I liked the guy who sang I Will Always Love you - remember in “Bodyguard” when Whitney and Kevin were dancing to it in that bar?? Woulda been nice to hear a guy attempt it on the show…
I’m a Jason fan, and I’M worried!
I can just hear Simon now. “I didn’t like it. I didn’t know that song. It was all a bit of troubadour in the park with his guitar case open, etc., etc., etc.”
Terrie – I agree with you assessment of the camerawork on Jason last week. It didn’t help him at all.
SpenserJ – Just to let you know, they don’t know anything at idolforums. They’re not allowed to post spoilers, but knowing Syesha, she WILL to it Whitney style.
Let’s take bets on whether Randy will mention Whitney tonight!
I’m getting way too invested in whether DC does well. ::is nervous::
I also feel kind of dumb because I know almost none of those songs!
When I was a little girl, I remember watching Dolly sing IWALY every week on her show. That song always touched me. I really dislike the way Whitney diva’d it up. Sure, it was vocally awesome but it took away the simple sweetness of it. I would rather listen to feelings that vocal gymnastics any day of the week. *stares pointedly at Syesha*
Well I’m excited about Jason singing Travein’ Thru, although I would have loved for him to sing IWALY.
Just looking at song choice alone….I bet everyone is overshadowed by David Cook again. If he sings a capella , ala Bo Bice “In a Dream”, then well, the night goes to him. Of course, he needs to hit all the right notes. Tiny detail.
david cook gets the pimp spot twice?!?!?!?!?!?!?! What is this?!?! At least now those Archy haters can leave him alone for the one being pimped
You know, I really hope Dolly tangles with Simon somehow. Gawd that would be pure gold! She’s such a hoot! Can we just keep her for another week instead of having “I whistle with my throat” Mariah??
I don’t think DC got the pimp spot again… the spoilers aren’t necessarily in the right order. That’s just how they’re presented.
Again - TMZ has *never* been right on the order of performances, only the song choice.
I HIGHLY doubt that is the performance order.
dukester, dude, can i suggest reading the multiple comments explaining that the songs are not listed in order?
(heh, too slow. all together now!)
Sigh. TMZ doesn’t post the song order. READ THE THREAD. Don’t start problems where there aren’t any.
And please don’t call people “haters”, it’s really OTT. This isn’t a fan site.
OTT = over the top
Over the top.
By the way, the version of “I Will Always Love You” I was most familiar with before Whitney’s was Linda Ronstadt’s
I’m not a country music fan, but I like Dolly and enjoy her crossover (pop) hits. Almost all but two of these choices are unfamiliar to me. And I haven’t checked youtube because I want to take the opportunity not to form preconceptions of how they “should” be sung.
Some things that need to happen:
Jason has to ixnay the band and emote.
Syesha needs to NOT do the Whitney version.
Ramiele needs a homerun or I officially give up on her.
Carly has to leave the spanx at home. No histrionics or crazy eyes, please.
Michael needs to BRING IT again this week, or we’ll know last week was a fluke.
David A. needs to shake off the gossip and sing his heart out.
David C. needs a new hairstyle.
Brooke has to figure out how to sing without an instrument AND without looking goofy.
Kristy Lee has to get off my TeeVee.
TY
(i know some “typo-nese”)
Ok so I’ve heard almost every song on this and if I haven’t I just went and listened. I’m actually a big Dolly Parton and I’m going to see her in concert in May. With that said here is my take even though I haven’t heard them sing.
David Archuleta: Another booooring song from him. This song is so slow and it’s kind of boring when Dolly sings it. I have no doubt he’ll sing it good though.
Syesha-I called this when I heard they were doing Dolly this week. Syesha is not Whitney nor should she try to be. BTW I like Dolly’s version better than Whitney’s. They are very different. Dolly is more sincere.
Carly-As long as she doesn’t scream this, she’ll be fine.
