEO
  • Allison Iraheta – “Baby it’s You” by Smith – Death Proof – Allison, getting all torch!   VIDEO – or Maura’s selection, Maria McKee’s “If Love is a Red Dress” from Pulp FictionVIDEO
  • Anoop Desai – “Strawberry Letter 23″ by Brothers Johnson - Jackie Brown - Imagine Anoop’s smooth vocals wrapping around this – VIDEO
  • Danny Gokey – “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa Esmerelda – Kill Bill – A plea to all who criticize his dead wife pimping ways. – VIDEO
  • Kris Allen – I’m in agreeance with Maura here: “Lonesome Town” by Ricky Nelson – Pulp Fiction – Watch the fangirls swoon! -Â   VIDEO
  • Lil Rounds – “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green – Pulp Fiction – An opposite gender pick might help Lil escape the karaoke label. Or, she could just butcher it. – VIDEO
  • Matt Giraud – “The Love You Save (may be your own) – by Joe Tex – Fits right into that cozy R&B box the judges built– just for Matt… – VIDEO.
  • Tracy

I was reading Ryan Seacrest’s twitter and this is what he posted:

RyanSeacrest idol theme this week honoring iconic songs from cinema. tarantino mentor, love that dude

    How does Idol define “iconic”?

  • thesheriff

I have no idea – except I wonder if someone will do Over the Rainbow.

Lil or Anoop should do Staying Alive….and to humor me, Adam could do Purple Rain.

  • http://www.myspace.com/rjveritas MrRJ

My guess is there will be a list of no more than 20 songs that have been cleared. What sounds like an almost unlimited catagory will be quietly severely limited.

  • ratmgirlly

I would love it if Adam did toxic love from ferngully. I know it’s a wierd choice but oh well.

  • jumpstart

As long as no one sings “Against All Odds”, I’m good.

  • hardkandy

the thing i like about Adam is i can’t suggest just one song for him coz he can pull off so many songs, he can pull off almost any song. he can sing whatever the hell he wants, go surprise me Adam! :)

  • abbysee

These broad themes make choosing difficult. I wish there was a list we could cull from. I do know that Allison and Adam have a knack for picking good songs. The others not so much. Quentin will make this week for me no matter what they sing. It will be epic. Guaranteed.

  • DavidD11

I thought Tarantino was an annoying douche on the show back in season 3. I don’t know why he is coming back on. His comment on Diana was overly harsh and didn’t really have any basis. What credibility does he have again? Anyways, I think Adam or Allison could bring the house down with “Bring Me To LIfe.” I think LIl should AVOID I Would Always Love you. I know the judges loved it in Hollywood but it was a mess. She would be better with maybe something like “Listen” from Dreamgirls… still very token black diva but something we at least haven’t heard before on the show.

  • Kobayashi Maru

Danny – “Wind Beneath My Wings” (Beaches)

Anoop – “Ol’ Man River” (Showboat)

Kris – “Mrs. Robinson” (The Graduate)

Matt – “All I Want is You” (Reality Bites)

Lil – “What a Feeling” (Flashdance)

Allison – “Born to be Wild” (Easy Rider)

Adam – “Streets of Philadelphia” (Philadelphia), [ETA: although for various reasons this would never happen, so more realistically...

    "Somewhere" (West Side Story)]

    BONUS ALTERNATE UNIVERSE PICK:

Scott – “The Wrestler” (“Have you ever seen a one trick pony in the field so happy and free?…”)

  • hardkandy

Adam – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Streets of Philadelphiaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ (Philadelphia), [ETA: although for various reasons this would never happen, so more realisticallyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

tha’s such a beautiful song and the movie always makes me cry…

  • Kobayashi Maru

Damn, I forgot “Somewhere” had been done before… and so authoritatively, too.

So I’ll take that back for Adam and suggest he go back up-tempo and sing “Live and Let Die”.

  • mrcritic1980

    My song suggestions:

    Adam:
“Live and Let Die” (Live and Let Die)
    “Stayin’ Alive” (Saturday Night Fever)
“Suicide Is Painless” (M*A*S*H) – Manic Street Preachers cover.

    Alison
“I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” (Armageddon)
“Take My Breath Away” (Top Gun)
    “Uninvited” (City of Angels)

    Anoop
    “It Might Be You” (Tootsie)
    “Jai Ho” (Slumdog Millionaire)
    “Patience” (Dreamgirls)

    Danny
    “Everybody’s Talkin’” (Midnight Cowboy)
    “Go The Distance” (Hercules)
    “Moon River” (Breakfast at Tiffany’s)

    Kris
    “Falling Slowly” (Once)
    “Mrs. Robinson” (The Graduate)
“The Rainbow Connectiomn” (The Muppet Movie) – Jason Mraz’s cover.

    Lil
    “Flashdance” (Flashdance)
“Let the River Run” (Working Girl)
    “Love You I Do” (Dreamgirls)

    Matt
    “As Time Goes By” (Casablanca)
“Can You Feel The Love Tonight” (The Lion King)
“Up Where We Belong” (An Officer and a Gentleman)

  • hypertwink

I think I’m more excited for Quentin than for the contestants. He was a riot when he guested the last time, and was even more of a dick than Simon. Anyway, iconic just probably means that it has to be a well-known song from a well-known, stood-the-test-of-time movie.

It probably means that Superman’s Can You Read My Mind or Titanic’s My Heart Will Go On is probably on the short list. It won’t be The Climb from Hannah Montana since 1) well…Hannah Montana, and 2) Miley will probably sing it during the results show.

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if many movie musicals come up. West Side Story, A Chorus Line, Chicago…

  • molls

    Long time reader-lurker here.

I’m not sure what the exact rules are for what they’ll allow for “iconic songs from cinema”, but “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing” by Chris Isaac was in Eyes Wide Shut.

I think Adam would absolutely KICK ASS with this song! In fact, his voice has sometimes reminded me of Chris Issac, with his strong lower register and stellar falsetto…

  • Valentin432

FWIW, there have been two movie week on AI in season 2 and 3, the songs were: season 2 and season 3

Two songs I hope no one will pick that were perfromed on both shows:
Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now): both times they oppened the show with this (C. Clark S2/ G. Huff S3)
I Have Nothing: performed on both shows (Trenyce S2/ J. Hud S3).

It’s curious that the producers didn’t come back to this theme until now, these have been some of the better shows of S2 and 3, both winners gave great performances these nights (Whole New Wolrd/Summertime).

If Megan was there she definetly should sing the song from her audition…

Oooh, good call. It’s not desperately hard to sing and it’s a real showstopper if you can pull it off. It practically won X-Factor for Alexandra Burke last year.

(and by the way, anyone who considers Adam is being pimped should take a look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kE0a2UdPO-I cos he ain’t got nothin’ on Alexandra. In that one performance she had the dry ice of pimpage, the wind machine of pimpage, the pyrotechnics of pimpage, twinkling background stars and rotating backlighting of pimpage AND a full 4-judge standing O. Beat that! :laugh_tb:)

If she could manage to stay on pitch for once I could see Lil making up some lost ground with that.

My guess is there will be a list of no more than 20 songs that have been cleared. What sounds like an almost unlimited catagory will be quietly severely limited.

Yeah, I’d put money on that unfortunately. And if there are more than 2 or 3 songs that haven’t been done before on the show at one time or another I will be very surprised. I am fully expecting “Against All Odds” to rear its ugly, dated head for starters :dry_tb:

  • hypertwink

Yes, I have been trying to figure out what expertise Tarantino has in music.

Probably just as much expertise, if not more, than the 4 people who pretend to judge every week. He may be a douche but Tarantino has a more current music taste. His being a director gives him a different perspective — about how you use both aural and the visual to showcase your image as an artist/performer. And at the very least, he can enrich the vocabulary from the usual “dawg” and”package artist.”

  • rita205

My immediate thought for Adam was one of the songs from Elvis’s early movies – like Love me Tender, or Viva Las Vegas. Probably too theatrical. But those who are saying that he is reminiscent of Elvis are thinking of that early Elvis, the one of the cheesy 60′s movies.

