X Factor – Week 5 Performance – VIDEO

Tonight’s best performances came from Lucie Jones and Danyl Johnson. And another lulzworthy performance from John and Edward.   It’s time for Lloyd Daniels to leave.   Hopefully, he gets the boot tomorrow.

Week 5 is Movie Week at X Factor.   Check out the performances and my recap after the JUMP…

Videos after the JUMP…

  • Stacey Soloman ‘“ “Son Of A Preacher Man” by Dusty Springfield – Stacie sounded lazy and just under pitch through the whole song. The makeover was nice. – VIDEO
  • Olly Murs ‘“ “Twist and Shout” – Wow. Simon sure judges peeps differently across the pond. In the US, Olly would be like your drunk uncle dancing at a wedding, in the UK, it’s a great show and entertainment!   I’m not sure where Olly can take his shtick beyond the show, but I like him.   He’s fun to watch. –   VIDEO
  • Lloyd Daniels – “Stand By Me” by Ben E. King –   Not as dire as last week. But Lloyd and his pitchy, choppy, awkward runs, is really hard to watch. It’s time for him to go. – VIDEO
  • Jamie Archer ‘“ “Cryin”" by Roy Orbison –   In earlier rounds, Jamie’s showmanship masked below par vocals. Now, when he’s front and center, and his vocal has to carry the day, the flaws are obvious.   The song was way too rangy for him. –   VIDEO
  • Lucie Jones – “This Is Me” by Demi Lovato – When Lucie has the right song, she sounds fresh contemporary and radio ready.   Lucie is definitely a contender. –   VIDEO
  • Danyl Johnson ‘“ “Purple Rain” by Prince –   Danyl hasn’t sounded this good since his audition.   Attempting iconic songs like “Purple Rain” is a big risk, and Danyl pulled it off. To quote a cliche, he made the song his own. – VIDEO
  • John and Edward ‘“ “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker – GO JEDWARD!   They really, really suck, but I love them! I’d be cool with Stacey, Lloyd, Jamie or Joe going before these guys. They entertain me. – VIDEO
  • Joe McElderry ‘“   “Circle Of Life” by Elton John – Joe is a nice boy with a nice voice. Zzzzz… – VIDEO

Okay, now that I can listen to these song in full, and the rest of the night.

Stacey was vocally eekkk, about on par with Lloyd, which is to say not good. Very flat in most parts. If there was a bottom three on the show, vocally I would put her there based on that performance. Yes, she was “sexy,” and walked about the stage more, okay, vocally was pretty darn weak.

Jedewar, what to say about Jedward, but that wasn’t a vocal performance, that was a piece of theatre and funny as it was, how would that ever translate to making records? On the other hand, just for the fun and sheer and utter crack-assery, I would keep them in the competition and get rid of Lloyd and Stacey before them. Well if Stacey continues to sing as badly as she did today, at least Jedeward bring the lulz in addition to their bad singing. Stacey and Lloyd contribute only bad/mediocre singing.

Oh and Danii calling the choreo for Olly’s number Thriller like? Uh whatever, it was taken directly from the film and as the theme of the night was the films, uh yeah.

  • Jae:

Wow. The judging for this show is so different from AI! I liked jamie archer at his audition but this performance wasn’t good at all. His vocal was terrible. And he got a standing O from Simon??? And those other judges thought this was one of his best performances??? Amazing.

I really liked Danyl’s take on Prince. I think he did a great job with that song.

    Those twins were bad.

my connections were wonky so i didn’t get to see the rest.

  • Mark:

And what the hell was Louis’s problem with it being cheating? It was in the film Gummo, as Simon correctly pointed out, was on the soundtrack for the film and indeed in the film they discuss the song. Shut up, Louis. Cult films do too count. I would call Simon on his choosing songs that were’t big band, like the one for Jamie a few weeks ago, but this is a legitimate choice.

