American Idol 2022: Live Showcase Type Round is Back with a Studio Audience for Season 20! Sign Up!
All the signs point to American Idol season 20 Hollywood Week auditions happening as we speak. Our own Blake Busch reports that hopefuls gathered at the Intercontinental Hotel over the weekend, with auditioners posting photos of themselves in front of The Orpheum Theater.
Now, OnCamera Audiences are seating a live studio audience for two tapings scheduled for Friday December 10. One taping is scheduled for the early afternoon, the other a few hours later.
Perhaps Hollywood Week is over, and the show is moving on to a version of a live Showcase Round. That’s when the final round of singers perform in a live club setting in front of a studio audience, and judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest. For seasons 17 and 18, the entire crew travelled to Hawaii to film the round.
But because of Covid concerns last year, producers limited season 19 studio audience members. At the end of Hollywood Week, last season, which took place December 7- 10 2020, approximately 64 singers auditioned in front of the judges only, for a spot in the Top 24.
But as COVID vaccines and more sophisticated protocols have become readily available, it appears that some form of the Live Showcase has returned.
However, it’s important to note that I’m speculating here, as very little information has come out of the latest round of auditions. The show could be shaking up the format.
In the meantime, more information should become available once the tapings are finished. A studio audience means at least a partial contestant list will leak shortly! Usually, a Top 20/24 emerges from the Showcase.

The usual COVID rules apply. Potential audience members must be “fully vaccinated fans ages 12 and up.” All audience members under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
