Top 7 Theme: “Idols at the Movies” with Mentor Quentin Tarantino, Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Hudson Perform

ETA: More from the FOX press release:

Next week, the Top 7 finalists à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ Kris Allen, Anoop Desai, Matt Giraud, Danny Gokey, Allison Iraheta, Adam Lambert and Lil Rounds à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ take the stage Tuesday, April 14 (8:00-9:01 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) to perform songs of the cinema under the guidance of director Quentin Tarantino in an à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Idols at the Moviesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ -themed performance show.

Tune in the following night Wednesday, April 15 (9:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) to find out if the judges use their save or if America sends another finalist home. Also, Season Three finalist Jennifer Hudson returns to the IDOL stage to perform her new single, à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“If This Isnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t Love,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and Miley Cyrus will sing à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“The Climbà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ from à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hannah Montana: The Movie.”

Quentin Tarantino was a guest judge for Season 3’s Top 8 movie theme.   He’s a total American Idol geek, so this should be a lot of fun.

I just got done watching American Idol Extra and Jillian Reynolds just announced that next week’s theme will be:

Songs from the Movies

What do you think?   Any ideas on what the Idols should sing?

No wayà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’Syesha slayed that last year. It will forever be added to the annals of untouchable idol songs.

    Syesha forevermore owns à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Hit Me Upà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’lucky girl. :)

LOL – I have no recollection of Syesha singing this song last year. (actually, truth be told, I can’t remember a single Syesha performance off the top of my head).

I like “Live or Let Die” for Adam. I think he would be terrific in this. Also, I think he would do good on “Would” by Alice in Chains from Singles. And “Behind Blue Eyes” , but I think I would like this for Kris also.

Anybody ever do “Change the World” on Idol? Love that song, and as others suggested it would fit Kris well.

“Everybody’s Talkin’” was what I sent a link of earler — great tune, especially for anyone who can ace some high notes

Kris should do something he can rearrange tho and make his own. some of these songs don’t have much wiggle room

OK, kids, Randy Newman was mentioned: so who should do “You Can Leave Your Hat On” from that old Mickey Rourke movie? Would that be just a teensy risque for Idol? I can hear Matt on that one…

  • The Genius Predicts:

Kris could do the Jason Mraz acoustic version of Rainbow Connection and knock it out of the park. That is why I suggested that song for him.

Oh, 9 1/2 Weeks. Pretty creepy movie, but a fabulous soundtrack. I’m not sure of the Randy Newman connection (although he is awesome), but “You can Leave Your Hat On” was sung by Joe Cocker (equally awesome).

Wait – what is this you speak of? How have I never heard of this? I like Jason Mraz, and the Rainbow Connection is simply one of the greatest songs of all time. How in the hell did this get by me? Off to find this deliciousness RIGHT NOW……

  • freewillissweet:

I’d love to hear Adam sing, “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King,” if only for the lyrics.

  • The Genius Predicts:

Did you check it out SpenserJ? If Kris sings that, he’ll knock’em dead. It might be the perfect song choice for him, especially with the acoustic guitar.

  • The Clash covered I Want You To Want Me? I have heard Cheap Trickà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s original and the cover by LTC but never the Clash.

Nope, nope. Copy/Paste/Delete error. I originally had Death or Glory on there for her, but she is such a mushmouth (as much as I love her!) and decided to go for the other one instead. Didn’t highlight enough to paste over. Epic Fail.

A great song for Adam would be Fuel’s “Won’t Back Down” from the 2003 movie Daredevil. He’d probably have to do away with the background lyrics, but he’d still be able to nail it…homerun for sure!

  • Margaux:

As many of you have already noted, there isn’t a song that hasn’t appeared in a soundtrack.
Today while I was going about my business I was thinking about Adam and Danny.

Danny needs to tone down the cheese to move me out of the neutral zone. Someone who has his range and tone but is dairy-free is Mr. Elvis Costello, and I just happened to hear his cover of Nick Lowe’s “What’s So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding”, which we remember from Bill Murray’s classic Karaoke scene in Lost in Translation. Danny should rent the movie, sing the song, and score cred points.
More likely he’ll do anyone of the Bryan Adams movie themes.

When I heard Adam’s Mad World, something about the singing reminded me of Chris Isaak. His best soundtrack contribution was “Baby’s Done a Bad Bad Thing” from Eyes Wide Shut. “Wicked Game” was in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart. Either would work for me.

