Tonight’s American Idol was the very last taped episode EVER. I’m not sorry that particular last is behind us. Spoilers are fun, but there’s something to be said for the nail-biting excitement of a live show, waiting for the results of a nationwide vote.
I’m also pretty tired of these lickety-split 1 hour episodes that have so many performances jammed into them, I can barely remember them afterward. (By the way…tonight is the last Wednesday telecast until the finale).
The initial press release from FOX called tonight’s episode “Wildcard Night – Judges Choice” and indeed, they were originally to send EIGHT contestants to the Top 10 while voters were to put a measly two choices through. Imagine our surprise when it turned out the judges would only be putting through FOUR singers. The remaining 10 of the Top 4 would perform, and WE THE PEOPLE would choose six of the Top 10! It’s still only a little over half the numbers, but it appears, for once, TPTB heard our bitter cries and responded.
The four singers the judges put through on a “fastpass” were no brainers. All have performed at a high level during the competition and/or have established strong fan bases. I’m not mad. They all would have been voted in anyway. Jlo was pretty annoying, however, shilling for the underbaked Gianna Isabella. If any R&B singer goes through, it better be my girl Avalon Young. Although, Jlo did give her a nod.
The contestants reprising prior song selections translated to a pretty predictable set of performances. Every singer acquitted themselves fairly well with material they felt comfortable singing. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s bring on the challenges.
NOW. It’s time to vote for your favorites. Also, choose who you think is mostly likely to go home tomorrow. Four singers will be sent back from where they came. I’ll put up a prediction post in the am.