  • Buderschnookie

Yes, I have been trying to figure out what expertise Tarantino has in music. Perhaps thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s something I missed? Will TPTB hint that certain contestants need some backlashing?

Tarantino is widely regarded as having an encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and how it both influences and reflects popular culture. He really seems to be able to key into what is happening in music now as well as predicting future trends, and I think he makes a far better mentor than those that just nod their heads and say “______ will do great”.

I won’t predict specifics, but only hope that the same old same old aren’t drug out yet again. I want songs that I haven’t heard in a bit but that still perk up my ears with great memories. If they can do that with a bit of individual spin I am good.
Please God nothing we have heard on Idol before- it is tedious IMO and 100% lazy thinking.

Now as far as Adam, I want another RoF WTF full on show. He’s solid in his standing and now is the time to give it to us full blast.

I want to see and hear whatever it is that he wants to show me. :clap_tb: :thumbup_tb:

I also want him to go first so the shock has time to settle a bit before voting begins and we can all stop with the “over pimping” talk.
Probably not likely, but I think it would make for an amazingly energized show (as opposed to last weeks snoozefest) and force all the rest of them to up their game, which some of them desperately need to do.

  • http://www.myspace.com/swood1104 Sarah

Oh, Against All Odds will be sung. My money’s on Lil or Matt.

Also, unless Lil does “My Heart Will Go On,” I’m not seeing it being sung this year. Hopefully.

I could see Danny attempting “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing.” Hahaha.

  • chessguy99

I’d like Allison to tackle a Jim Steinman song. My wildest dream come true would be Tonight is What it is to be Young, from Streets of Fire. I’d settle for Holding Out for a Hero, from Footloose. Both are big songs songs that require powerful vocals and sound great if done right. Her Telemundo clips of Total Eclipse of the Heart, shows she is able to handle that type of song, plus Simon will give her major props as he loves when a contestant nails an epic song.

  • t2

This I absolutely agree with. I feel really, really bad for any contestant who is not in the choosen one category. They are going to get dumped on during their mentoring session and crucified during the judges comments.

I’ll be watching Biggest Loser and DVRing ai so I can fast forward through all of the audience manipulation/judges comments/tarantino completely biased rants. I’m hoping if I skip over all of that, it will bring back some love I have for this show.

    Song choices:
I’d really like to see Anoop sing something acapella (although I am sure they will be harping on him to do something “upbeat”)

I think Total Eclipse of the Heart would be good for Allison and Kris needs to go back to his roots this week (R&B) so he doesn’t lose the fan base he has gained. Although when the judges get rid of Anoop this week, I think Kris will get Anoop’s voters (the ones that will still watch the show).

I’d love to see Adam tackle Christopher Cross who has a lot of soundtrack music.

I also think if !!Gokey!! went completely inspirational this week, he could have a moment.

  • Layla

Love me some QT. His broad and amazing knowledge of pop culture, (current and historical) music and film is phenemonal. He can be very ADHD, which can be annoying to some but I love him and his films…every single one.

My daughters, 16 and 19, (both of whom hate AI but have been “encouraged” to watch vids of DC and Adam-Adam wins by a country mile) came up with some interesting choices for Adam:

Terry Reid’s “Seeds f Memory” from the movie Devils Rejects, which was sung over the closing credits-brilliant song

Danny Boy done a la Jackie Wilson (Mom ¨’s influence) has been used in many many movies. Again, a brillan version of the song and Adam would be briliant singing this and have a WTF moment! Hee.

I also agree that Toxic Love from Fern Gilly would be cool for Adam to do.

  • http://mypianoo.livejournal.com MyPiano

    Kris – Blower’s Daughter.
    Allison – Iris.
Adam – Unchained Melody / The man that got away / Purple Rain / When Doves Cry / Come What May (too many good songs for him)

    My choices. :D

  • mitchellvii

I would love to see Adam sing “Lady Marmalade”. Risky? Yes – he could look VERY gay singing a song done by 4 glammed out chicks. Potential for amazingness? Off the charts.

Question is, if Adam goes there (c’mon, you know he has to be tempted), will he risk going glam on it as in “Crawl Thru Fire” (can you imagine?) or will he keep it toned down?

One thing is for sure, I think Adam will give us something BIG this week. He has had two dialeed down perforrmances in last 3 weeks and one funky one. Will he go big beautiful or big rock? Big beautiful is the only thing he hasn’t done on the show yet.

We’ll see. Adam never picks what I think he will (should) so who knows.

  • Layla

Iconic eh? This probably means the typical retreads..damn. I don’t think it matters what Adam sings, as he is incapable of NOT Adamizing the song.

Allison has that fantastic voice , ibut it will come down to song choice for her.

I just wish they were allowed to do some lesser known songs and not the typical drivel.

I did get this image in my head of Adam singing “My Heart Will Go On” (a song which is a guilty pleasure of mine) and blowing Celine out of the water.

  • mandalay

Adam could do “Dude Looks Like a Lady”. It was in Mrs. Doubtfire.

  • mitchellvii

‘Lil does NOT want to sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“My Heart Will Go Onà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . She doesn’t want to come wiithin 100 miles of someone that can actually sing for comparison reasons.

P.S., The thing that amazes me on ‘Lil is how she can still have such avid fans after 5 weeks in a row of tragically horrible performances. They just keep saying “we all know she has such an amazing voice…”. Well, if by “amazing” you mean an ear-splitting pitchfest that makes my molars ache, yep, she is amazing.

  • terps

Adam should sing Dust in the Wind from some intrnational movie. Allison can’t sing Total Eclipse from the hear because she sang it in top 36

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

His comment on Diana was overly harsh and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really have any basis. What credibility does he have again?

His credibility right about now is that his name is not Randy, Simon, Paula, or Kara. That’s his credibility.

And…yeah, that Diana DeGarmo comment was spot on. She needed it.

I’m not big on movie soundtracks, so I wouldn’t know the first thing to suggest. But, whoever suggested “Love You I Do” for Lil, I think that’s a good one.

  • http://mypianoo.livejournal.com MyPiano

Allison canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t sing Total Eclipse from the hear because she sang it in top 36

Allison sang Alone in the Top 36.

  • jenna

I think Matt should do Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis from Top Gun.

  • http://cookiesanon.livejournal.com BuckeyeGal007

Actually, Lil should sing “My Heart Will Go On” because then maybe she’d get sent home finally and the judges won’t use the save…harsh? Yes, but I don’t think she’s ever going to hit her potential and I personally don’t think she’s that great anyway.

On the other hand, I think Anoop is in the most trouble this week no matter what song he chooses and how well he does.

  • background_noise

Now as far as Adam, I want another RoF WTF full on show. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s solid in his standing and now is the time to give it to us full blast.

Buderschnookie – couldn’t agree more! I wanna see and hear Adam blast the damns doors off the place this week. I still remember Quentin telling Fantasia (after the marvel that was Summertime) that he really wanted to see her rock the house again. Hoping Adam goes first too! First, last, or somewhere in between, not sure if it matters any more with him.

  • cookbunny

Hmm, they haven’t done a Movie Week since Season 3, huh? The crazy conspiracy theorist in me says the producers hope we have short-term memory loss and will trot out EXACTLY the songs done in either of those seasons (with the vague possibility of ONE soundtrack song that’s been released since 2004, just so they can say they’re “current”).

I think the only lock is Danny singing “When a Man Loves a Woman”. He’s on record as saying he wanted to sing the song on the show and I’m picking this is his chance.

I too hope Anoop does something a cappella, but if he hasn’t got the memo by now that he has to do something radical to stay in the competition, no-one can help him. Am rooting for him this week more than ever! Go Anoop!

I think Allison needs to steer clear of “Holding out for a Hero” as it’s a difficult song to “make your own” and could very easily become karaoke.

  • background_noise

The crazy conspiracy theorist in me says the producers hope we have short-term memory loss and will trot out EXACTLY the songs done in either of those seasons

My crazy conspiracy theory is that this is only the second time Quentin has been drawn in by a particular contestant. Although I’d love to think it’s Adam, in truth, I wouldn’t be surprised if Quentin loves Allison and just really wants the opportunity to work with her.

