Normandy, an American Idol 2022 contestant who got 3 yeses from judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan was uninvited from going to Hollywood Week.
The singer surprised the panel when her singing voice turned out to be very different from her squeaky, childlike speaking voice. She walked away from her audition with a golden ticket. But it turns out the producers eventually said NEVER MIND.
Normandy explained in a Tik Tok video what happened.
“Hi everyone, I am the girl from American Idol who had the carrot purse and bunny shoes and I call my fans kitten nuggets. So I keep getting a lot of comments about, ‘Why did you quit American Idol? Why aren’t you on the show? What’s going on?’”
“So I’m going to do a brief answer of that. This isn’t me bashing American Idol or anything like that. I’m just going to educate you guys on how these shows work,” the singer said.
“We filmed the auditions back in October and Hollywood Week was back in December. So late November, I got a call from Fremantle, which is the production company, and they told me I would not be going to Hollywood Week. And this is very, very common because they get hundreds of people that they give yesses to and so not everyone can go to Hollywood Week. It’s too many people,” Normandy said.
“There are people that got farther than me in the show and their auditions didn’t even air,” she said. “So, just to let you know a little bit about that. And yep, that’s what happened.”
Unfortunately for Normandy, she is now 29 and has aged out of the show.
Producers uninvite contestants from Hollywood for a variety of reasons
As Normandy explained in the video, it’s not unusual for production to whittle down the list of contestants the judges put through to Hollywood. In the past, producers would rescind the invite after a background check turned up something negative. As far as why American Idol aired the audition anyway? They probably came to the conclusion that it would make good TV. Meanwhile there are no official videos or photos of Normandy posted to official American Idol channels.