Agreed. I got the big band song choice criticism, and some of the rock week ones (even if I just might have let a few slide), but I didn’t get this one at all. Even his criticism of the “Circle of Life” considering where it was “better known”… I mean, come on.

Wow. Simon sure judges peeps differently across the pond. In the US, Olly would be like your drunk uncle dancing at a wedding, in the UK, it’s a great show and entertainment!

Indeed. It’s all extremely strange to watch. Usually, camp isn’t his thing, but it’ doesn’t seem to bother him at all in the UK. Not really sure how I feel about that.

  • shell29:

Stacey: Didn’t enjoy that. I think she should leave this week.
Olly: I really enjoyed his performance! Very fun, and I liked the Thriller dance moves.
Lloyd: Eh. He needs to go as well, but I won’t be surprised if he lasts another week.
Jamie: I guess I’ll be in the minority with this, but I really liked Jamie’s performance this week. I thought he did a pretty good job.
Lucie: I agree with MJ. Really nice job and she’s certainly a contender.
Danyl: The bulk of the performance was OK, but then he had to go and f it up at the end. Ugh. It was still one of his better performances though, but I’m still not a fan of his voice. I love his new haircut though.
JEDWARD: Oh, these guys make me smile. They are so horrible yet so entertaining. I don’t know what else to say about that performance tonight. I just hope they stay.
Joe: Seems like a sweet guy and has a nice voice, but boring.

  • k0ka:

Watched videos for the first time. Do not they have age limit there ? It looks like Star Search for me.

  • sue:

Love Lucie and Olly again! They just have star quality. Is it me or does Olly look like Billy Bush tonight, hahhaha. Anyway he does need a better haircut. The song was kind of silly for Olly but he is just so much fun to watch. I guess Danyl was pretty good this week but I can’t imagine anyone singing “Purple Rain” besides Prince. It’s just not right.

Joe was boring as heck but he seems like a really sweet kid. Jedward was fun to watch. Jamie was awful, what the heck was that. I love Orbison and I think he ruin that song. Stacey looks much better this week but her singing is so all over the place. Lloyd, the boy is adorable but he can’t since worth crap, sorry.

So going home will probably be Stacey or Lloyd. What is up with the judges standing up so much. I guess they think every performance deserves a standing “O”. I like the judges bitching about song choice, lolz….They can’t blame the contestants, hahha..

  • khomphuong:

THe more i see X Factor, the more i hate Simon. Especially when he over praises Danyl ..

  • cheesehead:

its so strange, i didnt enjoy davidA his year but im loving joe on xfactor?! i dont get it, i thought i hated the cutesy male tweenstar type ?
or is it b/c archie was a threat to my cookie? *confused* @_@

  • erinnthered:

Dude, you have to watch their Toxic, it’s their best work to date. I just’ ¦you have to see it to believe it.

OMG! They’ve done two Britney songs! I love them already. Off to YT…

  • ghl:

This year’s X- factor is a joke. Especially the twins who never sing in harmony with no vocal talent whatsoever should go home. If the singing competition is all about entertainment, anybody should be able to win because learning performance and entertaining is not that hard, but finding rare vocal talent is hard.

Lloyd reminds me of David A’s Stand By Me and I think those judges have already watched DA’s performance last year and compared them. heh.

  • Ok, after watching all but Olly’s video since I couldn’t get it to work, here are my personal opinions…

Stacey – Looked great but the song and definately her performance bored me to tears.

Lloyd – No, No, and No!! He’s absolutely adorable so I can see why the little girls love him but gawwd that was absolutely cringe worthy to me.

Jamie – He’s been one of my faves from the beginning but I think it’s because his performance skills are way beyond anyone else on this show right now. His voice is usually not bad but this song was sooo wrong for him on so many levels.

Lucie – LOVE HER!!! She was my favorite girl from the very beginning and still is. She looked and sounded great and her performance skills keep getting better in my opinion. I still think she needs to not be so shy.

