Who are your favorite contestants? How would you GRADE Carrie Underwood as a judge?

The downside of the American Idol format is that it takes awhile to get acquainted with the contestants’ talents. In the beginning, fans learn more about their backstories and dramas than they do about their singing ability. I wish producers would scale back the tears and the crying, actually.
It took the Showstopper and Head-to-Head rounds–once the singers performed on stage with the band–to get a feel for the season’s talent. So far, I am optimistic that the Top 24 rounds will be entertaining, indeed.
I’ll have more to say about specific singers in the coming days. But so far, front runners include Breanna Nix, Drew Ryn, Mattie Pruitt, and Canaan James Hill. Will Baylee Littrell’s status as the son of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell bring him a ready made fan base? Maybe.
Amanda Barise, Kolbi Jordan, Filo and Thunderstorm Artis possess Top 14 potential. But it’s still early in the competition, and any number of artists can pull out as a dark horse.
Carrie Underwood YAY or NAY? (Cautious yay)
As a judge, Carrie Underwood is quite a departure from her predecessor, Katy Perry. Katy was a comedian and would do just about anything for a laugh. Carrie is reserved. Fellow judges Lionel Richie, Luke Bryan and host Ryan Seacrest are pitching in to help a newbie out. It helps her that much of the season 23 panel narrative revolves around the 20th anniversary of her taking the crown.
It’s hard to assess a new judge until the live shows begin and they are forced to think on their feet without the help of editing. A plus in Carrie’s favor is that she loves music and is a fan of genres outside of country music. While Luke or The Voice’s Blake Shelton might not know a hit pop song, Carrie will not only know it, but will be able to recite its lyrics.
Carrie’s empathy and understanding of the contestants as a former competitor is also a plus. But the downside is TOO MUCH COUNTRY. It’s too bad the show couldn’t afford to bring on a pop star like Miley Cyrus for the buzz and ability to drive memes and attention.
Soooo…it’s TIME to VOTE FOR YOUR FAVORITES!
