Going home…

Gina Glocksen

Michael Buble performed “Call Me Irresponsible.”

************
Tony Bennett has the sniffles and won’t be performing tonight.  That’s a shame, it would have been cool to have one of the last great old-school performers show the kids how it’s done.  Michael Buble steps in tonight to take his place.

This week’s Ford commercial goes green, featuring Kermit THE frog and Ford’s hybrid jeep.  Featured tune: “One Love.”

Ryan spills the details of the American Idol songwriters contest.  The winning song will be sung at the finale by this year’s American Idol.  More details can be found here.

Who will go home this week?  Ryan starts the process of elimination.  The kids are divided into 3 groups of 3.  Ryan explains that one group is the top 3, one is the middle 3 and the other is the bottom 3. Of “what” exactly, Ryan never explains…

The group stage left is Blake Lewis, Chris Richardson and Sanjaya Malakar.  In the middle are Haley Scarnato, Gina Glocksen and Phil Stacey.  Ryan calls each contestant out one by one, but does not send any back to safety until he gets to the third group, Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle and Lakisha Jones. After he calls them out he says, “As you know, this is where we take a break…normally…but not tonight!  You are all SAFE, have a seat.”

Ryan says “A lot of excitement tonight.”  But, as he walks by Haley, Gina and Phil, he says, “Not so much, here.”  Well, that’s obvious, considering the three likeliest contestants to be eliminated are all grouped together.

Ryan approaches Blake, Chris and Sanjaya and says, “You know you are not the top 3, but you are also not the bottom 3. You are safe…work a little bit harder for another week…congratulations, take a seat.

Haley, Gina and Phil are left on the stage.  Ryan says, “So America, that means this is your bottom 3 this week. But who is going home and who is safe?”  Gina and Phil are all smiles, while Haley looks really nervous.

Time for a break.

This week’s American Idol Challenge Winnah is in the audience.  She travelled to California all the way from Alaska to see this cheesy show.

This week’s question: “This American Idol finalist was jokingly referred to as ‘Chicken Little.’”  Was it, a. Kevin Covais, b. Bucky Covington, or c. Taylor Hicks.  Could these questions get any dumber?  Even Ryan acknowledges how dumb the questions are when he says, “I don’t come up with the questions.”

After explaining Tony Bennett’s absence, Ryan introduces Michael Buble, who delivers a snappy “Call Me Irresponsible.”

After the break, it’s time to find out who is going home.  Phil is declared safe, he goes back to the couches.  Haley and Gina are left on stage. Ryan asks the judges if they are surprised by the bottom 2.  Randy is surprised, particularly about Gina.  Paula mumbles a non-answer.  Simon is of course, not surprised.

Ryan says, “After the highest votes, this season, just under 33 million votes, Haley….you are STAYING for another week…which means Gina LEAVES us tonight, on American Idol.”

Haley and Gina hug each other and cry.  Jordin is crying.  People in the audience are booing. Haley goes back to the couches. Ryan tells Gina she’s been a lot of fun and will be missed.

After Gina’s goodbye package, she sings out, bittersweetly.  It’s a poignant moment.  Her singout of “Smile” with the fitting lyrics, “smile, though your heart is aching…” is actually brilliant.  Goodbye Gina.

Like I said in last night’s recap, Gina suffered from never finding a truly authentic identity on Idol.  The judges kept pushing her to be “edgy”, and instead of just being herself, she kept trying to shoehorn herself into this character the producers had written for her.  She certainly should have outlasted Haley, but she probably would have left the show by week 6 in any case.  Next week’s elimination will probably be Haley or Phil, but in the world of Idol, stranger things can happen, and often do.

I think Gina will do okay on the tour. If Chris S. opens the show, they can do a duet before she performs 2nd. It could be a rockin’ opening for the concerts…not that I plan on going this year. I’ll wait for the Sanjaya solo tour :laugh_tb:

Not a Haley fan in the slightest- but I do get an enourmous kick out of watching the pretty girl get all of the knocks for staying alive.

There is one contestant who is much worse, and several who are as mediocre as Haley- yet they aren’t getting blasted for outlasting Gina.