Danyl – He was one of my favorites at the beginning and then he started getting on my nerves so he lost me there for awhile. BUT, this performance was the best I think he’s done yet. I love the song so that helped alot.

Jedward – I am still laughing my ass off over this!! As much as I hate to say it, they are entertaining even if they can’t sing so I don’t think they are leaving just yet.

Joe – Cute kid and all but damn I really want to wipe the smile off his face!! *lol* He does have a good voice. I just don’t see him as a pop star. Going by his mannerisms, he seems more suited for musicals, big band music, etc. As far as looks, He reminds me alot of a young Harry Connick Jr.

  • ptslittlecomment:

I don’t get the objection to the song that Jamie sang. The theme was movies right? That song was in Mullholland Drive and Hiding Out. Roy Orbison and KD Lang won a Grammy for their duet for the Hiding Out soundtrack. Why did the judges accuse Simon of cheating

  • alxsavage:

Boring show, maybe it’s because I’m not really into any of the singers.

It’s terrible to admit that the only performance I could complete was John and Edward’s. They are fun, they truly have no shame.

Danyl is a fine singer, I don’t know why I can’t get myself to like him. Maybe it’s just not my favorite kind of voice, no matter how good it is.

It’s really hard to believe these were the best singer/performers they could find…

Am I the only one who finds the whole back up dancers thing extremely cheesy?

  • lica:

Now I finally watched everything (lost Stacie last night), these are my thoughts:
Stacie – I shouldn’t have decided to watch it. I would be better of without it. She looked good, but the performance was very weak.
Olly – I agree he should sing a different song style, but I loved it. I love the performance and the dancing. And Dannii should watch Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Simon said before the performance this was one of his favorite movies. I thought it was funny.
Lloyd – No, no, no. Should go home tonight. It was horrible. The kid is good looking but can’t sing. Period.
Jamie Archer – I don’t like him or his performance. But it is a song that is in a movie Louis, so shut up.
Lucie – She is incredible but this song is meh. She did well, she is a star, but I really think she could be given a better (Disney) song.
Danyl – I liked it, he is still a little bit lost on confidence (the new hair and all… But he is good looking either way), but I think it was good enough to keep him on the show.
John & Edward – I agree with Simon – this was a good song choice. It was really funny, and as this song does not demand a singer, can be sung by anyone, including them. I think it’s time for Louis to admit his defeat and stop trying to overcriticize the other contestants just because his act is the worst. John & Edward will continue as long as they’re entertaining and funny, but not prejudicing stronger acts like Lucie. Deal with it.
Joe – I like this kid. Yes it was boring (and Danyl was boring too), but I think he did great (should have interacted with the crowd more). I love Circle of Life, it was done for this movie, if it became a musical afterwards, it is not a demerit Louis. I think it was a good choice for him, and I think he is going to continue for some time.

About the judges – they need to be less defensive. Simon acts weren’t all great, so he should keep his butt on his chair. Dannii and Cheryl have only one good act in their groups, so they should make them go further and stop being so defensive of Stacie and Lloyd. They’re not in the same level, deal with it. And Louis should stop being a stupid idiot, he can make good comments about other contestants, and he should be honest that Jedward suck. They would win if it was a comedy competition, but it isn’t. They should have a TV show, like other UK TV presenters – Ant and Dec. I think it would be brilliant.

  • believeme:

Is the Joel guy is the one who sing ‘dancing with father’ during audition or something. This song (Elton John) and the audition song sound about the same. And if I remember clearly (I just watched the audition and this week) his look back then totally improved. But he looks like Hillary Swank when she acted as a girl pretending be a boy in Boy don’t cry or something like that. Great vocal, hmmmm no.

I enjoyed Jamie more than Danyl, I don’t like Prince but I like Prince singing Purple Rain. (May be the fact that he is pimping too much). That hair of Jamie needs to go. Lucie is boring on my ears.