It’ll be a damn shame if they don’t scoot over and give QT a seat at the judges’ table.

  • monkeyface619

If that’s the case then it might as well be the 20 or so good songs that are from Tarantino movies.

I’m just going to re-post my suggestions from the thread where we learned the theme, as they haven’t changed. :)

As far as Tarantino goes…the guy’s an ass. Most of his movies are just so OTT/ADHD, it’s like he threw every style of filmmaking, including anime, into one movie just for the hell of it. I like Pulp Fiction, but that’s about it…I really don’t wanna see this guy yell at the kids (minus his chosen one) for an hour.

Allison: Cat Power à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sea of Loveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , from Juno. It would be so different from what sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s done and ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s happy! Haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbMeAOTPJzM

    Kris: Gin Blossoms à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Til I Hear it From Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ or Peter Gabriel à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“In Your Eyesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

    Adam: Alanis Morrisette, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Uninvitedà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ . à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Purple Rainà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would rock my face off too.

Matt: Tony Bennett à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Way You Look Tonightà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“, from like 12 movies, but I always think of My Best Friendà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Wedding. Solomon Burke à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Cry to Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , from Dirty Dancing. THAT would be hot, haha. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEu8DrO9PbY

Lil: Blah, I know sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s gonna go straight to The Bodyguard place. Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s hard to pick for herà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦Al Green & Joss Stone do a duet of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“How Can You Mend a Broken Heartà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on the Sex and the City Movie OST, she could cut out the Al part, haha. Or, if she really has these mad singing skills we keep hearing about, Billie Holiday à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll Be Seeing Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , it was in The Notebook.

    Danny: Patrick Swayze, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Sheà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Like the Windà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦now, I am actually being serious as well as snarky, haha. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Irisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , Goo Goo Dolls, from City of Angels. Too bad I love them both, as I know heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d end up over-singing. :P

Anoop: Jason Wadeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s cover of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“You Belong to Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from Shrek. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Ls6mXoEFGQ Or maybe he could do à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Take My Breath Awayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , it wouldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t be as expected and he could show us more of that lovely upper range he hit this week with à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“True Colorsà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ .

    Long time reader-lurker here.

Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m not sure what the exact rules are for what theyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ll allow for à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“iconic songs from cinemaà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , but à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Baby Did a Bad Bad Thingà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Chris Isaac was in Eyes Wide Shut.

I think Adam would absolutely KICK ASS with this song! In fact, his voice has sometimes reminded me of Chris Issac, with his strong lower register and stellar falsetto

Welcome, molls — and brilliant suggestion!

I was going to post that Adam performing “Stairway to Heaven,” “Whole Lotta Love” or “Immigrant Song” from The Song Remains the Same would cement his frontrunner status with the middle-aged male hair band constituency. But you came up with an edgy, more current selection that would be amazing — as long as he doesn’t oversneer.

The strategic choice for Adam would be Simon’s favorite, “Unchained Melody.” An added bonus would be that his version would become so iconic, they would have to retire the old chestnut forever. I still think this would be the perfect night to break out Jeff Buckley on “Last Goodbye,” but I know it’s not gonna happen. *sigh*

I want Allison to sing the snot out of “Lady Marmalade,” but I’m afraid Lil is going to pick it first.

I would like Kris to sit at the piano and amaze us with “God Only Knows.” It could be a huge moment.

    The rest? What. Evs.

  • sunchick

His comment on Diana was overly harsh and didnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t really have any basis.

Well, he nailed the reason I found her performances to be akin to nails on a chalkboard, so thumbs up from me. Tarantino is kinda the patron saint of pop culture junkies and he has a knack for using music to convey a certain mood in his movies, so there’s that. But mostly, he could be the Andrew Lloyd Webber say whatever the hell he’s thinking mentor of this season, which at the very least is bound to be awkwardly awesome. Or is it awesomely awkward?

I’m still hopin Adam goes balls to the wall this week. QT as a mentor is a golden opportunity to do something more out there than ROF because chances are excellent that he would not have a Randy Travis reaction. Anything from Velvet Goldmine, something from Moulin Rouge, Live and Let Die, Bowie’s Golden Years from A Knight’s Tale, Supermassive Black Hole….whatever, just bring back a little of the freak this week and I’m happy. Bring a lot of the freak and I’m thrilled.

I think Lil will stick around if she avoids anything Whitney. Obviously that copycat thing isn’t working out for her, plus I’m so sick of Whitney in general in the context of this show and other people must be too. Mary J. did a song for the Bad Boys soundtrack….

Kris…I dig the idea of Kris covering Mraz’s acoustic version of Rainbow Connection. I was hoping Castro would think of it last season.

Allison….I am still waiting for a quietly vulnerable stripped down moment. I thought “I Can’t Make You Love Me” would be it, but nah, same old spunky belty stomping Allison. Which was a good thing the first couple weeks, but getting stale for me. I think Quentin will want her to be more firey though, so…Son of a Preacher Man was on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack and fits Allison’s voice.

I’m in the camp with McCartney that considers that the greatest pop song ever written, so almost anyone who sings this would get my vote for reals.

Now as far as Adam, I want another RoF WTF full on show. Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s solid in his standing and now is the time to give it to us full blast.

I want to see and hear whatever it is that he wants to show me.

Gotta admit, I’m torn. While this would be great for me, and pretty fantastic for QT too, with the NY Times weigh in yesterday (and the lingering O’Reilly factor), full blast Adam may be too much for the virgin eyes/ears that tune in to see what all the fuss is about. :-) Unselfishly, I’d like to see him grab a whole lot of new lovers this week. But, I do agree that the theme and mentor may call for more.

Nonetheless, I vote big and beautiful with a little funk thrown in for good measure. Then again, Adam knows better than I — by a long shot — so he should just do his thing. I predict I’ll be happy regardless.

  • Buderschnookie

Ok guys- the reported clue for Adam’s song choice is “a holler for Eddie’s father” via Adam’s father.
Does that ring a bell for anyone?
The late Grandfather (he of the ring)?

  • Duke

If Adam sings a Freddy Mercury, Prince, or Aerosmith song i might have a heart attack and die of excitement.

Awww sorry you feel so sad, I can relate – I had to put my car to rest this past weekend!! I remember when he was on, this should be good, cant wait

The Dead Kennedys? The kid that played Brandon on The Courtship of Eddies father – is in that band? Just googled and came up with that, I love the clue stuff, I am almost always wrong but it is fun to search

  • dee

In 1963 there was a movie called The Courtship of Eddie’s Father with Glenn Ford…It was later made into a tv series with the same name starring Bill Bixby. I believe the theme from that movie won the oscar that year. It was called High Hopes and it was a song that he sang to his little boy.

I wish someone sings “All Love Can Be” from “A Beautiful Mind.” Well, only Adam can pull it off, though I don’t think he’s going to sing another haunting song two weeks in a row. Besides, it’s not an “iconic” song. Oh, well.

“Moon River” is iconic. It might suit Kris’ style, or, as someone said earlier, “Mrs. Robinson” from “The Graduate.” Perhaps “There You’ll Be” from Pearl Harbor will work wonders for Lil, or “Listen” from “Dreamgirls.” It would suit her but it’s funny because Lil does not seem to “listen” to the judge’s advice. Anoop, probably R. Kelly’s “I Believe I can Fly” from “Space Jam.” Matt? Hmm…”When You Say Nothing at All” from “Noting Hill” or “Unchained Melody” from “Ghost.” For Allison, “Everything I Do, I Do It For You” from “Robinhood: the Prince of Thieves” or “You Take My Breath Away” from “Top Gun.” As for Danny, I can see him singing, “When a Man Loves a Woman” from the same title, or for more sap, “Glory of Love” from “The Karate Kid,” or worst, “My Heart Will Go On.”

  • Buderschnookie

Isn’t Adam’s dads name Eddie, or am I totally inventing things now?

ETA: I am wrong, then. Sorry and never mind. :)

  • holeighannie

    Adam’s dad = Eber, I believe.

  • ptslittlecomment

There was a Courtship of Eddie’s Father movie, and Ron Howard played Eddie, so that could open up a whole lot of movie choices.