Gina did not deserve to go home yet, but honestly I don’t think she would have lasted much past top 6 or 7. The top 5 is pretty much cemented as Jordin, Melinda, Blake, Chris R, Sanjaya, and Lakisha.

The next few weeks are merely formalities.

  3. 53 marco5ny Apr 5th, 2007 at 2:31 am

I felt badly for Gina having to leave us especially considering the lyrics of her song. Wasn’t sure if she, or fans or the judges put the “rrrrocker” tag on her but I never thought it fit. Regardless, I thought she was okay and I’ll be curious to see where her career goes. I also like Haley. I like her voice and I think she’s cute. Sue me. Pretty surprised at the venom directed at the girl in an era where Hillary Duff sells 13 million CDs. I bought one of those too. And I like Phil. I think almost every mentor has commented on Phil’s voice and I agree. It’s nice. Lots of anger out there. I don’t get it. Once you make the tour, I don’t think it matters much when you get cut unless you win, place or show. 9 or 8 or 7 you can still get a record deal, an oscar or even a TV show.

No Bucky or Kellie in the bunch. And probably no Spanish speakers either….

Phil was stationed in Florida, so there’s a slight possibility he can sing in Spanish. I don’t care what he sings, as long as it is an uptempo song!

Gina was so good tonight. What a song to sing on a vote-out. Yes, I find Haley slightly annoying, but it was a cutesy performance if you view it a second time.

Is it possible that the upcoming themes may affect Melinda and Lakisha’s positive judging? I believe they want Jordin and Blake in the finals.

Gina was a class act last night and I’m sad she’s gone.

  6. 56 St.Lucia Apr 5th, 2007 at 7:26 am

I didn’t watch the results since my husband and I were watching something else. He did kindly flip back at about 3 till and I saw the bottom two consisting of Haley and Gina. I even said “Oh, Haley’s finally gone” and we flipped back and continued watching our show.

I didn’t even know until this morning that it was indeed Gina that left!

I was actually surprised because well, I felt pretty positive it was going to be Haley, but at the same time I’m not upset. I’d actually rather watch Haley move on another week than Gina. I think Gina’s biggest problem this week was that she was forgettable. I don’t think Gina knows who she is. Is she a girl with a big voice, or is she a rocker? Make up your mind. I never really cared for Gina anyway, although I definitely thougth she would have lasted a little longer. (Then again, I didn’t see Chris Sligh going last week either). Haley, on the other hand, had legs that were far more memorable than Gina, even if her song wasn’t. Actually, I don’t think Haley did that bad this week, for Haley. It wasn’t good compared to the rest, but it wasn’t entirely awful either. She doesn’t have the worst voice, but in this season she is entirely swamped by much bigger voices and better personalities than what she has to offer.

I guess we’ll see her legs one week longer.

    What’s the theme next week?

I feel very certain that TPTB are setting us up for a shocking elimination of either Lakisha or Jordin in the next 2 weeks. I definitely don’t believe the 3 girls were the top 3. I think Lakisha will be gone very soon and they will act like it is the biggest shock of all time.

Phil has a great voice. I think he is the most under rated contestant this year. Chris R is the most over rated. His performances are all horrible, but the judges say he’s great. Some people clearly listen to the judges too much and can’t make their own decisions.

I think Blake is the most commercial and will be very successful whether or not he wins.

  8. 58 Grammie Kari Apr 5th, 2007 at 8:02 am

Cathy, I so agree with your post! If the military votes start coming in, Phil may last a few more weeks.

I think once they get Chris R. in the studio, there is much they can do with his voice. Right now, it is weak and has a woodpecker vibrato (as someone said).

I still see Blake and Jordin in the finale regardless who the Top Three were this week!

  9. 59 calimari Apr 5th, 2007 at 8:40 am

The split of the 3 groups of 3 were not surprising, but I thought Gina would be back on the couch first & that Haley or Phil would be going home. They have both been in the bottom 3 before & Gina had not, I don’t think. She wasn’t going to win, but it seemeed early for her. In all honesty, I thought Michael Buble should have been voted off. Is it just me or was that awful? I had to change channels during his performance.

