America’s Got Talent 2023 kicks off with a Beyonce loving shadow artist
America’s Got Talent 2023 is almost here. The new season premieres on NBC Tuesday May 30, and finally, fans get a first look at an act from the first audition episode.
Shadow Ace, from the Philippines, bounds energetically on the stage. “I’m going to revive a lost art,” he declares to the judges. It’s “shadow art” which isn’t really lost? At least not on the Got Talent shows!
Shadow explains that as a kid growing up, his family didn’t have electric power in their house. “It’s like an entertainment for me using candle lights in a wall.” He’s SURE his act could be a Las Vega or an arena show.
However, his favorite artist does not come from the shadow arts. He loves Beyonce. “I know that Beyonce is watching America’s Got Talent.” Uhm…probably not? “Hi queen!” he waves. He then explains why he believes Beyonce is watching. She invited last year’s winners, the Arabian dance troop Mayas, to perform with her in Dubai. He’s hoping that AGT leads him to fulfill one of his biggest dreams–meeting Beyonce. A colleague or employee probably brought Mayyas to Beyonce’s attention. But why ruin the guy’s fantasy, right?
As far as shadow puppetry is concerned, his fingers are very deft, mimicking a woman looking at herself in the mirror, before climbing a dance pole. And then suddenly the narrative turns dark as a male enters the picture and begins pushing her. She turns around, he pulls her ponytail, she turns back around and knocks him. The audience erupts in laughter. OK then.
Wrecking Ball and Gangnam Style
She picks up a wine bottle and tosses it back. As Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” plays, a swinging construction ball appears and the woman mimics the famous music video. She ends by taking scissors and cutting off her pony tail.
The hands are now a galloping horse, and ends with “Gangnam Style.” It’s the weirdest shadow art ever featured on AGT, feel pretty confident about that.
The crowd cheers. Judge Simon Cowell gives the act two thumbs up. And to find out what Simon, Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara think of Shadow Ace, fans will have to tune into NBC on Tuesday May 30 at 8 pm ET/PT to find out.