  • The Genius Predicts

I’ll stick to the songs that I suggested last week in a previous post.

Anoop – Christopher Cross “Arhtur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do)” Arthur

Danny – Phil Collins “Against All Odds” – Against All Odds

Matt – Joe Cocker “Up Where We Belong” – An Officer and a Gentleman

Lil – Whitney Houston “I Have Nothing” The Bodyguard

Adam – Harry Nillson – “Everybody’s Talkin’ Midnight Cowboy

Kris – “Rainbow Connection” The Muppet Movie

Allison – Vanessa Williams “Colors of the Wind” Pocahontus

  • The Genius Predicts

And thinking that they will have to choose songs from AFI’s (American Film Institutes) Top 100 Movie Songs of all time, I mostly choose songs from that list.

  • ptslittlecomment

I could see Kris singing “I’m Easy” , the Keith Carridine song from the movie Nashville.

Danny’s choice could be the same one as some us picked for last week “The Rose”

I’ve thought “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing”for Adam, as well as “Who Wants to Live Forever” from Highlander.

Adam’s dad is named Eber. He demonstrates a wry sense of humor on the Internet site for the poetry readings he hosts.

I just want somebody to sing Dark End of the Street from The Commitments.

Danny, Matt, Adam, and Allison could all do a fabulous job. Just wishing!

So Bill Bixby played Eddie’s father on the TV show. Bill Bixby also played The Incredible Hulk. Were there songs in the Hulk movie? Oh nevermind.

I wonder if Simon has put some Leonhard Cohen songs on the list, this would be a top opportunity to make some money for him.

I wish potential spoiler clues were less cryptic.

Is there a song in Twilight that has any connection with Edward Cullen’s father ? …lol

I too am looking forward to seeing Quentin Tarrantino as the mentor .. should lead to some interesting pre performance VT’s … and at least we’re guaranteed that he won’t be freaked out by the nail polish.

  • terps

My song for adam I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables.

  • piperlily

Ok, I just had my station playing random songs, and this song came on that I remember how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE:

    “Breathe” by Sia.

I know it might be too much like Mad World for Adam, but I’d love to see someone cover it. I’m pretty SURE it was in a movie. I could see Allison doing this (that would show her soft rock side, better than that Bonnie R. cover, not her style.) Or if MATT did this, I could see him doing it, not really for Kris. What do you think? Danny’s gotta do something by Bryan Adams, like “If You Ever Loved a Woman.” That would be cool for him. Similar gravelly voice going on.

I know I must’ve posted a few earlier on ideas for Adam. It’s all guessing, but I can’t wait to see what he’s come up with tomorrow night. Yay, one more day :rolleyes_tb:

  • karenw

Whist there are a number of songs from musical theatre shows (also sung in the film versions) that I would like to hear Adam sing (ie Phantom of the Opera, Gethsemane) I feel he should avoid any song with such a strong theatrical connection so he avoids being told that he’s more suited to Broadway.

Perhaps with Quentin as the mentor this week he’ll go for something more edgy and the guyliner and rocker look will be back.

I’d like to see him do

20th Century Boy – Velvet Goldmine
Wild is the Wind – Wild is the Wind (the Bowie version, not the Jonny Mathis one …lol)
Nature Boy – (Bowie Version), Moulin Rouge
People are Strange – Lost Boys

  • JohnM

Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦.I am still waiting for a quietly vulnerable stripped down moment. I thought à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I Canà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Make You Love Meà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ would be it, but nah, same old spunky belty stomping Allison.

Maybe you missed the verse? And the verse from Don’t Speak the week before? She’s been doing exactly that. I’m pretty sure that her I Can’t Make You Love Me was the most moving vocal I’ve ever heard in my life. And yes, I’m dead serious.

I just want somebody to sing Dark End of the Street from The Commitments.

Ooooh, good movie/group to pick from!

Along a new line, my better half pointed out that since the Beatles catalog was cleared last year, the Hard Day’s Night and Help soundtracks should be available. Jason did a masterful job with And I Love Her last year — I’d love to see what Adam and Allison could do with that, although it won’t happen — for one thing, they’d both have to flip the song’s gender! :wink_wp:

But on a more realistic Beatles note, I think Can’t Buy Me Love would be great for Allison. As stupendous as she is, I think she could benefit from doing a song that’s both fun-loving and happy — like her fun Blame It On Your Heart performance, only better.

Yes, Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m an Allison fanatic. Get used to it. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m trying to.

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a holler for Eddieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ could refer to:

Eddie – the Meatloaf character in Rocky Horror Picture Show (Eddie’s father was Dr. Scott’s brother and Dr. Scott sang about how Eddie been a trial for his father) and Meatloaf sure did ‘holler” out those songs …

or “holler” could refer to that rural paridise MAYBERRY where Ron Howard (late of Courtship of Eddie’s Father) grew up with his TV dad Andy Griffith – who had a long career singing in movies and even got a Grammy for one of his gospel albums.

I think “holler” is the key to this clue …

The only person I’ve ever heard use the term “holler” in everyday conversation is Dolly Parton – and she has lots of movie music….

Oh, Gwen uses it in “Holler Back Girls” – was that ever in a movie? It refers to the other cheerleaders responding to the cheer leader’s chant.

  • hypnoticwhisper

Lil should NOT do a Whitney song. From what I can remember she did it during Hollywood week and it was horrible… just my opinion.

Allison could do the Paramore song from Twilight, i’m sure a lot of tween girls would love that.

If Matt sang a song from Ray that would be perfect

I don’t think that either Lil or Danny will pick something cliched for them. Not many movie songs are popping out for me, so I’ll just name one of my favorites (For your eyes only), though I doubt anyone will sing that.

I see that Son of a Preacher Man is on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. I can see Allison singing that, though I hope she does something not in the “rawk” sound. i was one of the few that didn’t like her version of Bonnie Raitt’s understated sound.

Phil Collins “Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now)” has to be the most overdone song on Idol.

    Season 7: Ramielle Malubay

    Season 5: Katherine McPhee

    Season 4: Scott Savol

    Season 4: Jessica Sierra

    Season 3: George Huff

    Season 2: Corey Clark

So who is going to show the greatest lack of imagination and recycle the same Idol schlock this year?

  • geekygirl

Please please PLEASE let no one sing Don’t want to miss a thing. I will CRY if anyone sings that drivel. I am so sick of it. I hate it, I didn’t even like it when cookie did it and I was a diehard fan. It’s been done to death, along with…

    anything by Whitney
    Against all Odds
    All by Myself

I don’t know what they should sing, there are a lot of good suggestions here, one song that comes off really well of anyone I have seen perform it on Idol or Xfactor is She’s like the Wind from Dirty Dancing. Don’t know who would sing it tho.

Hmmm, would Lil be so bold as to try to bellow My Heart will go on? She tries to take on the big ones.

I like the Edward Cullen possibility, someone said Adam could kill Muse and the song Supermassive Black Hole was used in the film. Not sure if it was particularly related to the dad tho.

  • mandalay

Okay, I’ll play on the “holler” thing. Adam in drag singing this.

Can’t tie the Eddie’s father thing into any of this though.

    I know! I know!

  • background_noise

    Alive by Pearl Jam

Yes, that was one of the first possibilities discussed this morning over at TWoP, but was it featured in a movie?

ETA: Okay, so someone at TWoP has posted Adam’s Dad’s previous clues from Mad World. The “holler to Eddie’s father” sure sounds like a clue now. A very cryptic clue, but a clue nonetheless.

  • mandalay

Hey, where did this clue come from anyway?

