American Idol drops the first preview audition of the season. Watch 17-year-old country singer Alex Miller perform for the judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan.
The young singer hails from a Lancaster, Kentucky where he works on his grandfather’s cattle farm. There is the obligatory shots of Alex riding a tractor and hanging out with the cows. Music served to help Alex get over his parents divorce.
He’s been singing on stages all through his childhood. Alex’s grandad is VERY PROUD OF HIM.

As Alex walks into the audition room, Luke is rocking out to a country song. The hopeful sings along with Luke. But when he performs, it’s not a cover! He sings a song, “I’m Over You,” that he wrote for an ex-girlfriend.
The original tune has a traditional sound. It’s almost TOO traditional for country radio. He has a decent twang going. “Yee Haw!” says Katy. Lionel causes his personality “infectious.” Luke will pull some strings to get him on the Grand Ole Opry.
Luke joins him on stage to sing Merle Haggard’s “Big City.” Luke declares, “I’m taking this boy home with me!”
After his performance, the judges lead Alex to a big room with a huge screen. I guess friends and family Zooming in to watch gold tickets being delivered to their loved ones will be a thing this season! Grandpa continues to be proud.
American Idol 2021 premieres on Sunday Feb 14 at 8 PM ET/PT on ABC.
