American Idol 2020 Preview: Watch Jovin Webb Bring the BBQ Sauce
Jovin’s troubles began after he lost his beloved mother in 2012 to a sudden illness. She was his “backbone” and supported everything he did, whether it was sports or music. Jovin describes the day she died as the “Worst day of my life.” The singer numbed the pain with self-destructive activity.
But, Jovin finally got himself together after he became a father. “My son was my savior,” he says, “That’s when I realized that enough was enough. I had to tighten up my bootstraps and be a man.” Auditioning for Idol is one way Jovin believes he can set a good example for his boy. He wants to illustrate that “anything you want out of life, you can get it.”

After the full time musician performs a raw, slow, bluesy version of the 70’s southern rock classic at his audition, the judges give him an extended standing ovation. Jovin takes the song all the way back to its roots. It’s an effortless performance. He’s got some Gary Clark Jr. vibes going on right there.
“Instant identity!” Lionel declares. “You officially brought the BBQ sauce to American Idol,” adding, “That was moving.” Luke says, “I saw your whole life in that performance. It’s only something Louisiana could create.” Katy says, “I got chills in my cheekbones.” She adds, “All of your pain that you’ve been through, we believe you.”
All three judges stand up to shout, “You’re going to Hollywood!”
