And what the hell? When did it become such a big deal for a kid in showbiz to be home schooled? David Archuleta hasn’t enrolled at Murray High this year. What a bulletin! Nobody made a big deal when Jordin Sparks didn’t return to high school last year. The latest on this Big Piece of News! is that David will probably not return to Murray High, but will be able to walk with his class at graduation.

Poor Archie. The media has one story about him. He’s the victim of an evil Dad. That’s it. I guess Jordin’s dad (the football player) got a pass when she did the exact same thing. It seems like his school is making an effort to work it out so he’ll get a diploma from them. His back up plan is being a doctor so this will be important to him.
This is another reason why AI should never drop the minimum age to 14 or even lower.

I feel sorry for Archie in a way. He, his family, and school district are handling it very well though.
Jordin got a pass for the most part because she seemed more mature, so even though we were constantly reminded of her age, nobody questioned much about her. Frankly there is something to be said for being a dark horse as frontrunners bear the brunt of negative media.
Archie will march with his class in 2009 and it will be a media event. I hope they are planning for this now.
I am all for education, as I have a daughter Archie’s age. I also know that he cannot let this opportunity pass him by just to prove a point to some who would rather he make a statement instead of doing what is right for him.
actual Jordin had a tutor a year or so before she did Idol and continued with that through this year when she graduated .
I would bet my soul that archie doesnt return to school. I would be disappointed if he did. I know everyone says education is important, which it is, but when you are given an opportunity like this, school should become secondary.

Well, talk about making news out of something that isn’t. This is so ridiculous. He’s not doing anything differently than any of the other 17 year olds in similar situations.
Archie is basically the contestant the tabloids have chosen to pick on this year–even when he hasn’t done anything newsworthy. I mean, I expect a rag like TMZ to start following Cook when he goes out on a date or parties at a club. That’s what they do. But running a story about a recording artist being home schooled because he’s, you know, recording and promoting? That’s not a story. It’s obvious. But they take it, spin it so they can once again pick on his Dad and all the other online tabloids (and some legitimate media) pick it up. All of a sudden Archie is a high school dropout and a bad example to all kids.
Ridiculous.
I can’t say that I’m surprised, but I rather hope for his sake that he gets to attend at least some of his senior year. I’ve gotten a vibe from him that he has not gotten to experience a lot of the typical experiences from being a kid/teenager. It seems like getting to experience senior year would be healthy for him.
Funny you say that Jenn_, I have read that he use to attend dances at Murray High, and did lots of other talent shows and stuff at school. Frankly for the sake of the other students I hope that he is cognizant of them when chosing what to do, or not to do when it comes to school. They can’t be made to feel that it’s all about him when his classmates will be seniors too.
Nobody said school is secondary. If you’ve heard any of Archie’s interviews, he certainly hasn’t intimated that. As a mostly A student he certainly hasn’t acted like it’s secondary.
I hope poor Archie is getting used to having every inch of his life discussed. In case whoever put this blurb out doesn’t realize it, homeschooling has become quite popular in this country. It certainly does not imply that education is secondary to anything else. I think for any teen that has a clear-cut idea of what they want to do with their life outside of attending high school and partaking of those experiences, homeschooling is an excellent way to accomplish these goals.

i agree it should not be a big deal. afterall he would probably be mobbed every day at school and it would be a distraction so it might be best if he does not go back . though if he continued with a tutor like Jordin did the issue would more likely go away.

In my opinion, it’s perception. Jordin, while OMG 17! (tm R.Jackson) she seemed much older. She was very poised and mature for a teenager. David, while the same age, seems younger than he actually is. He’s smallish and giggly and comes across more like 14 or 15.
It seems to me from most of the interviews I’ve seen post-Idol, that he is completely ready to move on with his life. He has been preparing and wanting this his entire life so the choice seems pretty obvious - record and promote your album or attend your last year of High School? Lots of kids graduate early just to remove themselves from that last year and I don’t think David will regret his choice.
It seems similar to all the flap they made about him not getting to go to prom. Miss a dance or be on American Idol? I think he is well aware he can’t do both and is happy with the music choice. Somehow the press thinks this is so scandalous. At least it’s good news for Archie however - media is trying desperately to find anything to print about him, even if it’s really a non-story.
I did laugh at all the Home-schoolers getting up in arms about one of the articles saying that Homeschooling was tantamount to dropping out. In light of the discussion about rabid fans on the other thread, it was funny to see that Idol fans are not the only ones who get defensive about their ’cause!’

Actually, I think he acts a lot like a 17 year old boy. Girls mature faster than guys. I remember my first year in college and the Freshmen guys were babies compared to the girls. The Senior guys, however, were MEN. It’s amazing how much changes in those 4 years. And Archie is still a year off from being college-age.
Jordin was more socially mature, as most girls are her age (although her favorite song was still “MMMBop” and she did giggle a lot), but as for intellectual and emotional maturity, I think they were at the same stage during their respective Idol runs. Adults have a tough time handling the pressure of AI, so to stay grounded and poised, as both of them did, takes great maturity for 17-year-olds. He may not know how to express himself as well as Jordin did at that age, but if you listen to what he’s saying in interviews (especially when he’s interviewed one-on-one), it’s often more intelligent, thoughtful and grounded than what you would hear from a lot of guys his age.
My son is 17 although almost 18 and he seems much more mature than DA but they have very different personalities. I think it’s too bad that he won’t be going back for his senior tour but you’ve got to strike while the iron is hot and he has a record to make.