How can Lloyd and the twins are there?

  • anijsch:

It’s really hard to believe these were the best singer/performers they could find’ ¦

Maybe the reason is that the really talented singers are still can make it in the UK the normal way and get signed without needing a TV show.

And Louis should stop being a stupid idiot, he can make good comments about other contestants, and he should be honest that Jedward suck. They would win if it was a comedy competition, but it isn’t. They should have a TV show, like other UK TV presenters ‘“ Ant and Dec. I think it would be brilliant.

Or Simon should take all this teenage contestants and make his own High school musical movie.

  • justjude:

Hah, we are all armchair critics and are therefore rather silly in some of our pronouncements which should probably sound more like just ……opinions.
    So in my opinion:
I really liked Jamie Archer Best this week. His lower register was not that strong, but, it had, for me, the advantage of sounding very emotionally vulnerable, and therefore grabbed me by by the heart. He sounded great on the big notes and he fit this song to his personality.
Very few can sing this like Orbison or KD and I still loved it.
2nd for me was Danyl. I felt his great vocal but am slightly put off by his
slightly sulky personality, and the expression in his eyes….yikes!
3rd. Lucie sounded as Simon said young and relevant. She sang it well, and she moved very well. Sounded and looked like a popstar.Meh!
4th Like the crowd there, I couldn’t help it,but, I really enjoyed Olly.
He is very entertaining and is a fairly good singer. He, to me seems the most comfortable in his own skin and while confident, he is not overly
    chuffed with himself.
5th. Joe who is a obviouly nice Kid with a really nice strong voice but who loses in the charisma dept. He is almost too sweet and earnest
and life is unfair to give him “so much”, only, to not give him enough….if that makes any sense?
6th. Stacie…..Looked lovely and slinky but never really got off the ground with her vocal….Just slight out of tune and had diminished
personality. At one point I wondered if she was on a sedative for her
nerves or shyness as there was a droid like feel throughout.
7th. and 8th John and Edward/ Lloyd…. take your pick but both should
be, I think, in the bottom 2 and really who cares who goes home as none of them can sing but the twins can entertain just slightly. Lloyed is just smart enough to look embarassed. So put this poor kid out of his misery please!!!!!

Appropriately enough, whoops! No, I meant their Oops I Did It Again, performance, which to me is their pinnacle of WTFery.

  • fadetowhite:

Has S Cowell really not worked out that overpimping contestants on his reality shows does them no favours yet!?

    As for the contestants.

I enjoy watching Olly – not sure that he would translate successfully beyond the show.

Don’t take to Danyl – he can sing, but he leaves me cold.

Lucy’s quite good, but lacks power.

I warm to Joe as well and I also didn’t like DavidA on Idol (though I warmed to him more as a personality after the show was over). Strange that. But again, I can’t imagine liking Joe as a performer outside of the show, though I could see him having a career (much like Archie actually).

I don’t think much of anyone else at all.

  • mj:

FYI: A couple of the links were broken…I fixed them.

  • ghl:

During season 7, I was in awe at David A’s vocal purity, power, ranges and skills at such a young age. But I am more in awe at his development as an artist after the idol. His timid demeanors disappear on stage, and he becomes a completely different performer.

He runs, jumps, dances from far left to far right on stage, interacts with audience, plays keyboard letting out his powerful vocals or just sings quiet ballads acoustically sitting on a chair with his hearts out. It is well known that he doesn’t sing a song in the same way he sang before, always twisting parts.

I strongly believe he will have a long career making music just like his idols, John Mayer and Jason Mraz. His song writer choices for his second pop album show a different route for his musical direction compared to the debut album.

  • chocobosandwich:

I’m kind of new to X-factor, so excuse me if I may sound a bit wet behind the ears. From watching the video performances, why does the show sound like it was recorded using the family handycam? And why is Simon smiling at some of these performances that probably wouldn’t even make it past AI auditions?