  10. 60 bean99 Apr 5th, 2007 at 9:05 am

I completely agree about Michael Buble, Calimari. I was sitting there wishing they’d asked Harry Connick Jr or almost anyone other than him. He made the idols look a lot better, lol.

Gtrplayer, they had 2 covers for People so that each group of 5 would have one just like TV Guide does. They had both at my store so I got the one with Blake on the cover (of course).

Of course Sanjaya should have gone home but I’ve become resigned to him staying longer. I have a problem with Haley staying because like Sanjaya, I’m not sure how she even made the top 24 let alone the top 8. She has an okay voice but is just like the ones you hear at a theme park or wedding (isn’t she a wedding singer?).

    Dov Cohen says

Everyone feels it - something very different has happened this season. Season six seems to have lost the magic. Let’s hope season seven will restore the fun and magic.

This season is a repeat of Season 3, where the judges will continually diss anyone who is NOT a diva. The fact that they are going after Phil and Blake so hard tells me that both of them are placing a lot higher than they wanted them to. Blake’s voice is good enough, but his singing and performance style are new and unique to AI and he’s very, very good. Phil’s voice alone is keeping him in the race (because we know it’s not his looks or his love of muzac.) Phil is incredibly talented as each and every guest mentor has pointed out. Too bad the judges are set on a diva-fest because it’s time for the best voice to win AI.

I still believe that either Lakisha or Jordin were in the bottom three and either Phil or Blake were in the top 3. But then AI just brings out the conspiracist in me …

    What’s the theme next week?

    J Lo - Latin.

  13. 63 Ladybug Apr 5th, 2007 at 9:22 am

I found Gina to be a far more interesting contestant than Haley, and she truly was very classy in her exit.

That said, it really doesn’t matter when anyone is sent home for lack of enough votes (NO one is “voted off”). They all go on tour. And AI will sign and promote anyone they want. It matters not a whit in which order they go.

There is one contestant who is much worse, and several who are as mediocre as Haley- yet they aren’t getting blasted for outlasting Gina.

I certainly agree. I think Sanjaya should have gone home a while ago and I wouldn’t be upset if Phil or Chris R went home before Hayley. Of course, I wouldn’t be upset if she went home before them either. I would have liked to see Gina outlast all of four of them.

Gina did not deserve to go home yet, but honestly I don’t think she would have lasted much past top 6 or 7. The top 5 is pretty much cemented as Jordin, Melinda, Blake, Chris R, Sanjaya, and Lakisha.

I think the top three is going to be Melinda, Jordin and Blake. After that although I think it is likely the other two of the top five will be from Chris R, Sanjaya and Lakisha I wouldn’t be surprised to see one or more of them get wacked pretty much any time from now going forward. So I think Gina might have made it to 5 or 4 if she wasn’t booted tonight, but I don’t think she had any realistic chance of making the finals.

Grammie Kari - Phil was stationed in Jacksonville, Fla., so if he speaks Spanish I’d say it’s because of some OTHER influence. Jacksonville is practically Georgia - it’s one of those rare SOUTHERN cities in Florida.

Oh yes it does. I am deprived of another week of Gina, Chris Sligh and forced to endure Sanjaya and “meek” Melinda and “sadsack” LaKisa.

You know I thought that might be the case, but I liked my theory that the other cover was too naughty for certain areas of the country. Oh well, lol.

    Me too. :cool1_tb:

We could be being set up for the traditional top 7 shocker(!)

Lakisha and Jordin have both been portayed as safe in recent weeks whilst apparently flirting with the lower end of the placings if DialIdol is to be believed, and in the meantime Phil has been portrayed as being in danger every week whilst riding pretty high on DI.

Let’s say Haley finally runs out of luck next week, then in top 7 elimination week when I imagine they will do their usual trick of separating the contestants into two groups of three and having the remaining person (who is safe) pick the safe group, Melinda will do the picking and the groups could consist of Lakisha, Jordin and Blake (L & B haven’t been bottom 3 at all and Jordin hasn’t been bottom since Leslie went) whilst the other has Phil, Sanjaya and Chris R, all of whom have been in the danger zone (supposedly).

