On last week’s American Idol Top 7 live show, host Ryan Seacrest announced that auditions for next season were open. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that Disney has officially announced the renewal of American Idol for the 2024-2025 season. Dancing with the Stars has also been renewed.
Other Disney/ABC shows renewals announced on Friday (May 10) include The Bachelor and Shark Tank.
While network ratings have gone down for American Idol and Dancing with the Stars year to year, it tracks with ratings losses for broadcast networks overall. American Idol this season is outperforming The Voice on NBC and still, compared to the rest of ABC’s lineup, pulls in solid ratings. It will be Season 8 for Idol on ABC and 23 overall including the FOX years. Dancing with the Stars is heading into its 33 season.
American Idol is currently in the midst of its 22nd season. Current winner Iam Tongi will pass the crown to a new champ on Sunday May 19. On Sunday May 12, the penultimate episode, the Top 5 will sing songs from the Disney catalog. Kane Brown mentors in Walt Disney World, Florida. A Top 3 will be revealed by the end of the episode.
Katy Perry is leaving the judges panel after 7 seasons

Earlier this year, judge Katy Perry announced that she would be leaving American Idol after seven years on the panel. Now, producers have to find a high-caliber artist to take her place. Expect the summer to be filled with rumors about who might take her place. Names like Meghan Trainor and Jelly Roll have been tossed about. But if Lionel RIchie and Luke Bryan stick around, the replacement will be a high profile female artist, so speculate away!
DWTS, which is hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro and co-host Julianne Hough, will once again simulcast on Disney+. The show’s thirty-second season, which ended in December, was won by Xochitl Gomez and Val Chmerkovskiy. Last season, Derek Hough, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba sat on the judges panel. It appears the idea of keeping Dancing with the Stars on streaming only has been reversed. At least for now.
