The auditions were MUCH better tonight. Am I right? There were a bunch that I liked. Read my thoughts on each contestant in my American Idol 14 premiere pt 2 recap.
My favorite of the night was Savion Wright. It’s so good to see him back, seemingly happy and with a positive attitude! Hopefuls could take a few notes on how to approach the American Idol process. Take notes, work hard, continue to improve, music heals. Savion has it going on.
I am also really happy for Sarina-Joi Crowe. The fourth time appears to be the charm for her. She’s got an amazing instrument that can do otherworldly things. I get the impression that she still hasn’t reached her potential. She could definitely be one to watch this season.
Trevor Douglas has that whole adorable geek vibe going on that will appeal to young and old alike. Plus, he’s straight up a good musician. I predict he’ll go far.
Lovey James has charisma and a bubbly personality. She also has a 70k+ YouTube following and the potential to be a pop star. But she’s not a great singer. Unfortunately cute girl + pop sensibility + decent but not awesome vocals = early exit. What works out in the real world doesn’t necessarily work on Idol.
Cody Fry made an impression. He wasn’t the best singer of the night, but I would rate him most unusual. He seems to be a very creative musician. I wonder what else he has up his sleeve.
I’m looking at the list of singers who advanced tonight, and there are 21 names on it. I don’t understand why last night’s premiere was so light on actual auditions. There were only 8, and that includes the rejects.
As far as the judges are concerned–I’m glad that Keith, Jlo and Harry have returned. I enjoy their obvious chemistry. But do they really need to be yapping when a hopeful is standing in front of them waiting to sing? It’s disrespectful to the auditioner, and it’s got to be REALLY REALLY nerve wracking. I suppose you can view it as a way for a singer to develop patience and nerves of steel. But still. It’s also kind of annoying for the viewer.
