Anybody here watching the Simon Cowell-produced America’s Got Talent? I covered it a few year’s ago, but hated what seemed like endless weeks of horrible auditions and blatantly hokey sob-stories to get to a few talented acts. So, I kinda sorta watch it now, with an eye for bringing some of the interesting talent to the blog, and leaving the rest.
Last night, the mother of Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe impressed the judges with her rendition of Etta James’ “At Last” to advance to the semi-final round.
Gabby’s mom, Alice Tan Ridley, has spent the last 20 years singing underground, “I’ve been singing since I was young and now I’m singing underground in the subway stations, ” she explained, before taking the stage. “I love singing in the subway and to see the smiles on people’s faces. This is what I’ve been pursuing all my life. Maybe this is it, from the subway to the big stage!”
She’s got a powerful alto voice that’s kind of interesting. Watch her audition after the jump.