Naturally Melinda stands with L,J and B only to find, shock! horror!, she is wrong! and one of them is leaving. Bye, Kiki/Jordin! Wow. Who saw that coming?! :ohmy_tb: :rolleyes_tb:

Heh. I think I’ve been watching this show too long…

  21. 71 lrlpalmer Apr 5th, 2007 at 12:14 pm

Of course Haley is better vocally than Sanjaya. You have to keep in mind that we all criticized Sanjaya’s performances early on. I guess at this point though, like Simon, we feel that when it comes to this kid our criticisms really don’t matter! Not to mention that it has admittedly become a rather enjoyable thing to watch Sanjaya’s versatile hairstyles and to see what new stunts he’s going to pull each week. He has brought humour back to the show. Though, it does make me sad to see great talents like Chris Sligh and Gina Glocksen suffer because of it. But that’s showbiz!

I “feel” that “Phil” (haha, you like that?) is underrated this season. He has become such an underdog. While his performances may be lacking in some areas, his vocals are impeccable about 90% of the time!

Now, Haley. Granted, the girl can carry a tune. I don’t claim that she’s a BAD singer. However, I think it’s important to remember that American Idol is a contest which SUPPOSEDLY showcases some of America’s greatest young talents. I swear I can think of about 10 of my friends who can sing/perform better than her, who can give you goosebumps and do so in a modest way. Haley, to me, is the definition of mediocrity and I just feel that she’d be better off entering a pageant or something. She could still sing during the talent portion of those competitions, and probably end up doing pretty good. But of course, if you want someone so utterly average to become America’s next “idol”.. then by all means. Vote. I’m Canadian so she won’t be representing me, anyways. :p

I completely agree about Michael Buble, Calimari. I was sitting there wishing they’d asked Harry Connick Jr or almost anyone other than him. He made the idols look a lot better, lol.

It sure sounded like he was struggling to get through the song. I thought it looked like he kept looking at the band, like maybe there was some miscommunication with the arrangement or wrong key or something. Seemed like a possibility considering the short notice. Or maybe he just sucked. :ponder_tb:

Heh. I think I’ve been watching this show too long…

LOL Lakeside, I wouldn’t be surprised if it plays out exactly like you’ve scripted it!

  23. 73 sonjavon Apr 5th, 2007 at 12:28 pm

    Nostradamus -

Let’s discuss the difference between Haley’s “bringing the girls out to play” and Lakisha doing the same….

First - when Haley wears a low cut shirt, she wears hemlines that are cut to indecent lengths for standing on a stage. Lakisha wears skirts to the knee or below and wears low cut dresses. The one time that she wore a short skirt - she was covered up to her neck.

Second - when Lakisha is complimented on her outfit she graciously says “thank you”. When Haley is complimented she says “nice”.

I admire the judges for not wanting to make Haley cry by telling her - “you don’t sing that well” - so they’re opting to find something nice to say - but she doesn’t want to hear it. I think next week they should say nothing.

I don’t think that it’s a racial thing at all. However, I WILL say that when one is revealing a lot of skin, being aware of the color of your skin and the contrast with your clothes is important- otherwise you appear to be showing much more than you actually are.

To the person who mentioned that Lakisha has bad taste in clothes - couldn’t disagree more. For a heavy set woman I think that she has done an amazing job of finding clothes that are flattering for her shape. I WANT that dress she wore this week….

  24. 74 LoveU Apr 5th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Hey, does anyone else wonder if Tony Bennett was REALLY sick, or if he was just irritated by most of the contestants ignoring his advice? (Just wondering).

You would think after 6 seasons I would be used to this, but I can’t help but wonder what the show would be like if TPTB really chose THE BEST singers they could find. Wow, wouldn’t that be interesting??!! No one can reasonably say that Sanjaya or Haley or Chris R. are among the best undiscovered talents in America. I always think of Randy saying during the auditions, “We’re looking for the best!”. Yeah, whatever.

What really gets me about Haley how she cries every single week. She is more than tiresome.