Kristy-Very safe song and considering it’s country she will probably do well and we’ll be subjected to her for another week.
Ramiele-This song was actually a duet with Randy Travis and it’s very bluegrass. I don’t know if Rami can handle it.
Michael-This song is slow too. I’m curious to know why Michael picked it. I’m on the fence with this one.
Jason-This song is very upbeat. I hope he doesn’t have his guitar even though the song may warrant it. I think it takes away from him and we may be bored.
Brooke-Singing one of my favorites. I honestly thought David Cook would sing Jolene since The White Stripes did a pretty awesome cover of Jolene. Their version was so obscure though, David probably doesn’t know it exists. I hope Brooke puts some energy into it considering she is my favorite of the girls.
David Cook-Now I like David Cook and all but I think he is going to murder this song once he changes it into a rock song. It’s a spiritual song and the arrangement should not be messed up with it too much and I fear he is going to rockify and I am going to hate it.
Again, this is based on what I know about the songs and past performances from the contestants. My real opinion will happen after I hear them.
Oh - that’s a good one. I love me some Rondstadt.
ETA: Metta, I agree with everything you’ve said. And, you’re looking lovely tonight. And, I’ve missed you since I’ve been gone :) So, hello friend!
I think he’ll stick to the a cappella with this one, actually — he’s smart enough to. At least, I hope he is. I Youtube-d it for a while and found nothing but Dolly’s version, and someone else racked iTunes and didn’t find anything either. So he’s alone on this one.

Well if he sticks to acappella it may be fine but he has to hit all the right notes and I’m not so sure if his voice can handle that but time will tell.
Ah memories. In the 80’s I put the Linda Ronstadt version on a mixtape that I made for a boyfriend who broke my heart. I loved that version.
Oh, I don’t know if it’s obscure…. Wasn’t this a single? And the White Stripes are huge. Quite frankly, I’d be disappointed if David Cook wasn’t aware of this version even if he wasn’t a fan of the Stripes.
One thing I’ve noticed - the contestants sing in the order they are first introduced by Ryan at the beginning of the show.
There is one non-country cover of “Little Sparrow” out there by soul/blues singer Bettye LeVette, but it’s not really in David’s comfort zone any more than the original. I hope he sticks to the original with at least the acapella opening.
A reliable spoiler on IDF reported that Syesha is singing 8th and they’re bringing a piano on stage for her (which she may be sitting on. ugh)
I think he has the voice to handle it. From all I’ve heard of his singing, he has a pretty incredible range.
Me too. Even if he doesn’t do the whole song acapella, it would still give me goosebumps.
Bettye Lavette has a bluesy soul version that sounded pretty good- I had to listen a few time to make sure it was the same lyrics.
oops-cheese beat me to it
Ohhhh, NostraD, “Falling Out of Love With Me”….whooo, that is some flipping song…one of the reasons why Dolly is such a genius.
The poetic structure…so tied in with the truth of that song; the way she repeats phrases the way we go over and over things in our minds…
Or in “Jolene,” the way the title name is repeated and repeated in rising panic, further and further up on the scale…
These are the things that say what an intuitive artist she is, and how she has been touched with genius to be able to express these things so vividly in the language of music.
Joan Osborne does a nonbluegrass version of Ramielle’s song.
oh Ryan, u silly dwarf
He’s got Dolly to help him with it, too; she’ll be there to tell him to go down/up a half-step or whatever so the song brings out the most in his range.
I can’t hear Cookie singing blues, or soul for that matter. It’s a nice cover; I just can’t imagine him singing it.
ETA: LMAO @ RYAN. It sounded too good to be true…xD
Oh, I was right when I thought Brooke was going acoustic with “Jolene”. Hmm.
…I’m scared of Cookie’s new hairstyle. I almost wished he’d kept the combover look right now.
Looks liked they purtied up Cookie - new hair, little beard growth - looks more mainstream I guess.
He sounded great to me by the way. I liked the arrangement.