  • canucky

    Imaginary Heroes – 2005

The clues apparently come from Adam’s father’s Facebook page. I just flipped over to TWoP and they are still talking about it. He left a series of clues last week for Mad World but they were wildly cryptic. Based on that, I would think that “Alive” is much to obvious. Look at the clues he left for Mad World!:

Its Not Eddie Rabbit …. Frank the Rabbit is key character in the movie Donnie Darko (song Mad World is featured)

Jimmy Drew a W… Jimmy Durante’s character tells everyone the money is hidden under a W in the opening scene of Mad Mad Mad Mad World…drew it in the dirt… Drew Barrymore was in and produced Donnie Darko…

Watch out for hair on your bootee… hare on Yerbouti…Sheik Yerbouti …Frank Zappa…Frank the Rabbit
    (yes very cryptic)

Culpepper could have retired in Mexico… Spencer Tracy was Capt Culpepper who got the money and was caught heading for Mexico in the end of mad mmm World

Smiths first Watts Second….T4T original version was sung by Curt Smith.
(Watts*Second) are Joules in physics… Gary Jules sang the Darko Darko cover version

  • sunchick

    There was a character à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Nice Guy Eddieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in Reservoir Dogs.
Eddie Izzard was in Velvet Goldmine.

Stream of conciousness thoughts on that clue…. Nice Guy Eddie was played by Chris Penn, sniff RIP. Nice Guy Eddie’s father, Joe, ended up being the mastermind of the heist. The two most iconic songs used in Reservoir Dogs, though, are Stuck In The Middle With You, and Harry Nilson’s Coconut (you know, you put the lime in the coconut…) Nice Guy Eddie’s father did kind of drag his son into the middle of the whole thing, which resulted in his death (pretty much everyone’s death, except Mr. Pink) which maybe fits Stuck In The Middle With You. My mind has a hard time wrapping around the idea of Adam picking either of those two songs, especially since Stuck In The Middle was used, how do I put this…as a focal point of a graphic scene in the movie. Although, the Coconut song would definitely be WTF. If it had said holler for Eddie’s brother, I would think maybe something from a Sean Penn movie.

Eddie Izzard played Brian Slade/Maxwell Demon’s manager in Velvet Goldmine…not sure how that relates but pretty much any song from VG works for me. Oh, how about this…Eddie Izzard’s schtick is that he is an “excutive transvestite.” Now who is first responsible for mainstreaming such a persona? David Bowie. David Bowie is, then, in a way Eddie Izzard’s father and Velvet Goldmine is a shout out to Bowie if not a factual biography. (It’s stretching, right?)

Eddie Izzard also played Mr. Kite of the eponymous song in Across the Universe.

Yeah, Eddie Vedder’s song Alive is semi-autobiographical and has to do with being told his father might not be his bio father, but hell if I remember that song playing a prominent role in a movie. Speaking of Sean Penn and Eddies, Eddie Vedder wrote the soundtrack for Into The Wild, but I don’t think any of those songs were father-related? Hard Sun is the only one I can think of, really, and that doesn’t fit. Scratches head…

Let’s see….Edward Cullen….I don’t think any of the songs in Twilight were about daddy issues, but still love the idea of Supermassive Black Hole…. Okay, vampires….Interview with a Vampire is kind of the father of Twilight since poor Lestat and his minions have been thrown over for the Cullens, and GnR did a cover of Sympathy for the Devil for the Interview with a Vampire soundtrack that was popular at the time, mostly because it was the beginning of the end of GnR.

    Yeah, I got nuthin.

  • Lexus

I’d love to hear Adam perform anything from “The Doors” movie (Break on Through, Light My Fire, Riders on the Storm). I just don’t know how ‘iconic’ any of these are. And Viva Las Vegas, as mentioned upthread, would about do me in…though I can’t see it happening.

  • geekygirl

hmmmm, wasn’t the Supermassive song played during the baseball game? Maybe a holler back at dad on the other team? Who knows, grasping at straws here but the mad world clues were pretty cryptic too.

  • Buderschnookie

if it had said holler for Eddieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s brother, I would think maybe something from a Sean Penn movie.

Well, Leo Penn (Eddie’s (Chris Penn’s) father) directed a movie called “A Man Called Adam” in 1966 about a jazz trumpeteer, and (a WTF in itself) the soundtrack list includes “All That Jazz”.

Not the same “All That Jazz”, though.

    Full soundtrack list here.

    Lot’s of Leo Penn possibilities

  • snuffles

    Another wild a$$ guess.

Eddie Murphy was in “Dreamgirls”. Maybe one of the song sung by his character?

    I could see Kris singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Easyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , the Keith Carridine song from the movie Nashville.

    Interesting choice–and an Oscar winner.

It’s a tough week. It will be tempting to pick sappy songs that are oversung (“I will always love you,” “Moon River,” “My Heart Will Go On,” or most songs made famous in Disney films, like “Beauty and The Beast,” Colors of the Wind, Reflection) but it is important to pick songs that aren’t completely foreign to people. I hope they pick songs that were released as singles and charted.

    I’d love to hear:

“Easy to be Hard” from the movie (and musical) “Hair.” It’s an awesomely powerful song. Three Dog Night had a little hit of it in 1969.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gj4vfrPdfdo

“Nature Boy” was good idea that someone earlier had too. It’s a really beautiful song for someone with a beautiful voice and great control.

But, MJ’s right, it would seem odd for Ryan to spoil.

    Re: Holler for Eddie’s father

This is a crazed stretch of the imagination:

If it’s Eddie Van Halen, from his IMDB bio, “His father, Jan van Halen, was an accomplished sax and clarinet musician in his own right. He appeared on clarinet on “Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)” on the “Diver Down” album (released on April 14th, 1982).” Diver Down’s biggest hit, of course, was “Oh Pretty Woman” which has been used in countless movies. This song would be another vehicle for Adam’s histrionics, and uptempo for a change.

    Another weirder possibility:
If we’re talking Courtship of Eddie’s father, Miyoshi Umeki played the maid in the TV series, but as an actress she won an Oscar for the movie “Sukiyaki.” Sukiyaki was a #1 hit in 1983, an English version hit #2 for A Taste of Honey in 1982, but I don’t see that either song was used in a movie.

I think that Adam is capable of pulling off the otherwise untouchable Purple Rain…if anyone else did it, they would likely be stoned to death in the parking lot of the theater. Thing is about Purple Rain, its already maxed out with flair, so how would he change it? Or maybe it would be interesting if he stayed true to the original since its so obvious that he is well capable of turning a song upsidedown.

Another song that instantly came to mind for Adam and would have every teen girl, woman and gay man in the country licking their TV screens is #1 Crush by Garbage from Romeo & Juliet. But he just did dark and brooding last week.

    I could see Kris singing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m Easyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ , the Keith Carridine song from the movie Nashville.

Interesting choiceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’and an Oscar winner.
    ….
    Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d love to hear:

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Easy to be Hardà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from the movie (and musical) à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hair.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s an awesomely powerful song. Three Dog Night had a little hit of it in 1969.”

Easy To Be Hard could be an Allison moment?

Oh wow, people need to rediscover Three Dog Night. Speaking of which, I wouldn’t mind someone doing “One” like Aimee Mann did for Magnolia.

  • MsAdamEve

    WHat are Adam’s father’s clues?
I’d love him to sing anything by Radiohead.

  • http://myspace.com/susanatfox sumidol

    “Ok guys- the reported clue for Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s song choice is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“a holler for Eddieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ via Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s father.”

This is a clue – msadameve

  • leaparrott

I think that Lil could really show off her talent with “Maybe God Is Tryin’ to Tell You Somethin’” from the Color Purple. It would be a great song for her, and could be a show stopper!

  • Natasha

    Or from TWoP
    Billy Idol Rebel Yell
Billy Idol/Bixby and Yell = holler.

I think that could be a winner. Somebody did some good thinking.

  • jz

    ^^
    I agree. Very good guess.

On a side note, it’s awesome that Adam’s dad is leaving these super-confusing, brain-racking clues for us.

  • PattyH

The best movie song ever is “Moon River” but I can’t see Ryan giving out hints about what anyone is singing. Actually, I’ll bet Ryan doesn’t even see the songs until Tuesday when he gets to rehearsal.

  • soundscene

I predict most of them will sing obscure movie songs that I don’t recognize.

    That’s what usually happens. lol.

  • monkeyface619

I don’t think the Rebel Yell prediction is accurate. How you get Billy Idol and Bill Bixby together, I don’t see that. If you’re going to go off on tangents shouldn’t there be a Lou Ferrigno reference somewhere? And this is all based on “Eddie’s father” specifically referring to the TV show. What if it’s not?

