Nick Fradiani set to perform at one of my favorite concert spaces in Massachusetts? Sign me up! The American Idol season 14 winner performed at the Natick Center for the Performing arts on March 31. A former firehouse, the space is cozy, comfortable and has excellent acoustics. I saw wonderful concert performances from Kris Allen (S8 winner) and Crystal Bowersox (S9 runner-up) at Natick Arts. Not even a crummy Nor’aster driving ice pellets at my car windshield could hold me back.
As far as the concert was concerned, Nick put on an enjoyable acoustic set, including covers, original songs from his post-Idol album Hurricane and a couple of tunes from his old band, Beach Avenue.
A couple of notes: Nick performed a “reggae version” of “Howl at the Moon.” Mid-set, the band left the stage and the singer performed a solo rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark.” Nice! “If I Didn’t Know You” followed, and then Nick Sr. came back on stage to perform “Hallelujah.” Nick mentioned that the duet he uploaded to Facebook over the holidays went wildly viral. He joked fondly about his dad’s popularity. It’s obvious father and son are close.
At the end of the set, Nick pulled an Adele (Or a Brooke White, to keep the reference Idol related!) and restarted “Love is Blind.” A few weeks before, Nick played a gig in New York City. He had some funny stories about that. Apparently, he had a few drinks before the show, which emboldened him to shout the Billy Joel’s “The Downeaster Alexa” was about “f*cking fishing!” Heh.
If you’re a fan of Hurricane, you’ll love these songs performed in an acoustic setting. And if you haven’t heard the album, the intimate setting do the songs justice, so take a listen. Check out every performance from Nick’s concert below.
Edited to Add: As noted in comments, Nick also performed a new song titled “We Live Forever” written with his bandmate Nick.