Melinda is excellent (why does she not get any comments about how old she seems when Taylor got heck for that all the time?) but she is starting to come off as diningenuous. The more I see Jordin, the more I like her.

  25. 75 ParkAvenue Apr 5th, 2007 at 12:35 pm

I liked Gina but I think the song she sang this week was a little boring. She’s definitely not the worst though. Sanjaya and Haley were worse. I can’t imagine if one or both of those 2 advances into the Top 5; I think American Idol will be canceled or something (like Pop Idol) and get replaced with Yo-Factor (X-Factor in the UK).

  26. 76 SpenserJ Apr 5th, 2007 at 12:39 pm

I don’t think Haley is getting a bad rap because she’s pretty. There are tons of pretty girls in the world and a lot of them have talent. Haley is just woefully outclassed on this show and her performances kind of suck.

Plus, by showing up in exceedingly short skirts and low cut tops (she even wore hot pants for the People magazine article) I think she’s conveying very clearly that she intends to use her assets to get her further along. Which is fine if that’s the road she wants to take. But, when you take that road, you cannot then be surprised that people call you on it.

Like someone mentioned above, if you’re revealing on top - you should cover up on bottom and vice versa. Never do both. That is the difference between sexy and skanky.

Every reporter in America has come out of the woodwork to say Sanjaya sucks. And, I personally believe that Phil & Chris R. take more shit on the blog than anyone else. So, I don’t think Haley is getting more than her fair share of snark just because she’s pretty.

    fast tv ratings:

Though down some from last week, the “American Idol” results show, 15.1/24, and “‘Til Death,” 8.5/13, still ruled the 9 p.m. hour for FOX. CBS stayed in second with a “Criminal Minds” rerun, 6.7/11. “Crossing Jordan,” 5.0/8, was third for NBC, beating ABC’s “According to Jim,” 3.7/6, and “In Case of Emergency,” 3.3/5. The CW reran Tuesday’s episode of “The Search for the Next Doll.”

  29. 79 maheshg Apr 5th, 2007 at 2:16 pm

I thought Gina was exceptional on her singout and will miss her. Ironically, based on her rendition of Smile, she could have provided the one genre Idol is missing this year: country. She has a big fat voice that is very controlled, and her rock look has very little to do with her natural home base– which is heartfelt ballads.

She is as much of a rocker as Constantine was– not at all.

Buble was okay in my book– saw him on Oprah, and I was surprised to discover that his vocal instrument just isn’t that good. He is all stage presence and performance.

    The arrangement was smokin, though.

  30. 80 Sunny D Apr 5th, 2007 at 3:42 pm

Every week we will be sad that someone is leaving. Gina sang well but her look did not match the song and her look was sort of “wanna be rocker”…not believeable. I liked Haley and I don’t think her clothes are inappropriate. I don’t understand why the pretty girls get all the crap thrown at them on this show.

    Wonder who’s going next????

  31. 81 bean99 Apr 6th, 2007 at 9:48 am

Haley is only a mediocre singer who in no way should be in the top 8. The reason that she’s there imo is that she started dressing differently in order to stand out because she couldn’t from her singing. This is annoying to many people and isn’t because she’s pretty (I don’t think she’s all that myself except for great legs). Kat, on the other hand, was a very good singer albeit one who seemed to have trouble performing well in the competition. She mostly wore jeans and what the others wore other than one memorable yellow dress. She’s also annoying to many but again it’s not her looks but her personality.

Melinda, Chris S, & Phil have gotten a lot of comments due to their looks and/or body type so I find it hard to feel sorry for a “pretty” girl.

  32. 82 MOMster Apr 7th, 2007 at 12:16 am

  33. 83 Grammie Kari Apr 7th, 2007 at 6:57 am

Many realize that AI scripts the show. There is always the pretty girl and usually she’ll wear something revealing because she can get away with it. Why? Because this girl has a nice figure. They must have someone the teen boys can drool over, and it is NOT Melinda and Lakisha. Right now, Jordin is the “sweet girl next door”, although that can change.

Haley fit the requirements for this character. At least that’s how I see it. :smile_wp:

    Thanks, dixiemedley!
