The show opens with judge Luke Bryan covering John Mellencamp’s iconic 80’s hit “Small Town.” All the songs tonight will be by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. ROLL THE TAPE. Luke Bryan WIPED OUT on stage in Vancouver last night . “See contestants, it doesn’t have to be perfect,” quips Ryan.
Gene is off to the side sitting in a silver throne. The KISS member can be a real jerk sometimes, but tonight’s he’s kind and generous with the kids, and cheerleads them all the way.
Triston Harper – Heartbreak Hotel by Elvis Presley
Triston is a BIG Elvis fan. Also, he decides not to play guitar this week. “I’m going to break out a bit of my moves,” he promises. Gene calls him “fantastic.” Oh Lordy. He’s busting out the Elvis hip swivels. He’s got a bit of MJ in there too. Kudos to him for showing a different side and moving around the stage rather than being rooted to a mic stand. However, the routine is pretty dorky. But actually endearing.
“The people are already in love with you,” says Katy. “You scared me and you scared your mother.” Luke calls it “tremendous” and “perfectly done.” Lionel calls him excellent.
Julia Gagnon – Run to You by Whitney Houston
Gene calls Julia “a star.” He adds, “You only get the respect you demand. Julia shares how as a kid, she dreamed of being glamorous and loved, and then she met her fiance, who loves her unconditionally. Julia looks really pretty in a red gown. But this song choice. EHHHHHHHHH. The presentation is pagenty. But good for her she doesn’t oversing or get shouty. Mostly. A couple of the runs were pretty nice, especially when she floated into her head voice.
Luke says, “Your transformation and growth is just so inspiring to watch. It’s why this show has been on the air for so long. That was amazing.” Lionel says, “You commanded that stage tonight. Absolutely beautiful.” Katy said, “Confidence is a mental decision, and you decided to switch it on.” Ryan brings up her fiance Nate on Facetime in Maine. They exchange I love yous. Aw.
She gets more than a memoriam card. Ryan honors season 5 alum Mandisa, who died last week at the age of 47. So sad. “We’re going to celebrate her next week with a special musical tribute.” Nice. During the FOX years, producers refused to even ACKNOWLEDGE alums who passed away.
Roman Collins – You’re All I Need to Get By by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell
The judges saved Roman last week. Gene says the song doesn’t start with the first note or end with the last. He tells a story about living with Diana Ross when producers sent over the demo for “Endless Love” and he urged her to do it. When Roman sings these old songs I don’t get mad. He makes them his own and somehow they sound timeless like the originals. He’s riffing and working the stage. He asks the audience to clap along. He’s a natural and full of joy. I love this guy.
Lionel says, “You were on fire. You made that song your song. Y’all vote.” Katy says “Everything you do is authentically you. You are my favorite person to watch and hear.” Luke says, “Your talent level is as good as anything I’ve seen in this chair. You bring it every time.”
Kaibrienne – I Hate Myself for Loving You by Joan Jett
Gene helps her find the physicality in the words. “Put that face in there.” She admits that she’s mostly performed ballads so far and rocking out is something new. At first, I wasn’t sure about this song choice. But her raspy sound is perfect for singing rock music. She could move around the stage more. But her vocals are A+. She could sing rock for the rest of the competition and be credible.
Katy says, “You’re a rock star!” Luke says, “That was a concert. You morphed into a whole different human being.” Lionel says, “Gene taught you something that is absolutely imperative. That ugly face is exactly what was needed in that song.”
Now, Ryan and Lionel will reveal the official 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees: A Tribe Called Quest, Cher, Foreigner, Dave Matthews Band, Kool and the Gang, Mary J. Blige, Peter Frampton and Ozzy Osbourne. And there’s more. Jimmy Buffett will receive recognition for musical excellence, along with Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, MC5, John Mayall, Alexis Korner, and Big Mama Thornton. Music executive Suzanne de Passe will receive the Ahmet Ertegun award.
Jayna Elise – I Have Nothing by Whitney Houston
She also considered a Foo Fighter song, which would have been a step outside of the box. But instead, she’s singing another Whitney song. Hm…. I get that she wants to show off her vocals, but she’s not showing much creativity or nerve with these song choices. Compare that to Kaibrienne who has picked songs from all over the spectrum, and is now a front runner. This performance is nice done, but she doesn’t bring anything new to it.
Luke says, “Way to show up. Your whole presentation was perfect.” Lionel says, “You look like a star, you act like a star, you are a star.” Katy says, “You have Big Star Energy.” She thinks Jayna picked the right song.
Mia Matthews – Those Memories of You by Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton and EmmyLou Harris
Gene advises her to put more emotion in her face when she sings. “I thought she delivered,” he said. Mia could absolutely channel 70s era Linda, back in her country rock days. This is a perfect song choice for her. She’s taken Gene’s advice to show more expression in her face. She ends the song with a beautiful vocal flourish.
Lionel says, “Everybody is coming out shining like a new penny.” Katy says, “You bumped up your performance real good.” Luke says, “Iron sharpens iron. You guys are showing up.” Mia reveals that she’s wearing NO hair extensions tonight. That, after Katy asked.
Kayko – High and Dry by Radiohead
It’s Kayko’s first cover song on Idol. So far, he’s sung all self-penned songs. And HOO BOY HE PICKED A GOOD ONE DON’T WRECK IT! Narrator: He does not wreck it. I love Kayko’s originals, now he’s proven that his taste in covers is perfect. He starts off softly. Almost too soft, before busting out on the chorus. He’s a little pitchy, but so emotional, it doesn’t matter. HE’S STILL MY FAVORITE.
