American Idol 2019 Spoilers: Top 20 Solo and Celebrity Song Choices

For the very first time, American Idol aired a 3 hour episode, and it was better than I expected. The upside–the extra hour enabled Idol to showcase more singers. And that’s ALWAYS a good thing! Although, they were still unable to at least namecheck all 40 singers. Still, only 3 of the Top 20 were montaged, with the remaining 17 given full segments. I feel like I mostly know the remaining 20 contestants, and that’s a very good thing.

Things on American Idol that never change: The judges coming up with lame ways to “fake out” contestants when delivering good news. So much face palming people! Green mile tension. Even in the warm, beautiful Hawaiian setting couldn’t blunt the anticipation. The heartbreak and joy when the contestants learn their fate. I really do love the green mile. Putting contestants in front of a club-like audience is make or break. Can a singer entertain a crowd? If not, maybe it’s time to cut them loose.

I don’t really have complaints about the judges’ decisions. There were a few contestants I wish we could have seen more of–Emma Kleinberg and Assata Renay are two that come to mind.  I wouldn’t have been mad if the judges gave Tyler Mitchell a spot. But I can’t think of singer I’d switch out for him. Wade Cota, maybe…

My favorite performances of the night: Ashley Hess, Alejandro Aranda and Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon. I also really enjoyed Laine Hardy, Kate Barnett, Laci Kaye Booth and Walker Burrows
