American Idol 2022 alum Allegra Miles released “Girl,” a romantic queer anthem that she recently penned.
Back in January, the singer, who also competed on The Voice 18, teased the song for her fans on Instagram: “I wrote this song about a girl I have a phat crush on.” She captioned it, “Do y’all want this one?” with the hashtags “#girlswholikegirls #lgbt #lgbtq.
The lyrics, which describe a sweet crush goes “You could be my girl, You could rule my world, We could be a supersonic wave thru the sky, You could be my girl, You could be my pearl, don’t you know it kills me when you look in my eyes.”
She began performing the song live, including at The Hotel Cafe for The Queer Cafe. Finally, after teasing the song for weeks, Allegra announced on Instagram, “You guys have been asking for Girl…and I literally couldn’t wait any longer, so it’s dropping on March 3.
On the day the song came out, Allegra dropped the album art and declared, “GAY ANTHEM OF THE YEAR.”
Allegra is not signed to 19 Recordings as fans speculated
It’s worth noting that after American Idol season 20 ended last spring, crowning Noah Thompson the winner, Allegra appeared in a few 19 Recordings label showcases. Fans began wondering if she signed with American Idol’s record label. This, despite leaving the competition before the Top 10. But it turns out that Allegra released “Girl” independently. Considering that Allegra displayed songwriting talent earlier in the competition, signing her would have made sense, despite her early elimination.

The singer-songwriter survived Hollywood Week and the Showstopper Round where she sang an original song, “Reality.” At the Top 24, she performed Harry Styles’ “Adore You” and advanced to the Top 20. But after performing Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’,” it took another original, her audition song “Tainted” to earn one of four judges wildcards to the Top 14. After a lovely performance of Billie Eilish’s “Ocean Eyes,” Allegra left the competition.
Allegra plays her first big festival, thanks fans and staff
On the weekend “Girl” came out, Allegra played the Okeechobee Fest. A few days later, she posted a social media thank you to all the people who have helped her career along. “when i was a little girl i always said “I want to sing on a big stage one day and make people happy my dream came true on Friday at @okeechobeefest. we got to open for @freenationals @goosetheband @odesza @lilyachty” She also spoke about experiencing “dark traumatic things” in her past, and how music has helped her get through difficult times.
The singer, who is comfortable to proudly share her queer identity with fans, writes, “…music has been the one constant. It has brought me back into my body countless times, and reminds me that at least eventually everything will be ok. it allows me to articulate emotions and experiences that I don’t know how to put into words. Music has saved me time and time again.”