  • stelladallas

Every week, everyone on this blog comes up with fantastic song choices for the idols, which in turn leads to disappoint when the show airs and I hear the actual songs chosen! LOL As soundscene said above, the songs are either obscure OR boring, predictable songs that may have been done to death on Idol already.

  • sr4mjc

Alot of ‘She’s ‘ in Rebel Yell. He usually does gender neutral songs.

  • hollycat

What I can’t figure out is what film has Rebel Yell been in? Can’t immediately think of one.

If it is Reservoir Dogs, I’d like to hear Magic Carpet Ride.

  • Calas

I could see Adam pulling off Pearl Jam’s Man of the Hour from Big Fish. It’s about a father, so it might work for the clue.

  • MsAdamEve

High Hopes by Pink Floyd fits Adam’s father’s clue.

  • ptslittlecomment

High Hopes by Pink Floyd fits Adamà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s fatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s clue.

But was it in a movie? The Wall?

  • cheese

My biggest hope for this week is that QT got the contestants off-camera, told them if their song choices suck, and suggested alternatives. If he’s still a huge fan of the show, he doesn’t want to hear anyone sing All By Myself or Against All Odds again either.

If they’re sticking to the same tired list, then most of the songs suggested for Adam seem pretty unlikely. The Meatloaf song from Rocky Horror would make me LMAO so I hope he does that one.

  • piperlily

I agree, Soundscene. Maybe they should let us vote for their song choices, or at least narrow it to three they choose from for a week’s theme — that’d be cool to do! Maybe they’d actually get better songs that way!

Man, I was trying to find a song that would fit that clue, and I got way way off… Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)? I hope I’m wrong on that one.

But then an even further stretch is the original album’s name, “What’s Going On,” which is also a song done by 4 Non Blondes. Though I have no idea what movie that’d be in.

Out of ALL the songs he could choose from… it’s gotta be good — better than what I’m thinking of from that clue.

  • sr4mjc

    This just posted on TWoP

“The movie Reservoir Dogs has the Character Nice Guy Eddie. His father is Joe Cabot. One of Joes lines is “Boys, I don’t mean to holler at ya.” During the dialogue they mention Madonna and specifically, Like a Virgin, True Blue, Lucky Star, and Borderline. This all takes place during a conversation about men having sex together. Ssoooooooooooo…?”

    Madonna song?

  • lorenzo

First I have to thank you for this blog… it’s really nice of you to share, and put in the time..etc, THANK YOU!

    Okay,

Adam… he’s really the only one I like, and my wife likes… and my four lil children…

    Although I do LIKE Matt…

Adam should sing… “Is anybody listening” from the MOVIE he did “The ten Commandments” that had his lower to mid reg.., and the KILLER high notes, vibrato… EVERYTHING. Or “The Beautiful ones/Purple Rain” or something from Sgt. Peppers… anything.

  • MsAdamEve

Well I did say that I would still support Adam if he were to come out singing “like a virgin” and wearing Paula’s tutu.

Matt could do the Meatloaf song – it’s got a heavy honky tonk piano – keep him seated (safer)

    Adam Lambert – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Street Lifeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Randy Crawford – Jackie Brown – Dancerific! – VIDEO
    Allison Iraheta – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Baby ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Smith – Death Proof – Allison, getting all torch! VIDEO – or Mauraà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s selection, Maria McKeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If Love is a Red Dressà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from Pulp Fiction – VIDEO

Kris Allen – Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m in agreeance with Maura here: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Lonesome Townà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Ricky Nelson – Pulp Fiction – Watch the fangirls swoon! – VIDEO
Lil Rounds – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Letà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Stay Togetherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Al Green – Pulp Fiction – An opposite gender pick might help Lil escape the karaoke label. Or, she could just butcher it. – VIDEO
Matt Giraud – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Love You Save (may be your own) – by Joe Tex – Fits right into that cozy R&B box the judges builtà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ just for Mattà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦ – VIDEO.”

MJ, I’ve been pimping for the all-Tarantino-all-the-time theme for a week now. I don’t think Anoop could grasp Strawberry Letter but I think Matt could. Street Life might be the one song that could save Lil from eLilimination if she can put some ass into it. And I can’t see if Tarantino is there, that nobody would do the two iconic songs from his movies, “Girl You’ll Be a Woman Soon” and “Stuck In the Middle With You” — Adam for the former and Kris for the latter, and if they both stick the landing, the two would be your prohibitive top two going forward.

  • beesims

So many cool suggestions and I love the idea of using songs from Quentin Tarantino movies and yet I feel that somehow that those tired old idol chestnuts such as “How Can I Live” and “Against All Odds” will prevail. Just kill me know.

My ALL TIME FAVORITE SONG —– Radar Love (Golden Earring) has been in several movies; Wayne’s World 2, Pushing Tin, etc and has been COVERED OVER 300 times!

Radar-Love.net shows a list which contains more than 300 cover versions of “Radar Love” U2, R.E.M., Blue Man Group, James Last, Bryan Adams, Def Leppard, White Lion, Crowded House and many others …

Surely there’s an Eddie in there somewhere!

What a HOT MESS Adam could make of Radar Love.

OMG, yes, the opening dialogue is brills for the oddity of these seedy criminal types debating the meaning of the lyrics to “Like A Virgin” and whether automatic tipping is a tyranical practice that society dictates or is just good manners LOL. Also, Like A Virgin was sung in Moulin Rouge in probably the funniest scene of the movie so it could possibly be on the table. Hee, that would be something.

  • sayxwhat

LOL. I’m not even going to predict what Adam might sing. He can sing anything. I honestly thing he could sing Old McDonald’s and do an amazing job.

As evil as this sounds… I hope lil chooses something terrible so she goes home. But I have this funny feeling inside that she’s going to nail it week. Please don’t let me be right! :frown_tb:

I love reading these threads. I haven’t a clue what they will do. I only hope that Lil does something she shouldn’t because I’d like to see her go. If you read Adam’s Dad’s clues for previous weeks, you see that the name (such as Eddie) doesn’t really have anything to do with it. Of course, this week could be different. But I think Eddie is just some name that isn’t part of the clue. His Dad and brother’s blog contain some imaginative deep thinking! I think the whole family is very ummmm creatively different and unique!

  • MsAdamEve

I have a question: Did we hear about the Mad World clues prior to today? Could be that the Mad World clues were made to make this week’s seem legitimate….I hadn’t heard about any Mad World clues from Adam’s father.

Another thing….who would have access to his Facebook? Seems unlikely that his father would post clues.

  • Anastasia72071

I really hope everyone stays away from anything Whitney/Celine, “Against All Odds” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” (though I can totally picture Gokey doing the latter, which I think would make me gag).

It took me a while to find the comment containing Adam’s dad’s cryptic clues, and like everyone else I’m stumped. The only thing that came to mind was that maybe Adam will do something from “Eddie & the Cruisers”, which I think would be awesome (although John Cafferty’s vocals are deeper & a lot rougher than Adam’s, so I’m not totally convinced it would be a good fit), but I can’t recall that movie having any focus (or any mention whatsoever) on the main character’s father, so I’m probably waaaay off-base.

I do think Adam will stay away from the obvious – anything Prince, Michael Jackson, Rocky Horror etc. and anything too theatrical (the last thing he wants at this point is the judges to bring out the “theatre=bad” mantra again), although I’d bet money he’s going to rock it out this week (bring on the eyeliner!), simply because of the fact that he’s done two quiet songs in the past three weeks. *Can’t wait*!!

  • lorenzo

Well.. about the “theatre” stuff… That’s what people love about his voice.. one of the things… The judges are pretty off sometimes..

I LOVED Ring of Fire, Simon for some odd reason didn’t.

  • carlaboozer

Anoop- “Fly Like An Eagle” by Seal from Space Jam

Allison- “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin from Top Gun

Danny Gokey “My Heart Will Go On” By Celine Dion from Titantic

Kris Allen on piano “I Think I See The Light” from “Harold and Maude”

Adam Lambert “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie from “Grosse Point Blank”

Matt Giraud “Try A Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding from Pretty in Pink. Yes please do this. Would be the best performance of the night.

