America’s Got Talent Audition: Sofia Vergara Calls Schumacher “Ridiculous” but Gives Them a Golden Buzzer
Week 7 of auditions for America’s Got Talent Season 19 was an interesting one to say the least. It had some talent that was a bit left field including Sofia Vergara’s Golden Buzzer choice, a comedy act called Schumacher.
Mid-episode, we meet Ryu and Yuya of Schumacher. They traveled to America for the first time from Japan. After calling America and the judges both “beautiful,” Simon Cowell jokes that they are “beautiful as well.” Schumacher has been at it for 10 years, but they have never performed their act outside of Japan. The two met in school. They get a bit of a false start with their act when Howie Mandel tells them to go, but they finally get into the act.
One of them takes their dress clothes off revealing a one piece white outfit. The other assists. He puts a dog mask on the one with the white outfit, and the one in white poses and barks like a dog. The next iteration is a zebra and then a unicorn. The unicorn pops a balloon with its horn. Finally the two become a giraffe. It’s all pretty ridiculous, but somehow the judges and crowd are laughing.
Simon Cowell calls the act “genius”
The panel gave the duo a standing ovation. Simon called the act “genius” and “really funny.” He asked whose idea it was and suggested that they couldn’t have had the same idea at the same moment. But they insist they did. The two joked that they only talked about who would be on top for the giraffe part.
Sofia asked a series of questions, “What is it? Is it like a dance, a puppet, a transformation, quick changing.” She called it “ridiculous, adding, “I don’t know what it is, but I really really think you deserve this.” She then hit her Golden Buzzer. It’s a bit of a wasted golden buzzer, but there’s always the one joke act.
The one act that truly impressed me was 13-year-old singer Mia Soleil Sanchez who brought the house down with a cover of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever.” I also find intrigue in the unique tap dancing and drummer duo, Jabu and Cornelio. Final auditions end with the July 23 episode, and it appears Golden Buzzers are done with, but who knows maybe there will be one more.