And when I think of Chris Isaak, I can’t help but think of his musical mentor, Roy Orbison. Someday before we’re done with season 8, Adam NEEDS to do Roy Orbison, because almost nobody can. “Pretty Woman”, “Only the Lonely” both inspired movies, or at least movie titles. Put on the Elvis hair, the throwback suit, assume some rockabilly swagger, and middle America will love Adam Lambert.

Matt Giraud: Any Randy Newman theme, from “I Love LA” to “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”.

that’s as far as my inspiration carries me tonight.

Hell yeah I did. It’s awesome. Thanks for enlightening me. I agree that it would be a fun choice for Kris.

    Few more suggestion:

Adam: Into The Groove (Madonna – from “Desperately Seeking Susan”), Turn The Beat Around (Gloria Estefan – from “The Specialist”)

Anoop: Where You Are (Jessica Simpson ft. Nick Lachey – from “Here On Earth”) or Let Me Let Go (Faith Hill – from “Message In A Bottle”)

Danny: There You’ll Be (Faith Hill – from “Pearl Harbor”) or American Pie (Madonna – from “The Next Bext Thing”)

Matt: I’m Alive (Celine Dion – from “Stuart Little 2″) or For All We Know (The Carpenters – from “Lovers And Other Strangers”)

Allison: We Can (LeAnn Rimes – from “Legally Blonde 2″) or Beautiful Strangers (Madonna – from “Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me”)

Lil: One Day I’ll Fly Away (Nicole Kidman – from “Moulin Rouge”) or The Way We Were (Barbra Streisand – from the movie with the same name)

Kris: Need To Be Next To You (Leigh Nash – from “Bounce”) or Foolish Games (Jewel – from “Batman & Robin”)

Anyway, I think the group will sing Lady Marmalade on the result night

  • PokeSmot:

I wanna hear Allison sing that song from Pulp Fiction, “Son of a Preacher Man”.

I wanna hear Anoop or Gokey sing “Original Sin” and/or Adam sing “Devil Inside” (INXS). :devil_tb:

I wanna hear Lil sing “If you should lose me” (Etta James).

Kris would be great on (I don’t know what it’s call exactly, but it’s also from Pulp Fiction)…that song that Bruce’s singing; it has the words “Captian Kangaroo” in it.

Wait, do Disney movies count? Cuz Matt can do something from Aladdin or maybe “Kiss the Girl” from Little Mermaid…oh, the possibilities are endless…must go watch some Disney to refresh….I’ll be back, y’all.

Oh, and I love y’all hair this evening.

Anybody ever do à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Change the Worldà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ on Idol? Love that song, and as others suggested it would fit Kris well.

Chris Richardson from season six did it during inspirational songs week. Not that your average viewer would remember this. So I still think it’s a good pick for Kris. I love that song and I love Eric Clapton.

Somebody could also do “Have a Little Faith in Me” which was also on the Phenomenon soundtrack.

  • mcast345:

What about Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing from the Armeggedon Soundtrack for Adam. He’ll do that song amazingly!

  • LakesideUK:

I don’t think I’d want Adam to sing anything by Queen. Obviously he’d nail it but I don’t see how he could sound sufficiently different to the original not to attract the “karaoke” or “not-as-good-as-Freddie” comments.

I’d think I’d died and gone to heaven if he ever sang a Muse song on the Idol stage – I practically worship the ground Matt Bellamy walks on – but Supermassive Black Hole wouldn’t be ideal as the vocal line is to my mind a relatively minor part of what makes the track great. (If he ever gets a chance to sing “Unintended”, however, he should leap on it – that track is all about the soaring vocal and could have been written for him!)

Oh, and if he sings “My Heart Will Go On” I will be on the next plane out to L.A. to wring his silly neck. :O

I’ve discovered that “Dust in the Wind”, one of my favourite of his YouTubes, was featured in a film in 2003 (can’t remember which one now) so I suppose technically that would be within the theme, but it probably wouldn’t be good to do two slow, “spotlight” songs in a row. I’d still love to hear it though, if only to get my hands on a great studio version :D

I like the idea of him singing “Wicked Game” but if he gave it the Ring of Fire sensuous treatment I’m not sure A.I. the family show could cope :O

I don’t actually know what I want him to sing but I’m hoping he goes uptempo and vibrant. I think he should have reeled in enough dedicated supporters by now that he can afford to cut loose and let his freak flag fly for a week without coming to any harm – the judges would save him anyway if the unthinkable happened – because though subdued Adam is great he does need to keep those who like his more theatrical performances on board too.

I just hope the list they have to choose from isn’t as crappily narrow as I suspect…:(
