When Adele teased a bit of her song “When We Were Young” on a promo for her upcoming interview with Australia’s 60 minutes, fans went kind of crazy! Now, a full version of the song has been released on Tuesday via VEVO.
Co-written with Tobias Jesso Jr., the video for the song was directed by Paul Dugdale and taped at The Church Studios in London, where some of the tracks for Adele’s third album, 25, were recorded.
Speaking to SiriusXM Monday, Adele said the song was about attending a party when you were older and “seeing everyone that you’ve ever fallen out with, everyone that you’ve ever loved, everyone that you’ve never loved, and stuff like that. And where you can’t find the time to be in each other lives and you’re all thrown together at this party when you’re like 50, and it doesn’t matter and you have so much fun and you feel like you’re 15 again. So, that’s the kind of vibe of it, really. The lyric is like, ‘Let me photograph you now /Let me photograph you in the light in case this is the last time.’ My favorite lyric in it is, ‘You look like a movie, you sound like a song / My god this reminds me of when we were young.'”
She sings the song beautifully, but at 25, she doesn’t fully grasp what it is too look back on a lifetime of relationships and experiences. When I first listened, I thought she was singing about being old at 25, and hating getting older. And I’m thinking, “Honey, you are not old…just wait.” But now that I know what the song really means, I think she’s too young to sing it.