Katy says, “You did it such justice. I believe in you.” Luke says, “You really dug in to showing the world your artistry.” Lionel says, “You are so versatile. What else can you do? It’s fabulous.”
Emmy Russell – I Can’t Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt
Gene uses a jump scare to help her nerves. She says it worked! She got lots of mean comments such as how she should leave singing and songwriting to her grandma (the late Loretta Lynn). Mean. She’s a better songwriter than she is a singer. She’s still nervous, and pitchy in spots. But she fearlessly brings the emotion, which is most of the battle. Kaibrienne is offstage in tears.
Luke says, “The realness of your voice is so listeable. It’s very special.” Lionel says, “That was great.” Katy says, “You’re not competing against any of those people. You’re competing against yourself. Tonight you won.”
Jordan Anthony – I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston
Gene helps Jordan with his confidence and stage presence. TOO MUCH WHITNEY TONIGHT. I mean, SO MANY ARTISTS to choose from when it comes to the HOF. He’s performing a slower version of the upbeat hit. He’s doing a different take on the song, at least. He hits some sour notes in his upper register, though.
Lionel says, “Until you grabbed that microphone, you let go. Enjoy this moment.” Katy compliments the jazz chord he ended on. She calls it his best so far. “You’ve grown so much.” Luke thinks he “nailed it from top to finish.”
McKenna Faith Breinholt – It’s Hard to Say I’m Sorry by Chicago
McKenna was ill and missed the mentor session with Gene. So the show goes right into her performance. I’m not a fan of big 80s power ballads. And I’m not loving this song choice for Mckenna. For this song to work, it needs a big strong voice. The band is overpowering her. Her raspy vocal tone is so cool, but not on this song. It doesn’t help that she sounds like she’s still sick.
Gene compliments her. “I’ve got nothing to say to you. You felt the entire thing. That’s what a star is.” Katy says, “We’re all human. But it’s OK.” Lionel says, “That’s called a sexy sounding performance.”
Jack Blocker – Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright by Bob Dylan
BIG UPS to Jack for not singing “To Make You Feel My Love. ” Gene says he wrote a few songs with Dylan. OK then. He helps Jack with keeping his phrasing subtle. Great song choice for Jack. It’s bold and perfect for his Americana vocal style. I appreciate the singers who know who they are and don’t flail around. When Katy told him to stop making faces, he said. “Naw, it’s what I do.” He’s confident. That was one of his best performances to date.
Luke says, “You’re staying true to what you are and growing like crazy.” Lionel says, “You made a Bob Dylan song your song.” Katy says, “You have just grown into your authentic self. You’re just so cool. I was wrong. You’re the coolest.”
Nya – Say A Little Prayer by Aretha Franklin
Nya had to be saved by the judges last week. Gene says do what she did in rehearsal but even bigger. She starts the song with the chorus, before launching into the first verse. Her phrasing is so cool and jazzy. She’s got a better performance spot. Hopefully she’s done enough to stay in it.
Lionel says, “You are a star. VOTE VOTE VOTE. This lady is amazing.” Katy says it’s the best she’s ever done. “You did it so well. My favorite I’ve ever heard you do.” Luke says, “It was so effortless and so smooth.” The judges comments getting short. Running out of time!
Will Moseley – Night Moves by Bob Seger
Gene dropping more names. Of course he knows Bob Seger. The song choice fits Will’s soulful country style. He always delivers. But he’s on the verge of becoming predictable. I’m still waiting for him to bust out with something intense and surprising. A singer can coast for only so long.
Katy says, “Way to go big mo.” She thinks he showed his sensitive side. Hm. “I love you,” she says. Luke says, “You’re picking songs that are true to you. You know who you are as an artist.” Lionel says, “You picked the perfect song. Enjoy this, because you killed that.”
Abi Carter – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John
Her religious family didn’t allow her to listen to rock, the “devils music.” Oh boy. Gene said, “Don’t be afraid to give into the emotion,” She’s relieved he encouraged her to be herself. Abi sits at a grand piano. The original is also a ballad. But Abi performs without much instrumentation backing her. The arrangement allows her phrasing and beautiful tone to shine through. This song is REALLY HARD TO sing. The talent show path is littered with failures. But she’s killing it this week. Her streaming numbers should recover from last Monday’s low.
Luke says, “You just held the whole room. That is pro. Far beyond your age.” Lionel says, “If you want anyone to win you have to vote. It’s a great class.” Katy says, “From day one, it’s always been you. Tonight, it’s always been you. You sing with such an angelic frequency.”
Dang, I barely got in the last votes. Performing last is NOT very pimpy when the vote closes only minutes after the final performance.
RESULTS
TOM DIM THE LIGHTS. Over 19.9 million votes tonight. In no particular order: Roman Collings, next it’s Mia Matthews, then Triston Harper, Ryan calls Julia Gagnon. Next safe tonight is Jack Blocker. Jayna Elise is safe. Also in the Top 12 is McKenna Reinholt. The next spot goes to Kaibrienne. Joining the others is Emmy Russell, After the vote next is Abi Carter. Also voted into the Top 12 is Will Moseley. The final person into the Top 12 is…Kayko. Jordan Anthony and Nya are eliminated.
Disappointed that Nya is leaving. She has something special. Jordan wasn’t at his best tonight. But considering both eliminated singers had to be saved by the judges last week, it’s not surprising that they didn’t last another week.
Tomorrow night, the Top 12 perform for your votes, Ryan reveals a Top 10 at the end of the night. Meghan Trainor mentors the contestants as they take on Billboard No. 1 hits. And Season 7 alum David Archuleta will perform! Yay! Also, the show will present a special musical tribute to Season 5 alum, Mandisa, who passed away last week.