Lil Rounds “Not Gon’ Cry” by Mary J Blige from Waiting To Exhale.
As Randy would say Some Mary J, Keisha Cole Dawg. Work it out.
Just change it up Lil so they don’t call you copycat. So you will accomplish:
    1. Singing Keisha Cole, Mary J Dawg
    2. Not being copycat
    3. Not a song that is too big for her

  • flynnsgirl

Trying to guess the clues from Adam’s Dad are near impossible,

Adam’s father’s clues from last week for Mad World were:
    1.Its Not Eddie Rabbit
    2. Jimmy drew a W
    3. Watch out for hair on your bootee
    4. Culpepper could have retired in Mexico
    5. Smiths first Watts Second

Then the explanation of the clues:

    Cryptic Clue Key:

Smiths first Watts Second….T4F original version was sung by Curt Smith.
(Watts*Second) are Joules in physics… Gary Jules sang the Donnie Darko cover version

  • MsAdamEve

    “Holler for Eddieà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s father”

Could Eddie be Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder? In which case the song could be Man of the Hour from Big Fish? It doesn’t sound like an Adam song though….

Was “Alive” on the soundtrack of a movie? Alive is about Eddie’s father too.

Oh I would LOVE to hear Adam sing some Pearl Jam!

  • flynnsgirl

As far as I know he posted them on his FB, someone who is a friend of his brought them over to another site. Same person is the one who said his father make the comment about having to change his song at the last minute to PTFM and how much he (dad) hated that song.
Who knows if it’s legit or not, but if you read Adam’s dad’s Myspace and some of his poetry, the man is very clever, very out there and pretty brilliant. So those clues sound like they could have come from him. Again, who knows.

  • krismas29

I’ve been following the Adam’s father’s clues debate here and the first Eddie I thought of was Eddie Munster .. so I googled and Eddie’s Munster father was Fred Gwynne .. more googling and Fred Gwynne played Judge Chamberlain Haller in My Cousin Vinny. Haller/Holler .. just saying =) I don’t see a likely song on that soundtrack though!

  • sprocket79

My brain went to “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” which starred Bill Bixby, otherwise known as Bruce Banner on the tv series The Incredible Hulk. So my thought was a song off one of the Hulk movie soundtracks. Maybe “Set Me Free” by Velvet Revolver?

  • MsAdamEve

Flynnsgirl, ty. Did you know about the Mad World clues last week, or did they only surface today?

Mr. Lambert, we need another clue, please!

Krismas29, the first Eddie I thought of was Eddie Munster too! But was that because of the “Eddie Munster” hair that Adam sported on a couple of shows? LOL. For the record, I esp. liked that hair for TOMT. :) Anyway you followed the EM thing through a lot farther than I did.

Was John Travolta Vinny or Vincent on Pulp Fiction. Because he was Vinny on Welcome Back Kotter, right? It’s kind of fun to follow the clues even if they aren’t real, but it would be nice to know if they are.

Could it be Johny Depp connection? Edward Scissorhands, Legend of Sleeping Hollow (Holler). Hmmmm.

    ETA: edited for spelling.

I thought I remembered Simon standing up before, once or twice. He did stand up for Clay’s wild card performance of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me, as seen here on youtube:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCODviWWq54

I think he might have stood up at some other time but can’t think of when. It’s very rare though.

  • krismas29

I love the clues; I also wish we had more to work with!

I’m stuck on the ‘Eddie’s father’ clue being a reference to Fred Gwynne so I way be off on the wrong track … but I agree with whomever posted earlier that ‘holler’ is probably the real clue. So… I also saw that Kurt Cobain dedicated a song to Fred Gwynne (aka Eddie’s father) just after he died .. but I couldn’t find which song it was. That could count as a holler!

  • Ellie2

Oooh, krismas29, I think you may be onto something w/ the Kurt Cobain reference. But I couldn’t find what song he sang after the dedication, either. Does anybody know?

  • SparklesATL

I would give a kidney to see and hear Adam sing “Cain’t Say No” from the musical “Oklahoma!”

In case some memories need refreshing, here’s the first verse.

Cain’t Say No – Rodgers & Hammerstein II
It ain’t so much a question of not knowin’ what to do
I knowed what’s right and wrong since I been ten
I heared a lot of stories –and I reckon they’re true–
About how girls are put upon by men.
I know I mustn’t fall into the pit,
    But when I’m with a feller…
    I fergit!

I’m jist a girl who cain’t say no,
    I’m in a turrible fix.
I always say, come on, let’s go–
Just when I orta say nix!
When a person tries to kiss a girl,
I know she orta give his face a smack.
But as soon as someone kisses me…
I somehow sorta wanna kiss him back!

  • MsAdamEve

Hmm….The lyrics to the City of Angels soundtrack have the word Holler in them. How about Uninvited by Alanis?

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

    Elllie2

I know Kurt dedicated a song to Fred and a bunch of other people (including someone who threw water on him) and River Phoenix. He used to dedicate their cover of the Vaselines version of Jesus Doesn’t Want Me For A Sunbeam to River. I would be that was it.

The entire quote is “This song is dedicated to Frank Zappa and River Phoenix, Fred Gwynne who played Herman Munster, Dixie Lee Ray, Thomas P, Tip O’Neil, and you, dumb ass, who just threw water on me. “

  • ankh

    Okay..how’s this?

In the film ‘Reservoir Dogs’, Eddie’s father was played by Lawrence Tierney. Lawrence Tierney was also in ‘Armeggedon’. Did Ryan Seacrest leave a clue about Adam’s choice being one of the greatest movie songs ever? Would ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’ qualify?

  • hardkandy

I can’t get over how much Quentin looks like my bb Roger Federer (who just got married btw…) haha… sorry for the offtopic.

  • wonderings

This Adam Song Speculation from the “clue” is mighty hilarious.

But ya’ll I’ve got it this time for reals! Eddie’s Father is a reference to the Courtship of Eddie’s Father which starred Bill Bixby as, well, Eddie’s Father. Bill Bixby was in the Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk was *green* (jealous of Adam’s awesomness, natch) and that made him VERY ANGRY so he flexed his mighty vox-cles and Hollered “It’s not easy being green!!”. Just like Kermit the Frog did. And obviously, that’s Adam’s song.

I won’t even get into the subtext of ‘Easy Bein’ Green’. Heh.

Now if you tell me that song wasn’t actually featured in a movie, I will cry.

  • lavender1960

This is surely going to be one interesting night of American Idol. Or it could be if the peeps are bold and the clearances are forthcoming.

A lot of really cool suggestions all around and have we even begun to tap the Tarantino soundtrack legacy?

    Let alone moviedom’s soundtrack catalogue.

  • mrcritic1980

“Not Easy Being Green” is from “Sesame Street”, which is a TV show, not a movie. “The Rainbow Connection” is a song from a movie.

  • cookcricket

mj, I’m just wondering, is anyone in connection to you going to the rehearsal tomorrow?

  • sunchick

Could it be Johny Depp connection? Edward Scissorhands, Legend of Sleeping Hollow (Holler). Hmmmm.

Okay, last convoluted guess before tomorrow. Edward Scissorhand’s father was played by Vincent Price, who made a career out of making people holler. Course, if you are hollering out of fear, you would call it a scream. (Actually, Eddie Munster’s father also might make people scream at first sight.) So, a holler for Eddie’s father (be it Vincent Price or Herman Munster) is a scream. Maybe Adam is singing Whisper To A Scream from the movie Scream? Coincidentally, the dude who played Nice Guy Eddie’s father in Reservoir Dogs was also in a horror movie called…From A Whisper To A Scream, which was narrated by…Vincent Price. Annnnyway, song actually sounds like something Adam could pull off with a little remixing, and it gives Simon a chance to freak out over the bird reference in the lyrics, which is always fun.

    Here could be another clue from Ryanà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s twitterà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦

    à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“What is the best movie song ever?à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

According to the AFI list, that song is “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, which of course was sung by Kat McPhee Season 5 and Jason last season, and there are youtube clips of Kris singing it accompanied by the uke, as Jason did.
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not sing this, Kris!!!!!! Please go for the new and creative!
I do hope Tarantino, as someone mentioned above, truly mentored everyone, and told them straight out what he thought of their choices. I know they have already chosen their songs by the time he gets to them, though.

  • kbr

I just hope people try out some songs written or at least performed during the last ten years tonight. Not many of them have ventured out of the comfort zone of 60′s, 70′s, and 80′s other than maybe country week and it would be really nice to hear what kind of music they see themselves making after Idol.

Ok, so Matt tried this and clearly it didn’t work out well both times he tried so maybe I’ll give him a pass on modern music this week, but I think everyone else needs to step it up and sing a new song tonight. Please!!!

This is a special message for Lil’ even though I am not really a fan: No Whitney, No Mariah, No Celine, and while we’re getting rid of all the big diva singers take Aretha out as well. This is a chance to wow everyone without picking a predictable song tonight!

  • piperlily

Savgal – remember last season when Carly was convinced last minute by AL Webber to sing her second choice, JCSS? Though it turned out bad for her unfortunately, it seems that the mentors CAN change the contestants minds about their song choice last minute, if they have second choices on hand.

And thanks Lorenzo for finding another link — YT links never stay put. :blink_tb:

Here’s a list of best songs of all time from RS:
    http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/500songs

Seeing Beatles songs… it made me think of Across the Universe. Oh, but then I’m thinking of the Beatles theme last season and how that didn’t go over too well. Hmm.

  • BabbleOn

Here’s my take on the Holler for Eddie’s Father clue:

Courtship of Eddie’s Father – TV show – Harry Nilsson wrote the show’s theme song “Best Friend.”

Harry Nilsson also wrote a song as a tribute to the Beatles, titled “Stand Up and Holler.”

You can hear an mp3 clip – google – for the love of harry stand up and holler

So, Adam could be singing a song from one of the Beatles five movies., like “I Am The Walrus” from “Magical Mystery Tour” (probably not – pretty weird!), or he could be singing a song from a movie that was written/performed by a member of the Beatles, for instance, ” Live & Let Die” theme by Paul McCartney & Wings. I’m going with this one, shows off Adam’s vocal strength, and this week should be up-tempo after last week’s anthem to angst ridden teens.

  • bean99

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought of Eddie Munster with the clue. I was really feeling my age, lol.

I really don’t have a clue what they’re singing. It’s such a wide open theme. Hopefully they’re not being limited to 30 songs again. It makes you wonder how good the show could be if they gave the kids more choices.

I like this, if for no other reason that it gave me a mental workout from my otherwise predictable day.

Does anyone know if any songs from Van Halen’s OU812 album have been in movies? The liner notes in the album say “This one’s for you, Pa.” A holler to Eddie Van Halen’s father? It’s a little farfetched but that’s the only reasonable thing I’ve come up with that hasn’t been mentioned already.

  • monkeyface619

I think the clue is being taken too literally; I suspect Eddie’s father is a reference to some famous person who has a child named Eddie, rather than a famous Eddie’s father.

  • LoveU

Don’t think this is in a movie, but at some point I would love love love for Adam to sing something by George Michael.

  • http://absinthedreamers.blogspot.com/ Starrlight

If Adam did do Whisper To A Scream I would hope to God he does the Icicle Works original version and NOT the Scream version.

    # Allison Iraheta – à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Baby ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s Youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ by Smith – Death Proof – Allison, getting all torch! VIDEO – or Mauraà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s selection, Maria McKeeà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If Love is a Red Dressà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from Pulp Fiction – VIDEO

MJ – I’m totally loving Baby it’s You for Allison.

“This Adam Song Speculation from the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“clueà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ is mighty hilarious.”

    I know its fun

  • onherthize

Alison would totally rock Baby Its You by Smith…

Kris would do well with Everybodys Talkin – Nilsson ( its just him)

Lil should do Harder they Come or You can get it if you really want – Jimmy Cliff
(that would hip her up a bit)

Matt Should do Old Time Rock and Roll – Seger (michigan and all)

Anoop should sing My Way ala Sid Vicious from Sid&Nancy

Danny should sing Love Story. (Warning: no projectiles in the TV room)

    Adam should sing Help!

  • Niall

I love some of the song suggestions but I know AI enough to know that the same old retreads will be available and I’m braced for at least one contestant to come out doing “Against All Odds.” And somebody might even try the Titanic song. Lather, rinse, repeat. I hope I’m wrong.

  • DawnMarie1

I would love to see someone sing a song from The Doors… maybe Adam?
Also, I would love to hear a song from The Graduate…maybe Kris doing “Mrs. Robinson” on accoustic…or “Sounds of Silence”. = )
I would also love for someone to sing “Melt With You” from Valley Girl…I could also see Kris doing a kind of Jason
    Mraz-like version of this.
Someone mentioned “Try a Little Tenderness”….I can definitely see Matt doing this, and sounding really good.
I also love the song “Wild Horses”…originally by the Stones, but covered by so many….version of it in “Fear” in the infamous roller coaster scene with Mark Walberg and Reese Witherspoon…a female singer (I can’t remember who)—but I wouldn’t mind seeing Allison doing a song like this.
I don’t know….these are just a few that come to mind.

Somebody above me suggested that Adam might be singing “Man of the Hour” a song written for the movie “Big Fish.” I played on this idea for a bit and I really think that this might be what his father is going with. The movie followed EDWARD Bloom an Alabama man who is retelling stories from his incredible life right before he dies. The song was written by EDDIE Veder, specifically for the movie.

Also, I noticed that Mr. Lambert’s previous clues all had double meanings. Tim Burton directed the movie Big Fish. He also directed and wrote EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. One could call him Edward’s father by way of creating the character.

I also found a connection to the word Holler. A Holler is the southern way of saying “Hollow” a small isolated area in the Appalachian valley. That is very similiar to the town of Spectre, Alabama in the movie Big Fish. I also did a little search on “Holler’s in Alabama” and found a campground called “Sleepy Holler” Another, tie to Tim Burton. :)

Of course, anyone can try and spin it to their specified song choice, however, I really think that this song makes sense based on the given clues.

  • Danica_K

Reading through these comments it seems like Adam is the only contestant on the show. I’ve said it a million times, he’s super talented but not my cuppa but if he wins then great. I just wish I could, you know, get away from him for a second or two.

I’m really curious as to what songs are on the list of available songs. I’ve read over the AFI’s 100 list, and there are lots of good songs there to choose from. I’d love some of them to do:

    It Had To Be You
    As Time Goes By
    Let The River Run
Lose Yourself (will never happen, would still be awesome)
    Come What May

OMG, do you think Lil will sing Flashdance (What A Feeling)? Ugh. As long as she doesn’t attempt to sing Whitney or Celine.

Looking forward to see what they all produce tonight!

  • kerfuffle

Danica, I think the main reason Adam is being mentioned so much is that he’s the only one with a supposed clue, and the peeps are just trying to decipher. Oh yeah, and he’s awesome. :)

I think maybe the rest of us who have a different fave feel a little outnumbered here, so we keep our comments to ourselves? I don’t know.

This thread has gone so Adam “Eddie’s Father” crazy, I am kinda embarrassed reading it. But I still am. :)

On IDF someone posted that a back up singer twittered this comment:

Songs from movies is the theme @ American Idol tonight! Rehearsal is proving to “separate the men from the boys” so to speak… I love it!

  • Victoria

Can’t wait, MJ! Thanks Cara and Carie!

My head is spinning from all this speculation over Mr. Lambert’s clues, haha. The bird thing just confused me more. It’s given me a good brain workout today, though.

  • hollycat

If that’s all true, the bird comment fits the one suggestion of Live & Let Die (Wings). But what the hell do I know, I’m just havin’ fun……
    and waiting for the show.

  • MsAdamEve

Seperate men from boys? Man of the hour?

  • karenw

whooo .. thanks MJ, Carrie and Cara for bringing us spoilers from the dress rehearsal . it helps to kill time while I’m trying to keep awake here in the UK until the live streaming starts.

As far as the whole Eddie’s father and birds thing is concerned .. I’ve given up as I have brain ache …lol
